Each contestant is an early-career architect with no more than ten years out of a B.Arch or Master’s program. The 2022 winners now join a list of prestigious past awardees that includes names like Steven Holl and Meejin Yoon.</p>
<p>The theme for this year’s cycle is called “Grounding” and challenged entrants to “reflect on the substance of design’s foundations.” The League defined Grounding as a process of “making vital connections to what is already there materially, socially, and otherwise [while] contending with placeless, pervasive processes” and hoped to find an answer to a trio of questions: How do young architects tether their work and practices to the grounds upon which they design? How can designers respond to both the particularities of location and the ubiquity of global forces? And, what are intentional approaches to and...</p>

Established in 1981, and now celebrating its 40th cycle, the program aims to promote excellence among early-career architects and designers who are no more than ten years out of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program.</p>
<p>Under the 2021 competition theme of "Housekeeping," the brief asked entrants to contemplate how "stay-at-home orders have prompted many of us to see our domestic settings anew, and to consider the various ways in which we 'keep house.'"</p>

Honoring designers ten years or less out of school, the prestigious award has become highly sought after by promising young practitioners hoping to join the ranks of <a href="https://archinect.com/stevenholl" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Steven Holl</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/1492/twbta-tod-williams-billie-tsien" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Billie Tsien</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/15426060/rick-joy-architects" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Rick Joy</a> and <a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/15426060/rick-joy-architects" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Neil Denari</a>, all of whom received the award long before becoming recognizable names in the architecture world. </p>
<p>This years theme was Objective, asking entrants to respond to the prompt: How do we define or understand architecture in a post-truth world? Byrony Roberts, a 2018 League Prize recipient and founder of the New York-based design and research practice that shares her name, has decided to approach the question by building off her work that seeks to occupy, re-enact, and re-vision historically charged spaces. </p>

Every year, the Architectural League selects three previous winners for the League Prize committee, who are tasked to develop the competition theme that engages certain aspects of architectural form and practice that are most relevant to their fellow young practitioners.</p><p>The 2014 edition took an intrinsic approach with the theme <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/98624299/winners-of-the-2014-architectural-league-prize-for-young-architects-designers" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">"Overlay"</a>, which had entrants contemplate how the interactive, incremental processes inform and direct their work. North America-based Architects and designers out of school 10 years or less are invited every year to submit the best of their portfolios pertaining to the competition's theme.</p><p>The 2014-15 Young Architects + Designers Committee — which comprises of previous League Prize winners Carrie Norman, John Rhett Russo, and Jenny Sabin — selected "Authenticity" as this year's competition theme.
