Ben Derbyshire from HTA Design voted President Elect of the RIBA

In September 2017 Ben Derbyshire will officially become RIBA President-Elect, taking over from the current President Jane Duncan.

Commenting on the announcement on HTA's website he said:

“Once again we find ourselves in turbulent times. In winning this election I am conscious of a great sense of responsibility owed to architects everywhere, in all corners of the UK and overseas. Jane Duncan has laid the foundations for change at the RIBA that I look forward to driving forward, when I take up the role of President. My primary goal is to champion architects so that they, our sister professions and clients, can advance architecture as the cornerstone of the well-designed and more sustainable built environment society desperately needs. All architects, wherever and however we practice, need an RIBA that works for us."

“The RIBA is a global organisation that supports its members, validates schools of architecture and champions the importance of a quality built environment around the world. UK architecture talent is incredibly resilient and we will continue to ensure that our profession has a bright future, whatever the operating environment.

“Clearly there is uncertainty about the timescales and impact on a range of issues important to our industry including free movement in the EU for architects as well as students, trading and material sourcing, inward investment relationships, EU procurement rules and the effect on the construction sector if restrictions are placed on EU migration.

RIBA set to open national architecture centre in Liverpool

Liverpool's Riba North will have conference facilities and a gallery "at its heart", a spokeswoman said. It will open in August with an exhibition of designs for Liverpool that were never built. The centre, which will be housed in the Broadway Malyan-designed Mann Island on the city's waterfront, "will offer a magnificent opportunity to display Riba's historic collections, telling hundreds of years of the UK's extraordinary architectural history", Duncan said.

RIBA announces 30 projects selected for International Prize

The 30 buildings to be visited by the RIBA awards committee and under consideration for the inaugural RIBA International Prize have been announced today. This is the first RIBA award open to any qualified architect in the world and includes projects of varying size and budget.

Consequently the buildings span 20 different countries across the globe such as; Mexico, Turkey, Dublin and Vietnam. The selected projects will be whittled down to 20 and then a final six in the autumn, with the winner announced in December 2016.

The six finalist chosen will be visited by the Grand Jury which includes Richard Rogers, Billie Tsien and Marilyn Jordan Taylor FAIA among others.

RIBA launches 2016 funding for new architecture research

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is calling for applications from students, academics and practitioners interested in conducting research in architecture during 2016/17.

The RIBA Boyd Auger Scholarship aims to support applicants in their personal, professional and academic development within the architectural field, providing an opportunity for imaginative, original research, and travel.

In 2016, one scholarship worth £5,000 is available to individuals or groups of students and graduates for a period of international travel (which can be during a period of international work experience).

The RIBA Research Trust Awards are offering grants of up to £10,000 each, available to support original independent architecture research by practitioners, academics and recent graduates.

The judging committee particularly welcomes applications from practice-led researchers.

The Royal Institute of British Architects today announced the result of its presidential election: Jane Duncan, director of Jane Duncan Architects, will become President Elect on September 1, 2014 and will take over the two-year elected presidency from Stephen Hodder on September 1, 2015. Jane Duncan will be the 75th RIBA President.

“I am delighted to be elected and to have the mandate from RIBA members to undertake my election pledges on improving pride, fees and diversity within the architecture profession," said Jane Duncan after the announcement of the election result. "Over the next year I will be working hard to support Stephen Hodder and visiting and talking to members and staff across the UK.”
