UW-Milwaukee SARUP appoints Krisann Rehbein as director of Community Design Solutions

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s newly-formed College of the Arts and Architecture has announced its appointment of Chicago-based artist and nonprofit leader Krisann Rehbein as the new director of Community Design Solutions (CDS).

The position, which is organized within the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP), will engage with local community organizations to ensure the continued delivery of pro bono planning services such as the Turnkey Housing initiative and Green Schoolyards project that have, in addition to nearly 230 others, helped to garner praise for the institution over the past decade.

In October 2022, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee released details of its strategic 2030 Action Plan. This initiative outlined plans for several UWM schools and colleges to be realigned. During this process, the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP), which originally operated as an individual school, has since been combined with the Peck School of the Arts to create the newly formed College of the Arts and Architecture. Through this reorganization, the school has announced Mo Zell as the College's new Interim Dean.

In July 2022, Archinect reported on Zell's appointment as SARUP's Interim Dean after she held the position as the school's first woman to be a Department Chair back in 2018. Today, our Get Lectured series continues with a list of events and lectures happening at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Architecture & Urban Planning this spring.

The semester starts on February 22 with a visit from Dapham Maraoane of The Architecture Lobby hosted by Architectural Activism Fellow Sam Schuermann. The next week includes a look at downtown placemaking (including the vaunted Deer District by Gensler) on February 28.

Bernheimer Architecture’s Christopher Beck comes to campus on March 8 to speak at another event hosted by Schuermann. Princeton University Assistant Professor Erin Besler follows on March 10 to discuss her recent award-winning work as co-founder of Besler & Sons. Finally, the month concludes with the HGA Firm Leadership Panel hosted again by Schuermann on March 22.

Heatherwick collaborates with Harley-Davidson for design of Milwaukee community park

Heatherwick Studio and Harley-Davidson have unveiled details of their plan to transform part of the motorcycle manufacturer’s headquarters in Milwaukee into a public park. According to the design team, the largely concrete site will be converted into a “civic and soulful green gathering space that can be used by everyone, including employees and the local community.”

The scheme will be anchored by a 272-foot-wide sunken events space named ‘The Hub.’ Formed of tiered seating and landscaped with trees and plants, the circular multi-use space will be constructed of ten types of locally sourced brick, weathered steel, and timber.

In one direction, The Hub will provide views of the original brick Harley-Davidson manufacturing buildings, while in the other, the space will provide views of a park filled with 120 native plant species and a planned market street, contemplative garden, and nature playground.

Milwaukee's Ascent tower developer on its instant impact and the future of mass timber

“We keep amassing this incredible pool of knowledge. It would be crazy to do all of that research and development and not scale it.”

New Land Enterprises (the developers behind Korb + Associates' record-setting Ascent tower design) managing director Tim Gokhman sat down recently to discuss the bellwether project with the Urban Land Institute (ULI). He told Milwaukee native Alby Gallun that the selection of the materials was driven perhaps unsurprisingly by aesthetics and marketing considerations, but that its ability to reduce on-site labor costs and the speed of the construction timeline were also deciding factors along with its proven sustainability and performance metrics.

Gokham said he thinks the burgeoning material can eventually be used up to a height of "30 to 40 stories" and stated that its biggest obstacle (at least for now) is insurance rates driven by the misconstrued risk of fire and water damage. “It is temporary,” he said finally, inferencing the need for further research into its structural capabilities. “The only reason I think why the insurance rates are high is because there aren’t enough data ...

Today is Santiago Calatrava Day in Milwaukee, honoring the architect’s iconic Quadracci Pavilion

Milwaukee has declared Friday, September 16th as Santiago Calatrava Day, in celebration of the architect’s contribution to the city. Calatrava’s legacy in the city comes in the form of the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Quadracci Pavilion, known locally as “The Calatrava.”

The pavilion opened in 2001 following four years of construction. Designed in collaboration with local architect David Kahler Slater, the project was Calatrava’s first building in the United States. Three years after the pavilion’s completion, Calatrava would unveil his design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in Lower Manhattan.

Milwaukee to renovate 150 of its vacant homes in an effort to create affordable housing and jobs

Milwaukee’s $15 million proposal to renovate 150 vacant, city-owned homes is moving forward. On Monday, the Department of City Development (DCD) announced the development teams, a mix of nonprofit and for-profit developers, that will participate in the first round of the Homes MKE initiative. The participants were selected from a request-for-proposals (RFP) process that generated a tremendous response.

A total of 66 proposals were submitted, an unprecedented number according to the DCD, with 15 developers selected. Milwaukee will sell the houses for as little as $1 and provide an estimated $75,000 development subsidy and grant a $5,000 workforce subsidy. Following the renovations, the properties can be sold to owner-occupants, rented out, or placed into a rent-to-own program.

The MKE initiative is funded by $394.2 million in federal money from the American Rescue Plan Act, which was created to offer pandemic aid. As reported by Urban Milwaukee, the properties cannot be flipped to another investor-owner. Unless sold to an owner-occupant, the homes must be developer-owned for at least five years. In addition, developers are required to provide work to unemployed or underemployed city residents. 50% of employees must also reside in a collection of specific zip codes, and they must be paid a living wage of at least $12.21 per hour.

CTBUH certifies Ascent as the world's tallest mass timber hybrid building

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has officially declared the recently-opened Ascent tower by Korb + Associates Architects the world’s tallest timber-concrete hybrid building.

The 25-story, 86.6-meter (284-foot) structure in Milwaukee takes the distinguished title in two of the mass timber categories: It is both the tallest timber building overall and the tallest concrete-timber hybrid building. The previous world’s tallest timber building was Mjøstårnet in Brumunddal, Norway, certified by CTBUH in 2019, which stood at roughly 280 feet. Previously holding the record of tallest concrete-timber hybrid building was the approximately 276-foot HoHo building in Vienna, Austria.

Ennead and Kahler Slater unveil new Milwaukee Public Museum design

Ennead Architects and Kahler Slater, together with the Milwaukee Public Museum, have unveiled the design for a new five-story, 200,000-square-foot museum building atop a 2.4-acre site in Milwaukee’s Haymarket neighborhood. It is on track to be the largest cultural project to date in the city.

According to the project team, four core principles influenced the museum’s design: community, nature, education, and the preservation of the museum’s vast collections. It aims to reflect Wisconsin's rich natural history, drawing inspiration from the geological formations within Mill Bluff State Park, while establishing a new community space and educational destination. The museum will also be a hub for research.

World's tallest mass timber tower opens in Milwaukee

A historic milestone in the use of mass timber as a construction material is about to be passed as Korb + Associates Architects’ aptly-named Ascent tower is finally set to open tomorrow, July 15, in Milwaukee.

Standing 25 stories and a total of 86.6 meters (284 feet), the tower is now officially the world record holder for the largest mass timber structure in the world, surpassing Norway’s Mjøsa Tower by a scant 1.2 meters (or roughly 4 feet). It cost $80 million to construct and will provide Milwaukee’s East Town neighborhood with a total of 259 apartment units built in partnership with structural engineers Thornton Tomasetti.

Ascent is now Milwaukee’s second mass timber residential development after the nearby Timber Lofts and will soon be joined by a 15-story design called The Edison, which is set to open next year.

Mo Zell appointed UW-Milwaukee's School of Architecture & Planning Interim Dean

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's School of Architecture and Planning (SARUP) has announced Mo Zell as its Interim Dean.

Zell has been an impactful fixture at SARUP, starting her career at the school as an assistant professor in 2008. Since then, she has taught several foundational design studios, acted as Associate Dean from 2012–18, and in 2018 was SARUP's first woman to be a Department Chair.

Before working at SARUP, Zell taught at Yale University, South Carolina School of Arts and Humanities, Clemson University, North Carolina State University, and Northeastern University. Her extensive background as an educator and academic leader is paired with her experience as a licensed architect. In addition, she runs the award-winning design and research practice bauenstudio with her partner Marc Roehrle.

Gensler-designed 'Deer District' a model for NBA cities

Last night, the Milwaukee Bucks secured their first NBA title in 50 years with a Game 6 win over the Phoenix Suns. Known for their lively fan atmosphere, the Bucks’ triumph was shared by 65,000 supporters who were present just outside of the Fiserv Forum in a dedicated fan section known as the Deer District. As the Bucks progressed through the playoffs, the reputation of the Gensler-designed entertainment area has grown and is now being used as a model for NBA cities across the country.

Gensler designed the Deer District, in collaboration with Milwaukee-based firm RINKA, to become the city’s new “living room”. Formerly occupied by a parking structure, vacant lots, and a street, the site was cleared to connect the surrounding communities to the new Fiserv Forum, which opened in tandem with the district in 2019.

Milwaukee to name Fire Department HQ after state's first African American architect

The Milwaukee Fire Department Headquarters, at 711 W. Wells Street, is being renamed to honor the first African American architect in the state who designed it. Alonzo Robinson was the city and state’s first licensed African American architect. He designed the Milwaukee Fire Department Headquarters in 1960. It was finished a year later, one of the first of hundreds of buildings Robinson designed in the Milwaukee Area.

According to WTMJ Milwaukee, "The family says Alonzo didn’t want to be recognized for being the first African American architect but rather, he wanted his work to be noteworthy. In addition to the MFD HQ, he designed churches, like the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church near 17th and Meinecke, and he designed other city buildings as well."

Monica Obniski appointed curator of decorative arts and design at High Museum of Art in Atlanta

Monica Obniski, the current 20th and 21st Century Design curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum, has been selected to lead curatorial efforts for the decorative arts and design at the High Museum in Atlanta.

According to a High Museum press release, Obniski will oversee exhibitions and programs for the institution's 2,300-object collection, which dates from the 17th century to today. Obinski will also oversee the High’s Piazza activations event series, a "multiyear initiative that launched in 2014 to animate the Museum’s outdoor space with site-specific commissions that engage visitors of all ages in participatory art experiences," according to the announcement.

Telling Milwaukee's Story Through Architecture

UWM’s School of Architecture is marking its 50th anniversary in a yearlong celebration that concludes with a gala weekend in April. To commemorate five decades of education, research and community engagement, architecture faculty members picked the most important structures built in Milwaukee during each decade since the school was established in 1969.

Milwaukee’s most iconic structure might be the Quadracci Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum along Lake Michigan. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2001, the pavilion’s signature characteristic is the Burke Brise Soleil, a moveable, wing-like sunscreen that rests on top of the glass-enclosed Windhover Hall. Its wingspan is similar to a Boeing 747.

The pavilion’s futuristic design stands out in a downtown skyline dominated by more traditional architecture.

The Milwaukee Plan Commission and the Neighborhoods and Development Committee recently approved changes to New Land Enterprises' Ascent project, a wood tower that is due to be the tallest of its kind in North America, Construction Dive reports

The Korb + Associates-designed tower was initially planned to be 21 stories, but current changes put the tower at 23 stories. Under the tower's current design, it will provide 231 residences and 310 parking spaces.

21-story timber tower—proposed as North America's tallest—wins U.S. government grant

A downtown Milwaukee high-rise has found support from an unlikely source: the United States Department of Agriculture. The department’s Forestry Service division announced this week that it had awarded 41 grants totaling $8.9 million to businesses, universities, non-profits and tribal partners in 20 states to “create jobs, support fire-safe communities, restore healthy forest conditions, and spur environmentally sound innovation.”

Part of the grant will be allocated to Ascent, a potentially record-breaking mass timber tower in Milwaukee proposed by New Land Enterprises (previously on Archinect).

"The funds will be used to support engineering work on the proposed 21-story, 201-unit apartment building," reports Jeramey Jannene for Urban Milwaukee. "New Land is partnering with Korb + Associates Architects on the building’s design and New York-based Thornton Tomasetti on the building’s structural engineering."

Meanwhile north of the U.S.-Canada border, another timber tower proposal in Vancouver, the Perkins+Will-designed Canada Earth Tower, promises to rise up to 40 stories and become the "world's next tallest wooden skyscraper."

Preservation groups urge to protect Milwaukee's Marcus Center for the Performing Arts

The Marcus Center for the Performing Arts was designed by architect Harry Weese, with the surrounding landscape by Dan Kiley, and was completed in 1969. [...] In December 2018, the Center announced an overhaul of the cultural venue, the culmination of a months-long strategic planning process. However, the proposal drew backlash for its insensitve treatment of the Dan Kiley-designed landscape.

At the center of the historic designation discussion is the planned replacement of the 36 horse chestnut trees in front of the Marcus Center with a lawn bordered by 18 honey locust trees.

"Preservationists said removing the trees would harm the legacy of grove designer Dan Kiley, whose other works include the Cudahy Gardens in front of the Milwaukee Art Museum," writes Tom Daykin for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Proposed 21-story timber tower in Milwaukee would be Western Hemisphere's tallest wood building

New Land Enterprises has announced a bold plan to build a 21-story mass timber apartment building in East Town. If completed, the building, known as Ascent, would be the tallest timber structure in the Western Hemisphere according to the company. The news comes just months after New Land released plans to build a seven-story mass timber office building, the city’s first, along the Milwaukee River in Westown.

The timber tower scheme was designed by Milwaukee-based Korb + Associates Architects with structural engineering input from Thornton Tomasetti. If completed as proposed, the 21-story residential building would rise 238 feet—considerably more than the currently tallest timber building in the Americas.

Lingqian Hu elected as new chair of UWM Department of Urban Planning

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture & Urban Planning faculty have elected Lingqian Hu as the new Department of Urban Planning chair. Hu received her Bachelor of Planning degree from Nanjing University in China and a Master of Planning and doctorate in Policy, Planning, and Development from the University of Southern California. As an associate professor of urban planning, Hu teaches courses on transportation and land use planning, urban development theories, and transportation and GIS.

The school's Master of Urban Planning degree has recently been re-accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board for another seven years, making this an ideal time to focus on the future of its success. “I am humbled to take on this leadership role of the Urban Planning department,” Hu said.

Milwaukee Art Museum set to reopen after $34M renovation and expansion project

The Milwaukee Art Museum is due to reopen on 24 November after a 14-month, $34m renovation that brings the institution back from the brink. When the museum made the unorthodox decision to begin planning an expansion at the height of the recession in 2009, mould flourished, floors buckled and ceilings leaked in the two buildings that housed the permanent collection. [...] Roberts says: “People who know our museum will not believe that this is the same museum.”
