Jefferson Street in the city&rsquo;s West Loop. The three-story structure, built in 1906, served as a <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/55666/nightclub" target="_blank">dance club</a> between 1977 and 1982.&nbsp;</p> <p>It was where world-renowned artist and House pioneer Frankie Knuckles served as the club&rsquo;s resident DJ, who used the space to develop and popularize the genre. The club became a safe space for Chicago&rsquo;s Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ communities. After starting life as a headquarters for Sears, Roebuck &amp; Co., the building saw its namesake tenant relocate to the suburbs. Along with the rest of downtown, it suffered other blows, including fears raised by the terrorist attacks of 2001 and the Great Recession. It&rsquo;s always bounced back. Kedzie Ave. The nearly half-acre property at the southwest corner of Kedzie and Lake street has been city-owned since the 1990s.</p></em><br /><br /><p>The development, called Hub 32, will span 78,000 square feet, stand seven stories tall, and include 63 units. It will offer apartments with rents <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/110562/affordable-housing" target="_blank">affordable</a> to those earning up to 60% of the area&rsquo;s median income. The winning proposal was designed by <a href="https://archinect.com/brooksscarpa" target="_blank">Brooks + Scarpa</a> and Studio Dwell.
