The 2022 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers winners examine the foundations of design

The Architectural League of New York has announced the winners of the 41st edition of its annual Prize for Young Architects + Designers portfolio competition. Each contestant is an early-career architect with no more than ten years out of a B.Arch or Master’s program. The 2022 winners now join a list of prestigious past awardees that includes names like Steven Holl and Meejin Yoon.

The theme for this year’s cycle is called “Grounding” and challenged entrants to “reflect on the substance of design’s foundations.” The League defined Grounding as a process of “making vital connections to what is already there materially, socially, and otherwise [while] contending with placeless, pervasive processes” and hoped to find an answer to a trio of questions: How do young architects tether their work and practices to the grounds upon which they design? The 'Housekeeping' winners of the 2021 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers

The Architectural League of New York this morning unveiled the winners of its annual portfolio competition, the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. Established in 1981, and now celebrating its 40th cycle, the program aims to promote excellence among early-career architects and designers who are no more than ten years out of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program.

Under the 2021 competition theme of "Housekeeping," the brief asked entrants to contemplate how "stay-at-home orders have prompted many of us to see our domestic settings anew, and to consider the various ways in which we 'keep house.'"

This year's winners from the U.S., Mexico, and Canada are:

On Thursday, the Architectural League of New York will open up their annual exhibition featuring work from the six League Prize winners for this year. Honoring designers ten years or less out of school, the prestigious award has become highly sought after by promising young practitioners hoping to join the ranks of Steven Holl, Billie Tsien, Rick Joy and Neil Denari, all of whom received the award long before becoming recognizable names in the architecture world.

This years theme was Objective, asking entrants to respond to the prompt: How do we define or understand architecture in a post-truth world? Byrony Roberts, a 2018 League Prize recipient and founder of the New York-based design and research practice that shares her name, has decided to approach the question by building off her work that seeks to occupy, re-enact, and re-vision historically charged spaces.

Six talented winners were revealed today for the 2017 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. Established in 1981 by the Architectural League of New York, the Prize carries a legacy in that many now-well-known architects received the award at the start of their careers, like Steven Holl, Billie Tsien, Stan Allen, Shih-Fu Peng & Roisin Heneghan, J. Meejin Yoon, James Slade & Minsuk Cho, and several more.

Open to North America-based designers who are no more than 10 years out of school, the juried portfolio competition had “Support” as its 2017 theme. Support “identified a present situation in which precarious forms and precarious social arrangements exist side by side. How does one clarify the modes of support in architecture today when the discipline’s role is obscured by a tangled network in which exchanges between built form and various systems of framing, assistance, and reinforcement are constantly in flux?”

The Architectural League of New York highlights emerging design talent in their annual Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers program. First launched in 1981, the Prize carries a legacy in the contemporary architecture scene in that many now-well-known architects have received the award at the start of their careers. This year's “(im)permanence” theme explores how “time affects architecture [and alters] our expectations of permanent structures in an impermanent environment.”

Since 1981, The Architectural League of New York has showcased the latest emerging design talent in the annual Architectural League Prize. Every year, the Architectural League selects three previous winners for the League Prize committee, who are tasked to develop the competition theme that engages certain aspects of architectural form and practice that are most relevant to their fellow young practitioners.

The 2014 edition took an intrinsic approach with the theme "Overlay", which had entrants contemplate how the interactive, incremental processes inform and direct their work. Participants examined their own creative processes and presented how their developed techniques are activated over time with additional layers of meaning as they further explore architectural concepts.

The Architectural League of New York announced a new set of winners for the 2015 Architectural League Prize, considered to be one of North America's most prestigious awards for young practitioners. North America-based Architects and designers out of school 10 years or less are invited every year to submit the best of their portfolios pertaining to the competition's theme.

The 2014-15 Young Architects + Designers Committee — which comprises of previous League Prize winners Carrie Norman, John Rhett Russo, and Jenny Sabin — selected "Authenticity" as this year's competition theme. The theme sought submissions that explore how design, technology, and practice challenge authenticity within architecture, and how authenticity can be treated more as a pursuit that can continuously develop and influence a young designer's practice -- as opposed to a form of validation or as an essential quality.

The Architectural League of New York has announced the six winning young architects and designers of the 2014 "Overlay" Architectural League Prize. As one of North America's most prestigious awards for young practitioners, since 1981 the Prize recognizes provocative and exemplary work and provides a public outlet for the exchange of their ideas.
