Brookings research gives Los Angeles communities guidance for future ADU implementation

New research published recently by the Brookings Institution has provided details of how local government in Los Angeles can galvanize a newfound abundance of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) through policy changes in order to combat an ongoing housing crisis currently affecting more than one million Angelenos.

Authors Jenny Schuetz and Eve Devens state: “The Los Angeles region offers a useful setting to explore the prospects of affordable ADUs. Four jurisdictions within the region have developed affordable ADU pilot programs. One program, the city of Los Angeles’ LA ADU Accelerator Program, offers operating subsidies for existing ADUs, while the other three offer development subsidies as well as vouchers to cover operating costs.”

A new Brookings Institution report extends solutions to America's struggling office-to-residential conversion market

A new report published by the Brookings Institution is offering potential solutions for developers, architects, and urban planners engaged in office-to-residential conversions in the hopes of remedying the spate of downtown declines that are beginning to plague cities across the country.

Co-authors Tracy Hadden Loh, Egon Terplan, and DW Rowlands explain: “This report begins by identifying the five common arguments made by proponents for converting offices into housing. It then evaluates the myths and realities of each argument, using data from cities across the United States. It concludes with six recommendations for what cities should do about conversions and what other long-term strategies they could adopt.”

Today's poster comes from the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Department of Architecture with their Convention lecture series, curated by SDSU architecture instructor Sara Lum.

A quick summary about Convention:
"Convention investigates the established protocols related to notions of representation, geographical location, modes of practice, building techniques, and the return of history currently in question...While architectural projects both professional and academic respond to given criteria in multiple ways, agreed upon conventions serve as a way to communicate and validate intellectual production across a broad spectrum of projects."
