Carmody Groarke develops bricks made of city waste for museum facade in Ghent, Belgium

Waste from the city of Ghent, Belgium, is being turned into the building blocks of a major cultural institution. For a renovation and expansion of the Design Museum Gent, an innovative new recycling process is turning old bits of broken concrete and glass into the bricks that will cover the museum’s exterior.

The Gent Waste Brick was designed by London-based practice Carmody Groarke in partnership with materials designers BC Materials and Local Works Studio. Together, they developed an energy-saving method that takes ground construction waste materials, mainly crushed concrete, masonry, and glass, from demolished buildings and infuses lime to form dry-cured bricks. This approach utilizes local materials rather than extracting clay or importing mass-produced bricks from elsewhere. As reported by Fast Company, the materials were collected mostly from within five miles of the museum.

The bricks are formed in a shipping container-sized mobile processor and then dry cure for 60 days, a much less energy-intensive process than traditional brick production. As a result, they will reportedly produce a third of the amount of carbon dioxide over a 60-year lifespan than a conventional brick. Researchers from Flinders University have developed bricks made from waste materials that don't require mortar to bond

Researchers from Flinders University’s Chalker Research Lab have developed a more sustainable alternative to making bricks by using waste products.

The team used low-cost feedstocks to make lightweight but durable polymer building blocks, which can be bonded together with an adhesive-free chemical reaction. Their study tested the strength of these materials and explored ways they can be reinforced in construction.

The UK's new Part O regulations are being implemented at the right time

New regulations, called Part O, took effect in England in June, requiring that new homes are built with some measures to combat overheating. The regulations aim to reduce solar gain — the increase in room temperature caused by sunlight — ensuring the safety of occupants, even if it may remain uncomfortable.

Hundreds of UK residents died in this week’s “heat apocalypse” that posed particular challenges to those living in the country’s many recently-converted office buildings and council housing. Brick masonry remains the predominant residential construction material, though Low Energy Architectural Practice Principal Mark Siddall says the regulations will “help designers, architects and engineers make more informed decisions so that the risk of overheating can be reduced in new properties.”

One of designer Kashef Chowdhury and URBANA’s superlative recent works has received a huge honor from the UK’s oldest architectural organization. The Royal Institute of British Architects has today announced the firm’s Friendship Hospital project in Bangladesh as the winner of the 2021 International Prize for the World’s Best New Building.

The rural hospital is one of several firm projects in the country commissioned by a nonprofit group called Friendship that looks to empower underdeveloped communities in different regions of the country through hands-on social innovation and collaboration. The hospital provides the village of Satkhira, which has been heavily impacted by rising sea levels related to climate change. GRAFT revitalizes historical post office into mixed-use brick complex

GRAFT has revitalized a historical post office in Berlin, expanding it with two buildings and converting the existing rooftops into commercial spaces. Accessible to the public, the new complex includes offices, restaurants, retail space, and apartments.

The original post office building is protected as a historical monument. The existing structures create several courtyards, which have been renewed in this project. Moreover, brick facades were used for the new buildings to situate the additions within the historical aesthetic.

Open plans fill the commercial space, creating a barrier-free fluidity and flexibility for tenants. Additional windows were added to the upper levels, allowing fresh entry for natural light within the buildings.

ADEPT adds timeless brickwork facade to historic Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen

The historic Carlsberg Brewery site in Copenhagen has opened to the public and has developed into a new urban neighborhood called the Carlsberg City. The preserved buildings were transformed by a number of European architects, creating a contemporary merging of the historical and the modern.

Copenhagen-based architecture firm ADEPT contributed the Theodora House, a mixed-use complex named after the daughter of Carlsberg'd founder, to the district. Part of the building complex is new construction and the other is an adaptive re-use of a former yeast storage space now occupied by offices.

The new portion of the complex is made up primarily of apartments with additional space for shops and cafes. The architectural brick facade connects the new and the old, tying the color and materiality of the new building to the existing surrounding structures with a novel and modern approach that is achieved by rotating some of the brick units that make up the facade.

Bricklaying robot gets to work delivering "wall as a service" construction

The Australian company promoting the brick- and block-laying robot Hadrian X has entered a series of agreements with housebuilders in Australia and Mexico with a view to getting demonstration homes built. Fastbrick Australia, a joint venture between Hadrian X inventor Fastbrick Robotics (FBR Ltd) and Australian building supplies company Brickworks Building Products, hopes the agreements will get traction for its “Wall-as-a-Service” concept in the two countries’ sizeable home-building markets.

FBR's Hadrian X robots can build multi-room structures from 3D CAD models with no human intervention. In addition to new contracts with Australian and Mexican entities, the company has also inked deals with builders and fabricators in Saudi Arabia and Austria, among others.

A recent test using one of the Hadrian X robots, according to the FBR blog, built a three-bedroom, two-bathroom "full home structure" made up of 2,420 "Hadrian-optimised blocks" that generated only 5.5 blocks' worth of waste, or roughly 0.2% of the overall total.

Elon Musk takes first steps in opening store to sell his lego-like Boring bricks

Elon Musk has filed permits with the city of Los Angeles to launch his Boring Company offshoot, The Brick Store LLC, which would produce interlocking bricks made from dirt collected by his tunnel-digging company's operations.

As the Boring Company's LA test tunnel nears completion—an opening date has been set for this coming December 10th—the company has selected a building near the exit tunnel to locate the physical outlet for his brick making startup. Plans filed with the city of Hawthorne show the Brick Store's first brick-and-mortar will take over a humble, one story stucco building and give the former cabinet shop a fresh coat of paint.

Students at University of Cape Town grow bio-brick made from human urine

Students at the University of Cape Town have developed a bio-brick that mixes sand, bacteria and human urine. Unsurprisingly, it is the world's first building material to be made from the liquid waste high in nitrogen and phosphorous.

The brick is created through a process called microbial carbonate precipitation, a complex reaction that has many applications. It has been used to improve concrete's durability, as a historical preservation technique on stone, and as a way of improving soil.

Here, when urine is mixed with sand and bacteria, the resulting chemical reaction produces calcium carbonate, which hardens the mixture and forms the brick. According to the scientists, it is similar to the way seashells are formed.

Boring Company to start selling LEGO-like interlocking bricks made from tunneling rock

Elon Musk announced that the Boring Company will sell LEGO-like interlocking bricks made from rock that his tunneling machines excavate from the earth. Musk stated these bricks will be sold in "kits" and will be rated to withstand California's earthquakes.

The date of availability or cost of this latest product is unknown. While his company has only started digging shorter tunnels there is not enough upturned rock to begin making these bricks yet.

The imaginary realm of architecture frequently ventures off into scales that are improbable, if not outright impossible, on the politically and gravitationally constrained Earth (think Étienne-Louis Boullée, or Lebbeus Woods). In a similar if less secular vein, Napp Studio has conceived of an enormous, walkable brick wall that would feature every verse of the bible and/or other spiritual texts inscribed on titled, lightbulb-illuminated bricks. The idea here is to create the sensation of leafing through a book page by page, with each page being loosely represented by a brick.

As the architects note, "The bricks are books written with text of living stories of the everyday reality, yet, a reality with hope. Hope is the most significant spiritual grain we rely on when facing the sometime harsh life, it provides us with strength and will – the light to live on." These bricks are like Lego for full-sized buildings

Kite Bricks has developed "Smart Bricks" (S-Bricks) made out of high-strength concrete that can be used to make buildings rapidly, cheaply and energy efficiently. The bricks -- which are patent pending -- are much like Lego in that they come in a variety of forms for different purposes and can easily connect together, with rows of knobs along the top of bricks that slot into voids along the bottom of other bricks.
