BIG's CopenHill waste-to-energy ski slope named World Building of the Year 2021

It doesn't happen every day that a large piece of urban infrastructure is crowned the globe's best new building design, but at today's closing ceremony of the annual World Architecture Festival, one industrial facility reigned supreme over a shortlist of 200 noteworthy new buildings: CopenHill, the illustrious waste-to-energy plant in Copenhagen also known as Amager Bakke, has been declared the World Building of the Year 2021.

Representing the Production, Energy & Recycling category, the Bjarke Ingels Group-designed project vastly expands the definition (and expectation) of an energy-sector facility, featuring a ski slope, hiking trail, and green terrains on its roof, sporting the world's tallest artificial climbing wall on its vertical facade as well as hosting a rooftop bar, cross-fit area, and a viewing plateau of the city.

And it's a wrap at the 2019 World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam. After three busy days of project presentations and jury deliberations, the annual global architecture industry event culminated in a glamorous gala dinner at the Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam's former stock exchange building, where the winners of various category and other top awards were announced.

The biggest anticipation of the night, of course, was reserved for the 2019 World Building of the Year title which happened to stay within the Netherlands with the selection of LocHal Public Library in Tilburg and its design team Civic architects (lead architect), Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau, and Inside Outside / Petra Blaisse.

WOHA's Kampung Admiralty is crowned World Architecture Festival Building of the Year for 2018

Marking the end of the World Architecture Festival, the winner of the 2018 World Building of the Year was presented to Kampung Admiralty by WOHA Architects. Having also won the award for the Commercial Mixed - Completed Projects, the firm can now add this prestigious award to their repertoire of accolades.

Known for their approach and passion in integrating social and environmental principles to their projects, Kampung Admiralty is a shining example of the firm's execution and methodology toward a high-density, high-amenity mini-city. Located in Northern Singapore, the building is comprised of community spaces, housing for the elderly, medical facilities, retail, restaurants, and cafes all shared within a single ventilated structure featuring a tropical rainforest roof.

The 2016 World Architecture Festival has come to a close. After a final round of presentations and jury critiques for the Day One and Two category winners, the National Museum in Szczecin in Poland made it to the top as the ninth recipient of the coveted World Building of the Year. Designed by Robert Konieczny/KWK Promes, the museum joins previous winners like The Interlace by OMA/Ole Scheeren in Singapore and a21studio's The Chapel in Vietnam.

During the Friday awards gala dinner, other winning announcements included South Melbourne Primary School by Hayball for Future Project of the Year, while the Kopupaka Reserve in Auckland, New Zealand by Isthmus scooped Landscape of the Year. Last but not least, the Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Architecture won Small Project of the Year for their ZCB Bamboo Pavilion.

In the blink of an eye, the World Architecture Festival held another successful competition in Singapore. Since the event kicked off this past Wednesday, 2,000 architects from around the globe gathered at Marina Bay Sands to witness more than 300 finalist teams give project presentations to the super jury for a chance to win. For 2016, WAF will make its way back to Europe in Berlin.

After the Day 1 and Day 2 category winners faced off in one last round of presentations, the jury deliberated the overall winning projects, which were announced during a gala dinner at Marina Bay Sands. For starters, OMA/Ole Scheeren's The Interlace housing project scooped up the World Building of the Year 2015 title, while BIG won Future Project of the Year with the Vancouver House.

The World Architecture Festival 2014 at the Marina Bay Sands closed on a festive note with the final top-prize winners being announced during a gala dinner and awards ceremony on October 3...The WAF "super jury" awarded the overall winning World Building of the Year award to The Chapel in Vietnam designed by Vietnamese architecture firm a21studio.
