University of Toronto researchers develop a fluid-based light filtering technology to help with heating, cooling and lighting in buildings

A new prototype multilayered fluid window system devised by researchers at the University of Toronto may have the potential to be an effective tool in the push toward greater sustainability in the building industry, according to their research published in the national academy of sciences journal PNAS.

The technology is based on principles derived from animal biology and was developed by recent mechanical engineering master’s graduate Raphael Kay with the help of Associate Professor Ben Hatton and his team over a period of years, including Ph.D. candidate Charlie Katrycz and Alstan Jakubiec, an assistant professor in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design

SHoP's 111 West 57th Street supertall tower is one important step closer to completion

A milestone development on the way to what is one of the most anticipated new openings of the year as the exteriors have been completed on SHoP’s award-winning 111 West 57th Street supertall tower in Midtown Manhattan.

Once completed, the building will stand as the second-tallest residential structure in the Western Hemisphere and sit atop the landmark Steinway Hall building, which houses 14 of the 60 total full-floor and duplex residences located within the 1,428-foot-tall development.

The exterior is defined by a stepped design that tapers along the south-facing facade as it reaches ever skyward to create a dramatic visual statement in combination with an east-west oriented terra cotta pilaster cladding system and a 300-foot decorative steel crown.

Cartier dazzles with new Hinoki facade designed by Klein Dytham

A new storefront for Cartier’s Osaka operations has been unveiled, bringing a decorative feel to the city’s glittering Shinsaibashi district with a glowing facade composed of over 2,500 interlocking three-dimensional masu boxes handcrafted by master carpenters in Kyoto.

Tokyo-based Klein Dytham Architecture wrapped the luxury retailer in an Hinoki wood facade using a recycled aluminum framework meant to mirror the brand’s commitment to sustainability.

The structure can be illuminated thanks to built-in LED lights and is complete with a double-height arched window entrance that gives a sharp contrast to nearby glass-curtained retail establishments.

Winthrop Center is making progress in its quest to become the world's largest Passive House office building

Curtain wall construction has begun on what will become the world’s largest passive house office building, marking an important milestone in the drive to give Boston an iconic and environmentally friendly new skyscraper that could help the city meet its carbon-free mandate by midcentury.

Winthrop Center is awaiting certification from the Passive House Institute conferring its office portion with a status that, once completed, will make it the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.

Handel’s vision for the 52-story center is a mixed-use development that includes a bar, restaurants, 321 luxury residences, and a triple-high atrium gathering space dubbed The Connector that seeks to blur lines between indoor and outdoor space in the through-block site along Federal Street to the adjacent Winthrop Square.

DXA Studio brings faceted concrete housing towers to Chelsea

A pair of identical 20-story residential towers designed by DXA Studio are on the rise in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood.

The twin towers feature a contextual facade designs highlighted by serial punched windows and building setbacks that align the towers' height to those of the surrounding structures. The upperlevel setbacks for the tower break from the street wall to make space for planted roof terraces.

Instead of featuring brick facades like those surrounding buildings, however, the new structures are wrapped in faceted precast architectural concrete panels. The repeating concrete panels are either black or white, depending on the tower, and offer subtle changes in surface geometry that catch the sun and create shadows to create stark geometric patterns.

UN Studio brings a responsive solar skin to an existing office tower in Seoul

Dutch architects UNStudio have recently completed the top-to-bottom renovation and re-skinning of an existing office tower in Seoul for corporation company Hanwha.

The eye-catching project is notable due to the fact that the extensive renovation and re-cladding were executed while the building remained occupied by the company and its workforce. According to a press release describing the project, construction teams worked three floors at a time, starting at the ground floor lobby and surrounding landscaped spaces and moving up to the tower's new top-floor restaurants and office suites.

Gansam Partners served as the Executive Architect while Loos van Vliet provided landscape design services for the project. Additionally, ARUP Hong Kong provided facade and sustainability expertise and AG Licht acted as lighting consultant.

UNStudio's new facade renovation in Amsterdam showcases a playful approach to glass

UNStudio's facade design for P.C. Hoofstraat 138 in Amsterdam is a playful spin on the idea of window displays. Aiming to provide the Dutch flagship store to have a subtle yet distinctly eye-catching storefront, the team at UNStudio created The Looking Glass. Said to be a "celebration textiles in both form and function," the store's facade showcases three large curved panels that flow from the store's street base to the building's top.

According to UNStudio, the glass design is said to mimic billowing transparent cloth. Sou Fujimoto's eye-catching apartment tower, L'Arbre Blanc, is a cantilevered spectacle

When the project was first announced in 2014, many waited in anticipation as renderings of L'Arbre Blanc tower surfaced. The 17-story tower is said to be modeled after the shape of a tree with balconies 'branching out' from the cylindrical shaped building. Located in Montpellier, France, Sou Fujimoto was joined by Nicolas Laisné, Dimitri Roussel, and OXO Architectes to complete the project.

Moscow apartment buildings come to life with facade featuring The Great Wave off Kanagawa

A series of apartment buildings in Moscow have been covered with iconic Japanese artwork. Part of the Etalon City apartment complex, the architects had the 6 towers placed along the highway painted with a replica of The Great Wave off Kanagawa—Katsushika Hokusai’s famed woodblock print—spanning the 60,000 square meter facade.

Behind, the other buildings making up the complex have been given colorful patterns inspired by other cities including New York, Chicago, Barcelona, and Monaco. Splashes of yellow, blue, orange, and green cover three zigzagged apartment towers, while the public areas and landscape design will also pay homage to various locations.

The massive housing development is located in the south-western region of Moscow, and includes retail, social facilities, and a science park.

MVRDV completes a white and gold entertainment complex by Seoul’s Incheon Airport

MVRDV has recently completed The Imprint, a new 2-building art and entertainment complex next to Seoul’s Incheon Airport. Featuring a nightclub in one building and indoor theme park in the other, the windowless structures are part of the larger Paradise City complex of 6 buildings next to South Korea's largest airport.

The program required an expressive facade with no windows. The firm created an imprint based design using façade features of the surrounding buildings, lifted entrances, and a golden entrance spot covering one corner of the nightclub building.

Tour the optical illusion of Giovanni Vaccarini's facade system for the SPG Headquarters

Relax, you don't need new glasses: the closely spaced, suspended panes of glass on Giovanni Vaccarini's SPG Headquarters in Geneva purposefully create a blurred/vibrating effect, especially when viewed from a distance.

However, producer The Piranesi Experience and filmmaker Claudio Esposito have made a film about the SPG called "Deep Into the Surface" which, according to the filmmakers "investigates the abstract and conceptual dimension that architect Giovanni Vaccarini imparted to the façade system that characterizes the building of the SPG Headquarters in Geneva. A game made of simple rules, whose reiteration produces a complex play of elements to the point that its perception varies with weather and lights. The photography by Fabio Paolucci and the original soundtrack by Populous underline the exploration of these qualities and let the spectator perceive the depth of the surface and its apparent movement." To accommodate a rapidly growing number of inhabitants in a limited area of land, the emphasis is on space efficiency – which often translates into extremes of verticality and compact living. Alex Nimmo grew up in the English countryside but moved to Hong Kong three years ago. The contrast, as you might imagine, was sharp.

You might be unsure of exactly what you’re looking at when you first see the images in Roland Fischer’s series “Facades.” [...] “I noticed all these new buildings mushrooming everywhere, giving the impression that they could as well be from any other major town in the world,” Fischer wrote via email. “I thought that this was a new urban visual experience, a consequence naturally of the then still new process of globalization.”
