Curator Tanja Hwang joins MoMA's Department of Architecture and Design

New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has announced the addition of curator Tanja Hwang to its Department of Architecture and Design.

Effective today, January 9, Hwang will join the museum and begin working in a capacity that entails managing the design collection, expanding the department’s acquisitions program, organizing exhibitions, managing exhibition catalogs and other publications, as well as “cultivating relationships within the Museum and in the design community.”

Hwang begins at the museum after serving as one of the first curatorial staffers at Hong Kong’s Herzog & de Meuron-designed M+ museum and having completed her academic training at the Freie Universität Berlin, according to a LinkedIn profile.

French architect, historian, and academic Jean-Louis Cohen passes away at 74

Jean-Louis Cohen, a renowned architectural historian, critic, educator, and curator, has sadly passed away in the Ardennes after suffering an allergic reaction from a bee sting, according to reports published this week in France and the United States.

As the Sheldon H. Solow Chair of Architectural History at the New York University Institute of Fine Arts and former Penelope Visiting Professor in Architectural History at the University of Sydney, Cohen was a beloved figure remembered by many one of his publishers, like Artforum, as being a “knowledgeable interlocutor, author, and professor, and a warm and generous mentor.”

Cohen was born in France in 1949 and began a successful career in academia following the completion of his doctoral studies and a thirteen-year tenure as the director of architectural research for France’s Ministry of Housing. MVRDV’s Winy Maas to curate biennale on threatened Van Gogh landscapes

MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas has been selected as curator for the Van Gogh Homeland Biennale. Set to launch in 2025, the event will draw attention to the Brabant landscapes in the Netherlands which featured in many Vincent Van Gogh paintings more than a hundred years ago and are now under threat from climate change.

The Biennale is part of a broader collaboration between Midpoint Brabant, MVRDV, and the Van Gogh Homeland Foundation, which aims to raise public awareness of the challenges faced by the Dutch landscape, where the number of flood events is increasing, and tensions are rising between farmers, cities, industries, and nature lovers over land use.

The team hopes that a blend of architecture, landscape design, sustainability, and leisure backgrounds will “show in an attractive and accessible way how the landscape that inspired Vincent van Gogh 150 years ago can be made more sustainable and greener in the future.”

A legal smear campaign has ousted a museum director over the inclusion of a pro-Palestinian statement in an exhibition examining the work of Forensic Architecture at the University of Manchester.

Artnet News is reporting the forced resignation of Alistair Hudson following a concerted lobbying effort on the part of several prominent local barristers who form the group U.K. Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI).

Hudson has been the director of the university’s Whitworth Art Gallery since 2017 and became the target of the pro-Israel group’s effort after allowing the statement as part of a show called Cloud Studies that focused in part on the activist group’s study of poor air quality and human rights in areas that included the occupied territories as well as Louisiana and Beirut.

Today the Board of La Biennale di Venezia announced the appointment of Lesley Lokko as its curator for the 2023 Venice Biennale Architecture Exhibition.

Lokko is an esteemed architectural leader, best-selling novelist, and academic advocate whose work within and outside architecture circles has proven her a formidable force for change. Pratt Institute's Julia van den Hout joins Art Omi as Curator and Program Director

The Pratt Institute’s Julia van den Hout has been appointed Architecture Curator and Program Director of upstate New York sculpture center Art Omi.

A dual SVA and NYU alumna, van den Hout is the founder of Orginal Copy and also the co-founder and editor of CLOG, an active online forum with 13 published digital issues. She had previously served as Press Director at Steven Holl Architects until 2014 and has been a visiting professor at Pratt since 2019.

At Omi, van den Hout will be responsible for the curation of the Sculpture & Architecture Park and indoor exhibitions program in addition to overseeing the institution’s two-week Art Omi: Architecture Residency program, which is still currently accepting applications for the upcoming Summer 2022 cycle. The Rotterdam-based institute of architecture, design, and culture Het Nieuwe Instituut ("The New Institute") announces Aric Chen as its new General and Artistic Director. Currently, Chen is based in Shanghai as the professor and founding Director of the Curatorial Lab at the College of Design & Innovation at Tongji University. He will be moving to Rotterdam to begin his position full-time in September 2021 but will assume his new role remotely starting in May.

Aric Chen was born and raised in Chicago, IL before his curatorial practices took him around the globe. He is currently based in Shanghai, CN. The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam has announced the chief curator of its next edition: Derk Loorbach is the director of the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT) and professor of Socioeconomic Transitions at the Erasmus University Rotterdam's Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Titled SHOCK AND ROLL, the 10th IABR will open in the fall of 2022 and commence a new series of biennales focusing on the "urgent need to put into design practice the all-embracing change to which science incites us, which the Paris climate objectives call for, to which the global community committed itself in the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and with which the reality of the climate crisis confronts us every single day."

The successful candidate will be tasked with overseeing the museum’s vast collection of indigenous American artifacts, including the Charles and Valerie Diker Collection of more than 116 objects hailing from 50 different Native American cultures, from the 2nd century to the early 20th century. In a recent job listing on the American Alliance of Museums website, The Met in NYC appears to be hiring its first full-time Native North American art curator to lead the museum's new Native Arts program, artnet News reported earlier this month. Hiring the new curator is part of the museum's efforts to revamp its approach to Native American art and culture.

The job listing (which has since been removed) states that the chosen candidate would be in charge of establishing “‘demonstrable connections with descendent communities’ and the ability to ‘develop robust collaborations and partnerships with Indigenous community members,’” Smithsonian.com reports.

José Esparza Chong Cuy has been appointed Executive Director and Chief Curator of Storefront for Art and Architecture. The Mexican architect, curator and writer will be taking over for Eva Franch i Gilabert, who was announced as the new director of the Architectural Association in London back in March.

Esparza Chong Cuy will assume the position beginning November 1st, 2018. He comes via the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA), where he has served as the Pamela Alper Associate Curator since 2016. Prior to Chicago, his impressive CV includes stints at the Museo Jumex in Mexico, the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, the New Museum in New York, and some time spent at the Storefront as well as a Curatorial Associate.

The New Museum announced today the appointment of V. Mitch McEwen as Curator of IdeasCity, the museum's initiative exploring the future of cities. McEwen is the principal and cofounder of A(n) Office, a collaborative of design studios in Detroit and New York exploring the intersection of architecture and exhibition.

IdeasCity is a creative and collaborative enterprise operating through conferences, workshops, commissions, projects, and exhibitions in order to investigate key issues and proposes solutions. The Curator is a two-year appointment linked to the biennial presentation of IdeasCity in New York and is responsible for the two-year cycle leading up to this presentation.

Farrell and McNamara’s theme is “Freespace”, which they say describes “a generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity at the core of architecture’s agenda”. Chicago-based curator and writer Yesomi Umolu has been appointed as the artistic director of the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial, which will make its return on September 19, 2019 through January 5, 2020. After evaluating candidates from around the world and from various disciplines, the CAB board members and previous Artistic Directors selected Umolu.

Having strong roots in Chicago, Umolu has a background in architectural design and curatorial studies, and she focuses her work on global contemporary art and spatial practices. She is currently the Exhibitions Curator at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago. She is also a visiting lecturer, critic, and has spoken at various international institutions.

Some of her recent exhibitions explore the politics of the built environment, like the “Kapwani Kiwanga: The sum and its parts”, “The Land Grant: Forest Law”, and “The Museum of Non Participation: The New Deal”.

Sylvia Lavin appointed as Professor of Architecture at Princeton University

Princeton University School of Architecture announced today that Sylvia Lavin will be joining their faculty effective July 1, 2018. Lavin is currently a Professor in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA, where she was Chairperson from 1996 to 2006 and the Director of the Critical Studies M.A. and Ph.D. program from 2007 to 2017.

Lavin received her Ph.D. from the Department of Art and Archaeology at Columbia University in 1990 after having received fellowships from the Getty Center, the Kress Foundation, and the Social Science Research Council. Her most recent books include, Kissing Architecture, published by Princeton University Press in 2011 and Flash in the Pan, an AA publication from 2015.

The most radical art space to launch in Paris in decades will open next spring in a five-storey, 19th-century building in the Marais district. The Fondation d’Entreprise Galeries Lafayette, run by the eponymous French retail chain, commissioned Rem Koolhaas and his OMA company to renovate the historic building at 9 rue du Platre.

OMA has placed a glass and steel exhibition tower in the building’s courtyard, which operates as a ‘curatorial machine’,” according to a project statement. This tower incorporates four mobile platforms that move in and out of sight, allowing 49 different spatial configurations. As the floors move, galleries of varying sizes with different ceiling heights are created. In the basement, artists will make works in a production workshop.

Aric Chen of M+ receives top Design Curator Award at the inaugural Design Prize in Milan

Launched this year, The Design Prize is an annual awards program, organised by the media outlets designboom and Abitare under the auspices of the City of Milan.

Aric Chen, a lead curator for Design and Architecture at one of the world's largest visual art museum, M+ in Hong Kong has been named the winner in the Design Curator and Design Critic category. Since joining M+ in 2012, Chen has led the museum’s efforts in building its design and architecture collection, which currently includes approximately 3,000 works out of a total of more than 6,000. The museum building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is scheduled to open in 2019.

The Board of the Venice Architecture Biennale appointed Grafton Architects co-founders Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara yesterday as the curators of the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, which will take place May 26 to November 25 in 2018.

The Venice Biennale is familiar ground to Farrell and McNamara, who participated in the Biennale in 2002 and won the Silver Lion in 2012, where they presented their project for the UTEC campus in Lima — the winner of the inaugural RIBA International Prize. Grafton Architects was represented at the 2016 Biennale under the title, “The Physics of Culture”.

SCI-Arc launches "MEAT," a curatorial summer program

In the short time since Hernan Diaz Alonso assumed directorship of SCI-Arc, the prestigious architecture institute has already seen quite a few changes. Adding to the roster of programs at the newly-founded EDGE, a graduate center focusing on something like the "edges" of the rapidly-expanding discipline, SCI-Arc has just announced "MEAT", or "Making Exhibitions in Architecture Today", a graduate-level summer program for aspiring architecture curators.

Helmed by the respected theorist (and UCLA faculty member) Sylvia Lavin, MEAT intends to introduce summer students to the "intellectual and curatorial potentials in architectural exhibition practices".

The program will comprise a three and a half week course following an "intensive schedule of seminars and excursions," notably to local museums, galleries, and studios. Guest lecturers will include Sarah Herda of the Graham Foundation, Paola Antonelli from MoMA, and Giovanna Borasi from the Canadian Centre for Architecture.

The new Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon recently selected architect and writer Pedro Gadanho as its first Artistic Director. Gadanho is leaving his post as a curator in MoMA's Department of Architecture and Design, which he's held since 2012 – a relatively quick departure for such a high-status role. In a press release issued today, the Istanbul Design Biennial announced that powerhouse architectural historians, theorists and educators Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley will curate the 3rd Biennial, taking place in 2016. Both are based in New York City (and happen to be married) – Colomina teaches and is a curator at Princeton University, and Wigley recently stepped down from his deanship at Columbia University's GSAPP.

The Biennial's agenda is to bring together a diversity of ideas and people within the design community to an international forum, and consider global issues from a design-minded perspective. Colomina and Wigley will announce the Biennial's "conceptual framework" in December 2015.

Galilee's title is one of two new Museum curatorial positions endowed by and named after the Museum's Chairman, Daniel Brodsky, and his wife Estrellita B. Brodsky, an art historian and specialist in Latin American Art.

Galilee will begin work at the Museum this spring.
