Checking in on Jony Ive’s San Francisco plans post-Apple stardom

But for Mr. Ive, Jackson Square also represents personal reinvention. Few people walk away from their profession’s premier job. Even fewer start over again. A self-professed control freak, Mr. Ive decided that he had fretted enough over the snugness of each iPhone box, the layout of every Apple Watch component and the curve of every iPad corner. He wanted something new.

The former Chief Design Officer at Apple, Ive, is fresh off a $100 million-plus real estate buying spree in San Francisco’s Jackson Square, where a large-scale redevelopment is now planned for 2025. Clients of LoveFrom are paying up to $200 million for his services, per the Times. Ive formed the company in 2019. Lots of projects are still veiled in secrecy, including the development of an AI-powered computing experience that is "less socially disruptive than the iPhone."

Architect-turned-tech entrepreneur Evan Sharp is leaving the company he co-founded after 11 years to join former Apple design chief Jony Ive’s secretive new design startup called LoveFrom.

Sharp worked with Ben Silverman to develop what eventually became Pinterest in 2011 after studying at Columbia’s GSAPP, from which he graduated in 2008.

Sharp spoke with Archinect about his education and continued inclinations toward architecture as part of our Working out of the Box series in 2012:

“I do miss a lot of things about architecture: materials, the third dimension, the human scale of the work,” he said at the time, adding that he felt studying at the GSAPP helped him “learn how to approach design problems generally.”

Inside Foster + Partners newly remodeled Fifth Avenue Apple Store

"Now nearly double the size of its original version with a higher ceiling and more natural light, Apple Fifth Avenue is a brighter, more expansive space, and the perfect stage for customers to discover and try Apple’s newest products...It remains the only Apple retail location open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," Apple reported in a recent press release.

The design was led by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Jony Ive. The team has introduced a number of new features and changes to the underground retail space. Known by it's iconic glass cube and suspended Apple logo, the newly renovated store sports a new stainless steel spiral staircase, 62 skylights that connect the underground space to the city above, a new area for classes, and of course, extended space to display the newest products.

Apple design chief Jony Ive and retail head Angela Ahrendts are working together on a redesign of Apple's retail stores — a different approach that will make them better suited for selling the fashionable Apple Watch, according to a new report. Marc Newson to Join Apple, Jony Ive's Design Team

Newson, who will continue to be based in the United Kingdom, will be an employee of Apple, and will be frequently traveling to the company’s Cupertino, California, headquarters. The industrial designer has had his work archived by MoMA, and has been commissioned by Ford, Nike, and Qantas Airways, among others. Ive and Newson, who have been close friends for years, have been spending time together over the past year. During that time, they have also worked on some designs for Apple.
