Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese Architect Tadao Ando's first residential development in NYC and outside Asia, 152 Elizabeth Street, has just sold its highly anticipated duplex penthouse for $35 million. The 9,000-square-feet penthouse spans three floors and features a 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath home with an astonishing amount of private outdoor space. The home also features a number of custom details including a spiral staircase of stainless steel, stone and glass that will connect the three levels; a fireplace framed by Pietra Cardosa stone and artisan plaster; and a seamless kitchen that features a sliding countertop island by the Italian brand Minimal.

As luxury condominiums go, 152 Elizabeth Street displays an unusual rigor and finesse: this is not an exercise in overindulgence, but in refined balance.

With its 32,000 square feet split between seven individual residences, Tadao Ando's floor-to-celling windowed, burnished metal, poured-in-place concrete structure also features a 55' x 99' living wall with vegetation that shifts seasonally for the ideal mix of color and texture. English Ivy, Boston Ivy, Virginia Creepers, Jasmine Clematis and climbing Hydrangeas will make up this constantly evolving green wall, a blend that was picked in part by landscape firm M. Paul Friedberg and Partners.

According to a press release, "the building’s design references four primary elements - light, sound, air, and water." Sited in Manhattan's Nolita neighborhood, the design of 152 Elizabeth Street's interiors is a collaboration between Ando and Gabellini Sheppard Associates, the latter of which is serving as the architect of record.

Tadao Ando's first ever NYC building — the brutalist condo tower project 152 Elizabeth Street — is kicking into high gear with the release of new renderings, photos of the completed sales gallery, floorplans for the first residences coming on the market, the launch of a new website for the building, and the unveiling of a video interview with the Japanese master and the project's interior designer, Michael Gabellini of Gabellini Sheppard Associates.

The first renderings are out for Tadao Ando's first project in New York City, 152 Elizabeth Street, a 32,000 sq.ft "ultra-luxury" condominium building to be constructed at the corner of Kenmare and Elizabeth Street in NoLIta in Manhattan. New York-based luxury residential development firm Sumaida + Khurana commissioned the acclaimed Japanese master architect this past March.

152 Elizabeth Street will add to the changing state of the NoLIta neighborhood, whose moniker stands for "North of Little Italy." In recent years, the neighborhood's historically industrial character has become a trendy hotspot for real estate, boutiques, restaurants, and bars.

Based on Sumaida + Khurana's renderings, the building's design will include Ando's signature elements like poured-in-place concrete, galvanized steel, and an abundant use of glass. Michael Gabellini and Kimberly Sheppard of Gabellini Sheppard Associates will work on the interiors and serve as Architect of Record.
