Syracuse University reappoints Michael A. Speaks for a second term as Dean of the School of Architecture

The Syracuse University School of Architecture has announced the reappointment of Dean Michael A. Speaks to another five-year term.

Speaks, at the helm since 2013, has been instrumental in establishing numerous academic and faculty-focused programs, including the Harry der Boghosian Endowed Fellowship Program for emerging academics in architecture.

The former Dean of the University of Kentucky College of Design also worked to establish the school’s China Studies program, which now has studios in Beijing and Shanghai, along with a host of academic exchanges and scholarship programs in South Korea and Taiwan respectively.

“With Michael’s deanship has come a new era of success for the School of Architecture,” Syracuse Provost Gretchen Ritter said of his tenure thus far. “He has extended the school’s reach and enhanced its already strong academic program. I know the school will continue to flourish with him at the helm, and I look forward to our continued work together.”

Professor Kermit Lee Jr., Syracuse School of Architecture's first black graduate, honored in student organized exhibition

Kermit Lee Jr., died in 2018 and was the first Black graduate of Syracuse University’s School of Architecture. In dedication, Syracuse’s National Organization of Minority Architecture Students chapter created an exhibit honoring his legacy and named it “The Living Room Conversation: In Memory of Professor Kermit J. Lee Jr.”

Curated by architecture students Benson Joseph and Parinda Pin Sangkaeo, The Living Room Conversation features Professor Lee's drawings from his time as a student and further chronicles his life and legacy. According to The Daily Orange, the exhibition was split into four parts, each a different season in Lee's life: student, teacher, architect, and person.

"Students really captured him and understood a man I don’t think any of them have met," said Karin Lee George, Professor Lee's daughter. "He’d be grinning."

Marble ~ ish: Harry der Boghosian Fellowship 2017 installation

Marble~ish was developed as part of the research from the 2016/17 Harry der Boghosian Fellowship at Syracuse School of Architecture. Conducted by Maya Alam in collaboration with her students “~ISH: Stages Before the Real” is an installation exploring questions concerning the in-between: site specificity/site-less, object/landscape, analog/digital, distinctive/similar and flat/flat-less.

The exhibition represents the culmination of a yearlong design research effort conducted at the School of Architecture. The investigation as a whole deals with 'speculations on social dreaming and experimental preservation in consideration of new media and its effects on our perception'.

The new curriculum DESIGN | ENERGY | FUTURES is a concentrated research program focused on energy and the built environment, with opportunities for research and the creation of design projects ranging across a variety of scales—from urban design to high performance buildings, from landscape urbanism to building material research and product design.
