UT Austin's Materials Lab awarded $60,000 grant to reframe collection with focus on sustainable materials

The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture's Materials Lab and Interior Design Program have been awarded a $60,000 grant from the Angelo Donghia Foundation. The money will be used to reimagine how students learn about materials by reframing the Materials Lab’s existing collection to better highlight sustainable products.

Beginning this fall, two graduate students and one undergraduate interior design student will work closely with Jen Wong, Lecturer and Director of the Materials Lab, to restructure the initiative’s circulating library and digital databases. They will be tasked with employing industry-standard sustainability criteria and certifications from resources, including the Mindful Materials database, the International Living Future Institute, and Building Green, to develop a new classification system for the collection. It will highlight materials relating to circularity, embodied carbon, health and toxicity, and social equity.

University of Texas at San Antonio announces high school partnership

The University of Texas at San Antonio School of Architecture and the San Antonio Independent School District are joining forces to create a new construction, architecture, and design academy that will bring college-level architectural education to high school students.

The San Antonio Express-News reports that the new academy will be run as a magnet program for juniors and seniors, with roughly 35-40 students per cohort.

The goal of the program, according to the article, is to funnel young people into "high-wage, high-demand" careers; The program will take place at UoT's downtown San Antonio campus, where the School of Architecture is located.

The arrangement will allow students to complete core curriculum courses at UoT while earning up to 42 college credits and is part of several blended high school-college programs the local school district is exploring in order to push students into the design and construction industries.

Edna Ledesma and Miriam Solis appointed to lead UT Austin School of Architecture diversity initiative

The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture appointed Edna Ledesma and Miriam Solis as its new faculty leaders for the Race and Gender in the Built Environment Initiative. Launched last fall by scholars Anna Livia Brand and Andrea Roberts, the ongoing initiative fosters teaching and research on race and gender-related issues in U.S. cities, and aims to facilitate diversity among design and planning professionals and students. Ledesma and Solis will replace Brand and Roberts for the upcoming 2017-18 academic year.

Ledesma, who is currently a lecturer at UTSOA, will join the school as a 2017-18 fellow. Her research focuses on understanding development and the evolution of the smart, green, and just 21st century city, with consideration to the cultural landscapes of immigrant populations and micro-economies. She acquired a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Science from Texas A&M University.

SNØHETTA establishes endowed scholarship for undergraduates at UTSOA

The Snøhetta Endowed Scholarship in Architecture, established by Craig Dykers and Elaine Molinar, will make its first award to a student recipient in fall 2012.

UT students and Austin residents gathered to explore the relationship between music and architecture through artistic performances Wednesday afternoon. Participants in the Music in Architecture competition created performances to explore how music can be inspired by architecture.
