June honorees for 2017 Curry Stone Social Design Circle are announced

The Curry Stone Design Prize just announced the latest group of designers to join the Social Design Circle. For June, the theme was “Can Design Reclaim Public Space?”.

Nine honorees join Curry Stone Social Design Circle for May 2017

Another month has begun, so that means a new set of honorees for the Curry Stone Social Design Circle have been announced!...For May, nine new members — including Rural Studio, bcWORKSHOP, and Theaster Gates' Rebuild Foundation — were selected for the theme “Can We Design Community Engagement?”.

2017 Curry Stone Design Prize announces Social Design Circle members for April

April is already here, and the Curry Stone Design Prize just announced seven new members for the Social Design Circle. Instead of announcing only one winner for the 2017 Curry Stone Design Prize, the Social Design Circle was created to honor a total of 100 individual designers and practices across the globe whose work is dedicated to addressing an array of social issues in their local communities and cities.

Based on the Social Design Circle monthly question “Can Design Prevent Disaster?”, the seven designers who were selected to join the Circle include Denver-based Build Change, the Mississippi State University's Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, and Yasmeen Lari's Heritage Foundation of Pakistan.

2017 Curry Stone Social Design Circle adds eight more designers for March

The Curry Stone Foundation announced eight new members who have joined the Social Design Circle for the month of March. Instead of announcing only one winner for the 2017 Curry Stone Design Prize, the Social Design Circle was created to honor a total of 100 individual designers and practices across the globe whose work is dedicated to addressing an array of social issues in their local communities and cities.

Throughout 2017, new members will be selected in relation to the monthly question addressed by the Social Design Circle. For March, the question was “Can Design Challenge Inequality?”.

The latest members include the Detroit Collaborative Design Center, design practice Project H, Kigali-based Active Social Architecture, and more. You can find February's honorees here.

The latest Social Design Circle honorees for the 2017 Curry Stone Design Prize

With so many designers who dedicate their work to tackling society's most pressing problems, it can be tricky to select only one winner for a top social impact award like the Curry Stone Design Prize. So for 2017, the Curry Stone Foundation decided to change things up a bit. Instead of awarding only one winner, they will announce a total of 100 Social Design Practices and/or Individuals as a member of the Social Design Circle, which acknowledges the most socially engaged practices.

Throughout the year, new members of the Social Design Circle will be announced every month in relation to the issue that the Curry Stone Design Prize is addressing for that particular month. For February, the topic is: “Is The Right To Housing Real?”

Meet the "Social Design Circle": the 100 architects awarded this year's Curry Stone Design Prize

Each year, the Curry Stone Design Prize is awarded to projects that “use design to address pressing social justice issues.” To mark the 10th anniversary of the award, the Curry Stone Foundation will award 100 projects—“the most compelling social design leaders from across the world.” Dubbed the Social Design Circle, the group was selected by a jury of Foundation members and invited international experts. Every month, a new set of winners will be introduced on the Curry Stone Foundation website, with some of them participating in a new podcast hosted by Eric Cesal and Emiliano Gandolfi. For January, the winners are Arquitectura Expandida, City Repair, Estudio Teddy Cruz + Forman, Ctrl+Z, Pico Colectivo, and Recetas Urbanas.

Studios Kabako from Congo wins 2014 Curry Stone Design Prize

Congolese performance and theater group Studios Kabako from Kisangani was announced as the 2014 Curry Stone Design Prize winner this past weekend at an awards ceremony in Brussels...Studios Kabako was established in 2001 to address the various emotions linked to the aftermath of civil war. Located in a city that is isolated geographically and culturally, the studio has provided its community a safe creative haven of dance, theater, and music through its urban interventions and cultural programs.

Studios Kabako will start a U.S. tour including in New York from October 21 to November 1, 2014, with two performances at the BRIC theater in Brooklyn.

The studio will receive a $100,000 grant prize, and were also featured in a short documentary by the Curry Stone Foundation, which you can watch entirely below.

2013 Curry Stone Design Prize Winners Announced

The Curry Stone Foundation has announced the winners of the 2013 Curry Stone Design Prize. Now in its sixth year, the annual prize celebrates humanitarian design and honors the influential work of socially engaged practitioners.

This year's Prize winners are:

Hunnarshala (Bhuj, India)
Proximity Designs (Yangon, Myanmar)
Studio TAMassociati/Emergency (Venice/Milan, Italy)

Principals from each group will attend a two-day awards ceremony at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco tonight at 7:30 p.m. PST.

The ceremony continues tomorrow Nov. 8 at the Autodesk Gallery, San Francisco, where each winner will present their work at the Design Like You Give A Damn! LIVE conference starting at 12:30 p.m. The two-day event will be live-streamed here.

2012 Curry Stone Design Prize Winners Announced

The Curry Stone Foundation has announced the winners of the 2012 Curry Stone Design Prize. In a departure from previous years, and in honor of the fifth anniversary of the Prize, five winners will share the award equally, each recognized with $25,000 for their work as social design pioneers.

An awards ceremony will take place on November 15, 2012, at Harvard Graduate School of Design, followed the next day with a forum of presentations by the 2012 winners and panel discussions with a curated group of respondents. The awards ceremony and daylong forum are free and open to the public.

2011 Curry Stone Design Grand Prize Winner Announced Sustainable Architecture in Post-Disaster Areas

The 2011 Curry Stone Design Prize Winners were announced today with an official presentation ceremony to follow on November 7th at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. [...] Hsieh Ying-Chun is the Grand Prize Winner; he will receive $100,000 from the foundation with no strings attached. Hsieh is a leading Taiwanese architect who for over a decade has deployed his talents in rural areas decimated by natural disaster.

Two additional 2011 Winner Prizes, of $10,000 each, will be awarded to Atelier d’Architecture Autogérée (AAA) and FrontlineSMS.
