The 50,000-square-foot, $54.9 million project is set to take shape at a 3.4-acre former state Department of Natural Resources office with design and technical support from <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/2746/hga" target="_blank">HGA</a>. </p>
<p>The project, which follows Ford and <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/150309492/brandnu-design" target="_blank">BrandNu Design Studio</a>'s work on the new <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/2062102/universal-hip-hop-museum" target="_blank">Hip Hop Museum</a> in the South Bronx, New York, is meant to serve as the first home for the BCA after its formation in 2020. The firm's founder says the scope of his design will "both represent the rich history of the neighborhood and forecast its future."</p>

The city has reentered the race to build the world's tallest <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1038570/mass-timber" target="_blank">mass timber</a> building with a proposal for a new, 50-story tower designed by <a href="https://archinect.com/mg-architecture" target="_blank">Michael Green Architecture</a>. </p>
<p>Details of the reportedly <a href="https://milwaukeerecord.com/city-life/developer-proposes-tallest-mass-timber-building-in-world-tallest-building-in-wisconsin-for-iconic-snow-pile-site/" target="_blank">$700 million project</a> include a mixed-use design with 750 residential units, 300 hotel rooms, and 190,000 square feet of office space. The 24-person Vancouver-based firm is seen as a leader in mass timber design. </p>
<p>The current record-holder, <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1210313/ascent" target="_blank">Ascent MKE tower</a> by Korb + Associates, was on track to lose its title to the forthcoming <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150381704/record-setting-50-story-mass-timber-skyscraper-approved-in-perth" target="_blank">C6</a> project from <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/9586/elenberg-fraser" target="_blank">Elenberg Fraser</a> in Perth, Australia, (which is also 50 stories) before the announcement of the new tower (dubbed "The Neutral Project") was made. </p>

<p>Originally designed in 1903 to serve the Hillside Home School that was included in the 800-acre estate in the heavily forested Driftless Area, the space is now once again capable of hosting theatrical productions and will precede its public reopening with a series of film screenings and musical performances throughout the summer.</p>

Having worked with <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/4673/frank-lloyd-wright" target="_blank">Wright</a> to produce the furniture for the original 1939 building, Steelcase has sought to develop a new range that “reintroduces, reinterprets, and reimagines the classic furniture designs of Wright.”</p>

According to the design team, the largely concrete site will be converted into a “civic and soulful green gathering space that can be used by everyone, including employees and the local community.”</p>

<p>In one direction, The Hub will provide views of the original brick Harley-Davidson manufacturing buildings, while in the other, the space will provide views of a park filled with 120 native plant species and a planned market street, contemplative garden, and nature playground.</p>

<p>The two-story, 24,000-square-foot building was designed by <a href="https://archinect.com/steinberghart" target="_blank">Steinberg Hart</a> in collaboration with <a href="https://www.kpff.com/" target="_blank">KPFF</a> and an extensive team of timber engineering experts, fabricators, and forest product companies. One such firm to help bring this project to life is Madison, Wisconsin-based <a href="https://archinect.com/wholetrees" target="_blank">WholeTrees Structures</a>. The woman-owned national <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/282/timber/" target="_blank">timber</a> products company aims to "improve the economic viability between healthily managed forests and the rural communities" that surround them. </p>

<p>Lynch was known as the designer of seminal works throughout the Midwest region, including the Racine Art Museum, <a href="https://archinect.com/news/bustler/8901/aia-chicago-announces-the-2022-design-excellence-award-winners" target="_blank">award-winning</a> BARDAVID at the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/4069531/the-university-of-chicago" target="_blank">University of Chicago</a>’s new David Rubenstein Forum, and multiple residential projects across his adopted home city.</p>

Calatrava’s legacy in the city comes in the form of the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150296360/uwm-s-mo-zell-on-the-significance-of-calatrava-s-quadracci-pavilion-20-years-on" target="_blank">Milwaukee Art Museum’s Quadracci Pavilion</a>, known locally as “The Calatrava.”</p>
<p>The pavilion opened in 2001 following four years of construction. Designed in collaboration with local architect David Kahler Slater, the project was Calatrava’s first building in the United States. Three years after the pavilion’s completion, Calatrava would <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/725663/oculus" target="_blank">unveil his design</a> for the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/725663/oculus" target="_blank">World Trade Center Transportation Hub</a> in Lower Manhattan.</p>

On Monday, the Department of City Development (DCD) announced the development teams, a mix of nonprofit and for-profit developers, that will participate in the first round of the Homes MKE initiative. The participants were selected from a request-for-proposals (RFP) process that generated a tremendous response.</p></em><br /><br /><p>A total of 66 proposals were submitted, an unprecedented number according to the DCD, with 15 developers selected. <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/520229/milwaukee" target="_blank">Milwaukee</a> will sell the houses for as little as $1 and provide an estimated $75,000 development subsidy and grant a $5,000 workforce subsidy. Following the renovations, the properties can be sold to owner-occupants, rented out, or placed into a rent-to-own program. </p>
<p>The MKE initiative is funded by $394.2 million in federal money from the American Rescue Plan Act, which was created to offer pandemic aid. As <a href="https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2022/09/13/eyes-on-milwaukee-66-developers-bid-to-rehab-citys-vacant-homes/" target="_blank">reported</a> by <em>Urban Milwaukee</em>, the properties cannot be flipped to another investor-owner. Unless sold to an owner-occupant, the homes must be developer-owned for at least five years. In addition, developers are required to provide work to unemployed or underemployed city residents. 50% of employees must also reside in a collection of specific zip codes, and they must be paid a living wage of at least $12.21 per hour.</p>

The museum will also be a hub for research. </p>

<p>Zell has been an impactful fixture at SARUP, starting her career at the school as an assistant professor in 2008. Since then, she has taught several foundational design studios, acted as Associate Dean from 2012–18, and in 2018 was SARUP's first woman to be a Department Chair. </p>

As we have <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150264665/timber-prices-and-other-factors-are-exacerbating-america-s-housing-shortage" target="_blank">previously reported</a>, lumber prices across the United States saw a 90% increase in May 2021 on the previous 12 months, adding an extra $36,000 onto the cost of constructing a new home. In a relief for clients and contractors alike, that record high was followed by a <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150273354/lumber-prices-are-falling-fast-after-covid-19-disruption" target="_blank">record-breaking 40% decline in June 2021</a>, although lumber prices have continued their wide fluctuation into 2022.</p>
<p>Most analysts have laid the blame for this turbulent lumber market on short-term factors. These include pandemic-era labor shortages and supply chain shutdowns, <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150265887/u-s-could-double-tariffs-on-canadian-lumber-despite-soaring-timber-prices" target="_blank">potential looming tariffs</a> imposed by the U.S. on Canadian lumber imports, and even the 2021 Canadian truckers’ strikes.
</p>
<p>However, <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150299845/lumber-prices-are-still-soaring-and-not-just-because-of-covid-19" target="_blank">as we outlined in February</a>, these short-term contributors are further compounded by more fundamental long-term impacts. And not just become architects but to not check their culture at the door. When you can bring your total self into the design world, that’s where you can make a true contribution.”</p></em><br /><br /><p>The “<a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150070339/how-michael-ford-uses-hip-hop-to-introduce-architecture-to-underrepresented-youth" target="_blank">Hip Hop Architect</a>” took <em>Madison.com</em> on a site visit to the local Quarra Stone Co., where granite tiles are being made for a forthcoming installation at the National Guardian Life company’s headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. </p>
<p>For the project, Ford plans to erect a 25-foot-tall lobby installation with the company’s <a href="https://www.nglic.com/ArticleDetails/ArtMID/2221/ArticleID/269/Partnership-creates-custom-artwork-installation-focused-on-diversity" target="_blank">DEI statement</a> engraved across 360 individual tiles using his own self-developed hieroglyphic alphabet. (“It’s architecture that prompts people to do something,” he explained.)</p>

The result is a tripartite structure whose “stick, earth, stone” elements are meant to embody the sterling natural environment of the surrounding Sheboygan River Basin. <br></p>
