A fresh start at the Arch League's 2016 Beaux Arts Ball

The Architectural League started another cultural year on a high note at the 2016 Beaux Arts Ball, which took place at the new nARCHITECTS-designed A/D/O space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn last Friday. Co-chaired by architects Calvin Tsao and Zack McKown, this year's “Tabula Rasa” theme was all about celebrating creativity in progress, the act of fresh-thinking, and New York's ceaseless reinvention. Here are some photos from the event:

Over 1,200 architects, designers, and friends showed up to the yearly party. In tandem with the Tabula Rasa theme, guests got a good look inside the 23,000 square-foot still-in-progress A/D/O industrial space and were surrounded by natural stone slabs from ABC Worldwide Stone. Chef Fredrik Berselius of the acclaimed Nordic-inspired restaurant Aska curated a menu of light fare.

Cheers! Manhattan decriminalizes public drinking, urination

Beginning on Monday, March 7, 2016, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office will no longer prosecute most violations or infractions, and the NYPD will no longer arrest individuals who commit these offenses – such as littering, public consumption of alcohol, or taking up two seats on the subway – unless there is a demonstrated public safety reason to do so. This initiative will enable the NYPD to devote its resources to investigating serious crimes...

New Yorkers rejoice! A new initiative announced by the Manhattan District Attorney, the NYPD Commissioner and the Mayor means that you're now less likely to get arrested for sipping on a tallboy on your way back from a bodega.

While you still may get a summons and have to pay a fine, the announcement suggests you may just find yourself with a warning. Either way, this is good news – particularly for people of color, as about 81% of quality-of-life violations given in NYC between 2001 and 2013 were to African American or Hispanic individuals.

The changes also mean it's less likely for you to get arrested for urinating in public. As any visitor to Manhattan knows, a good public bathroom is hard to find.

The L.A. Forum for Architecture and Urban Design is partying along the Los Angeles River for ForumFest 2015, Bridge. Tunnel. Channel., happening at the Sixth Street Bridge tunnel on Sunday, October 25.

ForumFest highlights the historic Sixth Street Viaduct as a signifier of change in the city. The viaduct will be demolished in the coming weeks and be replaced by a new bridge by Michael Maltzan Architecture.

Enjoy a festive evening of DJs, live music, food and trucks, and artistic and musical surprises — all while supporting the L.A. Forum!

The party will feature temporary installations by architects and designers in the Forum’s 2015 Out There Doing It series: Typical Office (Duygun Inal and Ben Warwas); LA-BOR (Jia Gu and Jonathan Crisman); and PAR (Jennifer Marmon).

Architects, designers, and artists gathered at the Knockdown Center in Queens last Friday night for the Architectural League of New York's Beaux Arts Ball 2015. Co-chaired by Vishaan Chakrabarti of SHoP Architects and Maria Alataris, this year's "Threshold" theme kicks off another cultural year for The Architectural League and the New York design community. It also nods to the industrial history of the Knockdown Center, a former doorframe factory that was restored into an arts and performance space.

Every year, guests dress up, boogie down, socialize, and enjoy refreshments alongside fellow architects, all while helping support the League's programs.

Here's a glimpse of this year's party.

Inside the Knockdown Center's 50,000 square foot, 40-foot high spaces, the design offices of Alibi Studio, MODU, and Moorhead & Moorhead created site-specific “threshold” installations to play up the industrial space of the Knockdown.

Ain't No Party Like an Archinect Party: Treatise Launch at the VDL House

The Cognoscenti Coffee cocktails were flowing (and frothing) at the Neutra VDL House on Saturday May 2nd, as Archinect, the VDL House and the Graham Foundation hosted the book launch of Treatise, a series of publications wherein 14 relatively new design offices explored the question "Why Write Alone?" Featuring work from emerging talents such as Andrew Kovacs, Point Supreme, and SOFTLab, the project is part of a larger mandate to explore creative approaches to architecture, and was initially part of an exhibition featuring over 200 models, images, drawings, and multi-media installations curated by Jimenez Lai in Chicago in January.

Several hours into the party, the stylishly-dressed Lai mounted the gravel strewn median above the courtyard to toast the Graham Foundation for providing the grant that made Treatise possible. He also thanked Archinect's Paul Petrunia for hosting the event, to which over 250 attendees affirmatively R.S.V.P.-ed.

Festivities ensue at the Beaux Arts Ball 2014: Craft in New York

The Architectural League of New York hosted another successful Beaux Arts Ball this year at Weylin B. Seymour's in Williamsburg, New York this past Saturday night. In spirit of the ball's 2014 theme "Craft", eight architects and designers collaborated with Nuit Blanche New York in creating digital art projections inspired by the gorgeous interior motifs and details of the historic Weylin B. Seymour's building.

Digitally carved onto the arches of the venue's central domed hall, the installation helped create a festive environment as hundreds of well-dressed guests enjoyed drinks and desserts, and danced the night away with music by pazel. It was a fancy occasion indeed.

Prada Celebrates Architecture Exhibit in Paris

Curated by architect and historian Joseph Abram, in collaboration with Rem Koolhaas’ OMA/AMO, the exhibition celebrates the work of Perret, in particular his extended use of reinforced concrete. The exhibition analyzes, through more than 400 original documents such as sketches, pictures, scale models and personal letters, eight buildings conceived by Perret. These include the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, along with the Hôtel de Ville and the Eglise Saint Joseph in Le Havre.

The LA Forum is a discussion platform for local architecture and urbanism, where design professionals and the general public alike can reflect on the nature and impact of architecture in Los Angeles.

Michael Maltzan was a natural choice for this year's ForumFest honoree -- established in Los Angeles since 1995, his firm embraces the diverse, sometimes contradictory Los Angeles landscape, while retaining a recognizable personality and form specific to his practice. He has also contributed to the architectural discourse on Los Angeles through multiple essays and critical pieces. Maltzan is perhaps most well-known in Los Angeles for his work with the Skid Row Housing Trust, as well as his many architectural and urban planning projects at the intersection of education...

Over 1,350 people attended this year's Beaux Arts Ball at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City on Sept. 28. Hosted by the Architectural League of New York — and with Archinect/Bustler as one of the media sponsors — the annual evening event brought together the architecture and design community for a centennial celebration of the infamous 1913 "Armory Show" — when European modern art was introduced into the U.S. The sold-out Ball also helps support other Arch. League events.

Special shoutout to long-time Archinectors John Jourden, Aaron Plewke, and Quilian Riano who attended the Ball!

Here's what Aaron Plewke shared with Bustler on the event:

"The overall environmental effect created for this year's ball was quite successful. The white tarp-like canopies created an intimate space at the center of the dark and voluminous armory hall. The sound installation built from a dream-like drone steadily toward a beat-heavy dance party. Large Mylar puppets marched rhythmically through the space, adding spectacle, and pushing vertically into the dark void above."

Only a few more days until New York City's 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue opens its doors this Saturday night for an event extraordinaire: the Beaux Arts Ball hosted annually by the Architectural League of New York. This year's ball marks the centennial celebration of the iconic 1913 "Armory Show," so the theme for 2013 will be "–ism" and guests are invited to dress playfully as their favorite "ism."

The Architectural League also recently announced its 2013 fall "Current Work" lecture series, held in conjunction with the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union. The lineup includes Richard Meier, David Adjaye, Toshiko Mori, Thomas Phifer, and many others.

Rotterdam icon becomes 24-hour city

Architecture Day Friday 21 and Saturday 22 June 2013
One of the most iconic buildings in Rotterdam, the Hofpoort on the Hofplein, will be transformed into a 24-hour city on Friday 21 June and Saturday 22 June. All are welcome to come and eat, drink, dance, relax, breakfast, discover, meet, skate, create, shop and much more. For a full 24 hours the Hofpoort will be the epicentre of Architecture Day in Rotterdam.

The Hofplein area used to be regarded as the pulsing heart of Rotterdam. AIR, the Rotterdam architecture centre, ZUS – De Dépendance centre for urban culture and Rotterdam ArchiGuides are joining forces to bring it back to life again on Architecture Day. For 24 hours they will combine to transform the Hofpoort into a vertical city where there is something new to experience every hour.

Unused water tower in Chelsea converted into a one-time exclusive party venue

The Heron’s architect was N. D. Austin, a 31-year-old artist known for what he calls “trespass theater.” “It’s about making the invisible visible,” he said of his philosophy. Mr. Austin located a suitable water tower by scouring Buildings Department records for violations with egregious scaffold fines. That can indicate a neglectful landlord, he said, which meant it might be a vacant building ripe for adopting as one’s own.

One Saturday night last month, 12 guests squeezed through the trap door into the space. “The great thing about the upright bass is how it got up here,” said Dirby Luongo, one of Mr. Austin’s collaborators who played the doorman. “It’s like a ship in a bottle.”

Remember how four years ago French architecture collective EXYZT and filmmaker Sara Muzio created the acclaimed Southwark Lido, a temporary bath in the heart of London? Well, they're certainly back - this summer with...BEER! The reUNION Public House sets out to celebrate a "cornerstone of British life" and will be serving a selection of London's finest micro-brewed beers while hosting neighborhood feasts, live music, and film screenings.

According to the organizers, "The reUNION will go further in testing the economic sustainability of pop-ups, and their potential influence on permanent urban development."
