LA’s cramped rezoning plan still short of housing goals says UCLA study Josh Niland2024-11-19T11:09:00-05:00>2024-11-19T16:56:11-05:00

Measures under consideration by a City Council committee are likely to satisfy the state requirements, the UCLA analysis found. But when analyzing the likelihood of what developers would actually build, researchers found the number of new homes would be far lower.

The L.A. City Council is expected to vote later this afternoon to approve the rezoning measure. The report's co-author Shane Phillips of the UCLA Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies says the city would be better served if its generous slate of incentives was expanded to cover the remaining 72% of neighborhoods currently zoned for single-family houses. Others have labeled this plan as exclusionary for that reason. Planners face a state mandate to find space for at least 250,000 new housing units by mid-February.

Steele will be stepping in to replace interim dean Willow Bay, who was appointed back in July 2022, following the quiet departure of former architecture dean Milton Curry.

Steele is no stranger to leading prominent schools of architecture. Prior to his new future position at USC, he served as UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture dean since 2017. Before his time working in Los Angeles, he held pivotal leadership positions at the Architectural Association (AA), serving as a chief executive and Director since 2005. Prior to that, he created and led the AA Design Research Lab, the school's first accredited Master of Architecture program, for eight years.

According to USC President Carol Folt, "Brett Steele’s collaborative leadership is a perfect fit for our School of Architecture. One of the things that impress...

Our infrastructure is aging, and as it does, we face dilemmas around what to do with it. Renovate? Replace? Eliminate?

Today, these age-old questions are complicated by the climate crisis: threats like rising, warming seas, and–evidenced vividly this summer–wildfires and extreme heat call for innovation in how we treat our aging buildings and cities. While architects mull these questions, they are also considering their field's contributions to the climate crisis–emissions and carbon footprints, material waste, and environmental displacement.

Dilemmas abound, but Julia Koerner sees immense opportunity around 3D printing at the scale of buildings and houses. It’s an area she has been investigating for years as a professor, architect, researcher, and designer.
March 26th will mark the completed transformation of the 33-year-old Westside institution, with a new facade, lobby, and entrance from Wilshire Boulevard welcoming visitors into its enhanced spaces while acting like a gateway to Westwood Village and the university campus beyond.

Maltzan said: “We had a clear vision of what the Hammer should become, from the moment we began designing the master plan for what was then a cloistered, private museum of historic European painting. That clarity sustained us through a process that demanded extraordinary persistence and inventiveness, because we needed to work in phases as we reshaped, reconfigured, opened, and expanded the Hammer. Dubbed a ‘mechanical neural network’ by its creators, the material uses a unique lattice structure that can improve its ability to deal with unexpected forces over time.

The mechanical neural network derives its strength from the geometries that comprise the structure rather than the properties of the materials used to create it. “Take hook-and-loop fabric closures like Velcro, for example,” explained UCLA’s Ryan H. Lee in a recent article on The Conversation. “It doesn’t matter whether it is made from cotton, plastic or any other substance. As long as one side is a fabric with stiff hooks and the other side has fluffy loops, the material will have the sticky properties of Velcro.”

The award supports the development of a process that can convert carbon dioxide emissions into construction materials, as described in UCLA's press release.

An additional $905,000 from UCLA discretionary funds and industry partners has also been allotted to the research. According to UCLA, the technology captured carbon dioxide from raw flue gas as it exits power plants, cement plants and other producers of carbon dioxide. Sant says the resulting product will have a carbon footprint 50% to 70% lower than regular concrete used in construction.

[...] So Sant and his team set to work on a greener approach that starts with a compound called portlandite instead of traditional Portland cement.
The production of portlandite also releases CO2. After releasing an open call for fellowship applications earlier this year, four fellows have been chosen to help spearhead Google's newest branch of research, design, and development.

During the fellowship, participants will focus on discovering new ways to accelerate design ideas for the built environment. The paid, six-month design fellowship will enable candidates to test ideas in areas like building material science, affordable housing, and AI/machine learning to name a few.

Each candidate was chosen for their expertise and diverse backgrounds.
