World Architecture Festival Awards reveals 2022 shortlist

<p>Competing under the theme of <em>Together</em>, the 420 total projects will vie for the live-judged festival’s 43 category prizes and culminating World Building, Future Project, Interior, and Landscape of the Year awards at the three-day event, which kicks off in Lisbon on November 30th. A new International Building Beauty Prize has been added for the 2022 cycle as well. </p>
<p>This year’s expanded shortlist includes projects from <a href="https://archinect.com/fosterandpartners" target="_blank">Foster + Partners</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/zaha-hadid" target="_blank">Zaha Hadid Architects</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/327/mvrdv" target="_blank">MVRDV</a>, and a host of other large international firms, in addition to a number of lesser-known and small projects hailing from countries like Portugal, Thailand, Finland, and Malaysia.</p>

<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/d2/d249de1430bfbb3d4c1499b2a35a9dd9.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>In culmination of the two organization's shared annual awards program, the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/14206/world-architecture-festival" target="_blank">World Architecture Festival</a> and <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/320633/inside-world-festival-of-interiors" target="_blank">INSIDE Festival of Interiors</a> have just named the Capsule Hostel and Bookstore in Qinglongwu, China as the 2021 winner of the World Interior of the Year prize. </p>
<p>The design features a 20-person hostel and community bookstore space inserted into a 232-square-meter (2,500-square-foot) stone house set amongst the richly forested landscape of Zhejiang Province.</p>

<p>Representing the Production, Energy & Recycling category, the <a href="https://archinect.com/bjarke-ingels-group" target="_blank">Bjarke Ingels Group</a>-designed project vastly expands the definition (and expectation) of an energy-sector facility, featuring a ski slope, hiking trail, and green terrains on its roof, sporting the world's tallest artificial climbing wall on its vertical facade as well as hosting a rooftop bar, cross-fit area, and a viewing plateau of the city.</p>

<p>Continuing with the Festival's awards program announcements, following is this year's shortlist for the <a href="https://www.worldarchitecturefestival.com/best-use-certified-timber-prize-shortlist-2020-2021" target="_blank">WAF Certified Timber Prize</a>. According to Ben Gunneberg, CEO of Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC): "It is inspiring to see the large variety
of buildings in the finals, benefitting from the use of certified timber in so many ways. While some
of the architects chose timber for its flexibility and robustness, others appreciate its natural look

As media partners of the WAF 2021 Awards, <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150275012/view-the-best-new-buildings-and-landscapes-in-this-year-s-world-architecture-festival-awards-shortlist" target="_blank">Archinect showcased a selection of shortlisted projects for this year's World Architecture Festival awards program</a>. According to the World Festival of Interiors, "this year's shortlist consists of over 100 of the very best designed interior projects by some of the world's foremost design and architecture firms across more than 20 countries." </p>
<p>Covering 11 categories ranging from hotels, workplaces, homes, and restaurants, all shortlisted projects and design teams will "go on to compete in the live-judging in front of a panel of industry experts and an audience of their peers at the festival in Lisbon," explains the Festival. </p>

<p>The theme for the 2021 edition of the festival is <em>Resetting the City: Greening, Health, and Urbanism,</em> and the awards attracted submissions across 20 completed buildings and landscape categories; an "increase of 44% in submissions from 2019's edition of the festival."</p>

After three busy days of project presentations and jury deliberations, the annual global architecture industry event culminated in a glamorous gala dinner at the Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam's former stock exchange building, where the winners of various category and other top awards were announced. <br></p>

Architecture</a> is a regenerated Japanese Colonial residential house in Taipei that preserves its past while accommodating the modern-living needs of its occupants. Today, the project was announced as the 2019 World Interior of the Year at the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors in Amsterdam, following a final showdown between the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/bustler/7599/the-2019-inside-world-festival-of-interiors-category-winners-who-will-be-crowned-world-interior-of-the-year" target="_blank">nine category winners</a> that were revealed yesterday. The JCA Living Lab won the Residential category.</p>
<p>Local craftspeople were brought in when needed and recycled elements were also incorporated into the design. The house combines traditional craftsmanship with modern detailing, like the hanging circular light in the living room, against a backdrop of preserved materials. A roof skylight shapes a path that acts as a guide for the entire house.</p>

The last two days saw this year's nominated designers face off in a live competition at RAI Amsterdam in hopes to be named one of the 10 category winners. </p>
<p>After one final round of presentations by the category winners, the jury awarded the coveted grand prize to the Yumin Art Nouveau Collection for “its crafted sensitivity, to both the building and the Gallé glass to which the museum [is] dedicated”.</p>

<p>Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, the World Architecture Festival has revealed its speaker line up for the 2017 event taking place at the Arena Berlin for the second time from <strong>15-17 November</strong>.</p>
<p>A collection of world-class architects will come together to speak at the event including <strong>Pierre de Meuron, Alison Brooks, Rafael Viñoly and Charles Jencks</strong>.</p>
<p>This year’s programme responds to the Festival’s theme, ‘Performance’, and will include speeches, discussions and debates examining the topic of performance from the perspectives of housing, public spaces, festivals, cultural institutions and new technologies.</p>

The awards will be celebrated at the <a href="https://www.worldarchitecturefestival.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">World Architecture Festival</a> (WAF) in Singapore this November, following three days of intensive live presentations and judging.</p><p>Entries are now invited from architects and designers for the 2015 edition of what is the biggest architectural awards program in the world. The awards are expected to attract more than 750 entries, about half of which will be shortlisted, in 31 categories. Reduced early bird rate ends May 1 and the final closing date for entries is May 22. Shortlisting takes place in early June.</p><p>Shortlisted entrants will compete for category prizes on the first two days of the three-day Festival, which takes place in the Suntec Centre on November 4, 5 and 6. The "super jury" of the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors competition nominated 60 interior design projects worldwide, which were then narrowed down to nine category winners. When deciding upon the World Interior of the Year out of the category winners, the jury unanimously decided on MOTT32.</p></em><br /><br /><p><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/514x/j2/j2i5stpxyx7pfzoo.jpg"></p><p>The 10-person team of Joyce Wang Studio explored Hong Kong culture's past and present in transforming the former storage facility, which housed expensive family heirlooms for wealthy Chinese immigrants, into the MOTT32 restaurant.
