<p>The installation culminates a two-semester seminar led by GSAPP faculty members Laurie Hawkinson and Galia Solomonoff. </p>

Chanin School of Architecture</a> at the Cooper Union, where she has been working as an Associate Professor and Senior Associate at the Institute for Sustainable Design.</p>
<p>Kallipoliti, a noted ecological design expert known for her distinctive “immersive scholarship” approach, will also teach students as a tenured Associate Professor of Architecture, Planning and Preservation beginning in the Fall of 2024. She recently served as Head Co-Curator (with Areti Markopoulou) of the 2022 <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1764687/tallinn-architecture-biennale" target="_blank">Tallinn Architecture Biennale</a> and taught previously at <a href="https://archinect.com/rensselaerarchitecture" target="_blank">Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute</a>, <a href="https://archinect.com/syracuse" target="_blank">Syracuse University</a>, the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/16517/university-of-technology-sydney-uts" target="_blank">University of Technology Sydney</a>, and her alma mater <a href="https://archinect.com/princetonsoa" target="_blank">Princeton</a> in addition to leading the New York-based <a href="https://www.anacycle.com/" target="_blank">ANAcycle design+writing studio</a>.</p>

<p>Reporting to the Dean of <a href="https://archinect.com/columbiagsapp" target="_blank">Columbia GSAPP</a>, the role calls for an individual who will promote the GSAPP’s pedagogy and student engagement in digital fabrication. Among the responsibilities for the role are to “manage fabrication activities from small-scale massing models to full-scale building details” in the school’s Fabrication Shop, to guide and advise students on project execution in the shop, and to oversee student use of a wide variety of materials including wood, plastic, and metal.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://archinect.com/ennead" target="_blank">Ennead</a> founder <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150323425/james-stewart-polshek-academic-and-designer-of-important-public-architecture-has-passed-away-aged-92" target="_blank">passed away</a> in September and was subsequently remembered with a foundational gift of $125,000 from the firm that was meant to keep alive his enduring legacy as both an architect and educator. The new $350,000 total fund will thus be given in perpetuity to an M.Arch student in their final year of study whose work demonstrates the intellectual rigor and social concern Polshek strove for beginning with his appointment in 1972.</p>

I remember the reaction — the team was very excited about the ideas but I wasn’t computing the budget,” adding that the process of design is “always the same across scales, but this experience was very different because the scale of jewelry and the way it relates to the body is so precise.”</p></em><br /><br /><p>Andraos, who <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150264624/amale-andraos-steps-down-as-dean-of-columbia-gsapp" target="_blank">stepped down</a> as Dean of Columbia's GSAPP last May, told <em>WWD </em>that her inspiration to make jewelry for the first time came from her hometown of Beirut’s <a href="https://work.ac/work/art-deco-building/" target="_blank">Art Deco</a> tradition. Other architects like Elena Manferdini and Rossana Hu have contributed designs for the Judith Ripka brand. Pieces from Andraos’ new <a href="https://www.judithripka.com/search?q=amale" target="_blank">Ayah Collection</a> retail for between $550 and $1,995. The <a href="https://archinect.com/WORKac/people" target="_blank">WORKac</a> co-founder will now rejoin the faculty in Morningside Heights in September after a yearlong sabbatical. </p>

<p><a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/774805/weiping-wu" target="_blank">Weiping Wu</a> will now serve as GSAPP’s interim dean, while Mario Gooden is the new interim M.Arch graduate program director, replacing Andraos. </p>
<p>Wu was <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/149956391/columbia-gsapp-names-weiping-wu-director-of-urban-planning-program" target="_blank">previously</a> the director of the M.S. and Ph.D. in Urban Planning programs and brings to her new position more than twenty years of academic and professional experience. <p>The award, named after the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150039755/vincent-scully-prominent-architecture-historian-dies-at-age-97" target="_blank">late architecture historian</a>, has been given out every year since 1999 and will now honor Wilson as its 23rd recipient. Wilson joins a list of past winners that includes fellow writers Jane Jacobs and Paul Goldberger as well as other important voices like the architect Phyliss Lambert and television commentator Charlie Rose.</p>

During her seven-year tenure, she also ran her practice <a href="http://archinect.com/WORKac" target="_blank">WORKac</a> along with her husband, Dan Wood.</p>
<p>Keen on strengthening the institution's connectivity to the city and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations between GSAPP and other disciplines, Andraos' continued involvement with the university will continue. In her open letter to the community, she notes that she will continue to serve the GSAPP community as a Special Advisor to the President. "Climate Change is one of the main reasons I accepted to serve as Dean seven years ago [...] I will be able to continue to advocate for our disciplines' urgent transformations so that they may help address the challenges already...</p>

<p><a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150146921/norma-merrick-sklarek-awarded-posthumous-2019-aia-la-gold-medal" target="_blank">Sklarek was the first Black woman</a> to become a registered architect in the State of New York. After graduating from Columbia University, she worked at the Department of Works for New York City and later accepted a position at <a href="https://archinect.com/jobs/entry/150234168/senior-urban-designer" target="_blank">SOM</a> before moving to Los Angeles for a position at <a href="https://archinect.com/gruenassociates" target="_blank">Gruen Associates</a>.</p>
<p>While at Gruen, Sklarek was named the firm's Director in 1966 before transitioning to work at <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/945157/welton-becket" target="_blank">Welton Becket</a>'s firm as the organization's Vice President. Moreover, Sklarek became the first Black woman to receive a fellowship by the AIA in 1980 after which she founded Siegel, Sklarek, Diamond with Margot Siegal and Katherine Diamond.</p>

<p><a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150202690/sarah-whiting-outlines-six-point-plan-for-addressing-structural-racism-at-harvard-gsd" target="_blank">Two weeks ago</a>, following a <a href="https://notesoncredibility.cargo.site/" target="_blank">blistering letter</a> from the African American Student Union and AfricaGSD student groups at <a href="https://archinect.com/harvard" target="_blank">Harvard University</a>, Harvard Graduate School of Design <a href="https://archinect.com/features/article/150173651/deans-list-sarah-whiting-on-taking-the-helm-of-harvard-s-graduate-school-of-design" target="_blank">Dean Sarah Whiting</a> <a href="https://www.gsd.harvard.edu/2020/06/toward-a-new-gsd-a-letter-from-dean-sarah-m-whiting/" target="_blank">published a list of initiatives </a>the school would undertake in coming months to begin to address these concerns. The lab is to be led by GSAPP dean Amale Andraos. </p><p>Architect and GSAPP associate professor Hilary Sample has also been named to the school’s first endowed professorship position. <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/a9/a9c2652dfef64d7096ab283c23c0f977.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p>The <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/10116/new-museum" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">New Museum</a> announced today the appointment of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150053542/mitch-mcewen-and-marc-miller-steal-the-mic-archinect-sessions-118" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">V. Mitch McEwen</a> as Curator of IdeasCity, the museum's initiative exploring the future of cities. McEwen is the principal and cofounder of <a href="https://archinect.com/anoffice" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">A(n) Office</a>, a collaborative of design studios in Detroit and New York exploring the intersection of architecture and exhibition. </p>
<p>IdeasCity is a creative and collaborative enterprise operating through conferences, workshops, commissions, projects, and exhibitions in order to investigate key issues and proposes solutions. The Curator is a two-year appointment linked to the biennial presentation of IdeasCity in New York and is responsible for the two-year cycle leading up to this presentation. </p>
<p>As Curator of IdeasCity, <a href="https://archinect.com/mcewen" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">McEwen</a> will head up the 2018–19 cities and launch an open call for cities around the world to apply for the 2020–21 cycle. The next IdeasCity will take place in Toronto on September 15, 2018, in partnership with the Bentway. </p>

As founder of the <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/564402/office-for-political-innovation" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Office for Political of Innovation</a> and a teacher of advanced design studios at GSAPP since 2013, Jaque will succeed Associate Professor Enrique Walker, who has directed the program since 2008.</p>
<p>The three-semester Advanced Architectural Design program is for outstanding students who already have a bachelor's or M.Arch degree, and is best known for offering students a framework through which they can explore professional and academic concerns. In directing the program, Jaque aims to further develop architecture's role as a critical practice that is based on constructive debate of ideas and innovative experimentation.</p>

The introduction of the new program will set the standard for doctoral level education, provide intellectual leadership by training future generations of preservation scholars, and expand the discipline’s range.</p>

The resulting work will form a show, "Stagecraft: Models and Photos," that opens at the GSAPP on February 9th.</p><p><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/yc/ycn9g7oo066uysq7.jpg"></p><p><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/rb/rbgxj06ewdwwouoj.jpg"></p><p>Featuring photographs of models of structures such as Le Corbusier's Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux, Norman Foster's Renault Distribution Center, and Peter Zumthor's Saint Benedict Chapel among others, the photographs avoid the atmosphere of your typical two-in-the-morning-on-a-work-day professional studio snaps, instead investing each of these models with unusual drama.</p><p><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/ve/veqw91qx7uq5j5tl.jpg"></p><p>Because the models and the photographer are so removed from the original architectural design process, the work is necessarily interpretive. Historical references to bolster your design proposal? The Columbia GSAPP Visual Resources Collection (VRC) and the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library host an online collection of 20,000 images of 20th century architectural projects. Underway for nearly two years now, the project includes drawings, images and photographs, primarily of modernist projects spanning from 1871 to 2013.</p><p>Unbuilt projects, like the Chicago Tribune Tower and the Lenin Library, are showcase alongside a collection of built projects. In total, the archive includes 1,000 projects from 55 countries. The project was curated by <a href="http://archinect.com/ayeshaghosh" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ayesha Ghosh</a>, who was assisted by Carsten Rodin and James Brillon.</p><p>The archive has a Plans and Sections project alongside collections of digital images, 35mm slides, and lantern slide formats.
