Seattle-Tacoma International Airport's $400M C Concourse Expansion gets cleared for takeoff

A previously-announced plan from Woods Bagot and The Miller Hull Partnership is moving forward in Washington State after officials with the Port of Seattle Commission finally approved the $399 million C Concourse Expansion for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The expansion will add 145,530 square feet in total, including a 20,000-square-foot Alaska Airlines passenger lounge, multifaith prayer room, meditation center, nursery room, amphitheater, and a retail/dining area called The Grand Stairs, to an existing structure from 1966. The firms say their proposal “rethinks the airport experience where design creates an intuitive journey, a sense of calm, and climate consciousness.” Turner has been contracted to lead the construction.

A ‘textural and reflective building skin’ wraps the University of Washington’s new Health Sciences Education Building

A team comprising The Miller Hull Partnership, The S/L/A/M Collaborative, and Lease Crutcher Lewis has completed the new Health Sciences Education Building at the University of Washington in Seattle. Designed using a ‘culture of care’ philosophy, the scheme seeks to provide a “shared physical space that sparks innovation and creativity among students.”

Marking a new entrance to the university’s South Campus, the Health Sciences Education Building is the first project to be delivered as part of a wider campus master plan. While the existing campus prioritizes an indoor circulation system between buildings, the new scheme seeks to pull people outdoors and introduce a new network of accessible pathways, murals, and sculptural public art, as well as outdoor seating areas.

The industry's shift towards more sustainable airport design is taking on another form in Washington State after Woods Bagot revealed their designs for an ecologically-sound C Concourse Expansion at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Part of a series of capital improvements, the scope of the project entails the four-story expansion of an existing structure from 1966 and will follow the Port of Seattle’s new Sustainable Project Framework — a first for large developments under the body’s new environmentally-strident guidelines.

Miller Hull's redwood laboratory for UC Santa Cruz aims to be light on the land

Seattle-based firm The Miller Hull Partnership has designed an important new laboratory building for the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) that will have a light impact on the lush natural landscape that surrounds it.

Developed to offset the anticipated growth of UCSC’s research and instruction, the new Environmental Health & Safety Facility includes space for laboratories, waste management, storage, and administrative offices in addition to providing room for life, health, and safety resources.

Per the architects: “The site includes a small knoll and is defined by the steep ravine and mature redwood trees. The building is constructed on caissons to be light on the land and allow natural drainage and existing root systems to remain below the building. All stormwater is managed on-site with direct infiltration, and a below-grade storm drain detention structure with outfall to level spreaders distributed across the site.”

AIA/ALA Library Building Award winners bolster the value in caring for community libraries

The arched ceilings, stained glass windows, and other embellished details of some of the world's oldest university libraries or contemporary hotspots like, say, OMA's glass-clad Seattle Public Library get enough attention when it comes to the "best" library designs. While those libraries are impressive in their own regard, smaller and local community libraries are equally valuable. They can be that much-needed catalyst to revive a neighborhood or that comfortable quiet haven to get work done or temporarily escape from it all (including napping). Even as library archives become increasingly digital, libraries are evolving facilities that shouldn't be taken for granted.

In this spirit, the AIA and the American Library Association (ALA) like to recognize and promote local libraries that are considered to be exemplary models of stellar library design in their Library Building Awards program. The awards jury (listed at the bottom) selected six projects for 2015:

It is with great sadness that The Miller Hull Partnership today announces the recent passing of beloved colleague and founding partner, Robert Hull FAIA, from complications related to a stroke suffered while on sabbatical in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Robert Hull, the creative force behind the highly successful and deeply respected firm The Miller Hull Partnership, has passed away due to complications from a recent stroke. For the full release provided by the firm, click here (PDF).

As a founding partner of The Miller Hull Partnership, along with David Miller, Robert has been the creative force behind the majority of the firm’s public projects and community buildings. An award-winning design architect, Robert’s experience on a wide range of project types goes beyond meeting the program requirements. It is a search for ideal solutions.

Robert received a bachelor of architecture degree in 1968 from Washington State University, twice receiving the Student Distinction Award. From 1968 to 1972, Hull served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Afghanistan, where he designed and built the headquarters for the National Tourism Agency and helped establish a school of architecture at Kabul University.
