Grimshaw announces new foundation aimed at inclusivity, youth engagement

The new charitable arm of Grimshaw Architects has been announced by its founder at an event held last week at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

The newly-formed Grimshaw Foundation is aimed at promoting inclusivity and will serve a broader purpose to “engage and encourage young people to discover the value of creativity and the inspiration of art.”

Its genesis is the product of more than a year’s worth of coordination between Grimshaw founder Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, the firm’s leadership, and an advisory committee that includes Bartlett honorary professor Neil Pinder.

London's muscular supermarket makes history

History has been made in England, where the Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners-designed Sainsbury complex in London has become the country's first historically-recognized supermarket.

Built between 1986 and 1988, the muscular complex is designed in the High-Tech style of the time, a mode that combines technological advances in industrial materiality with the formal and structural clarity of Brutalism to create a particularly expressive variant of late modern architecture. The complex was developed by the Sainsbury grocery chain as a mixed-use project that matches a sizable supermarket with a group of row houses and apartments. Both buildings have been recognized as having Grade II significance, the country's third-highest level of significance.

Mindscraper: high-rise educational facility renderings in Sydney unveiled by Grimshaw & BVN

Parramatta, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, will be the recipient of New South Wales' first high-rise educational facility, courtesy the firms Grimshaw and BVN. Based on the "Schools-within-Schools" pedagogical model, where learning is "delivered in stages rather than via age groups," the school will educate up to 3,000 students (2,000 at the high school level, 1,000 at the primary level) in its 14 storeys, as well as the adjacent four storey curving primary school. A kit of parts furniture methodology and a flexible approach to spatial layouts will enable a far more fluid and customized learning experience for the students.

In a press release, Grimshaw partner Andrew Cortese stated that “The school buildings act as the social infrastructure for the transformation of individuals and their communities through learning, inclusivity and outreach, with wellbeing and playfulness arising out of the integration of the physical and the environmental."

Every year since 2005, the Manchester-based NOISE Festival gives thousands of aspiring architects the opportunity to get their portfolios recognized by some of the design industry's most well-known names. The nationwide Festival, which takes places online and through exclusive events, showcases undiscovered talent in over 14 categories including Architecture, Design, Illustration, Games, Fashion, Music, Fine Art, and Film.

Among the panel of noteworthy Curators who will judge the submissions, British architect Nicholas Grimshaw of Grimshaw Architects is this year's Architecture Curator. He'll be offering a one-on-one mentorship to five entrants whose submissions he rates the highest.
