California State Universities announce plans for an all-online fall semester

As universities across the country begin to plan for an unpredictable fall semester, the California State University (CSU) system has made the decision to preemptively schedule its fall semester courses online.

The New York Times reports that the school system, which operates 23 campuses and educates a student population of 480,000, is opting for the approach out of an abundance of caution and as fears of a so-called "second wave" of coronavirus infections increases while states begin to lift stay-at-home ordinances.

Examining history and theory education at Los Angeles’s schools of architecture

Please join Archinect and the Architecture + Design Museum on Saturday, December 7th at 2pm for History + Theory Education in LA's Schools of Architecture, a panel discussion investigating the current and future state of historical and theoretical approaches to architectural education. The panel discussion is presented in conjunction with The Los Angeles Schools exhibition, for which Archinect is serving as media partner.

As climate collapse, equity-based social movements, and technological advances destabilize and recalibrate traditional architectural practice, how is architectural thinking coping?

On this episode of Archinect Sessions we’re sharing the recording of a panel discussion I moderated last weekend at the A+D Museum, as part of the current exhibition The Los Angeles Schools. The panel brought together five students and three faculty members representing student-led publications from LA’s architecture programs. Rayne Laborde and Phoebe Webster represented UCLA's POOL; Marcelyn Gow represented SCI-Arc’s Offramp; Richard Mapes, Corie Yaguchi and Irvin Shaifa represented SCI-Arc's Underscore; Alvin Huang represented USC’s Supertall; and Stephen Phillips, Cal Poly LA Metro’s Director, represented their program’s hardcover publication LA Ten.

A deeper look at the institutions behind The Los Angeles Schools exhibition

Los Angeles has long been a cradle for innovative architectural thinking. As a result, the Los Angeles area is not only filled with many architecturally significant sites, but is also home to some of the world's leading architectural institutions. This weekend, four of the region's schools of architecture will be participating in the Architecture and Design (A+D) museum's The Los Angeles Schools exhibition, a showcase of institutional pedagogies and the student work those ideas generate.

The exhibition aims to showcase Los Angeles's position as a pivotal node for architectural research, production, and exploration both in United States and internationally, as well.

Archinect has compiled statistics on the four participating schools and their respective academic programs to highlight the important role each plays in bolstering the region's reputation as a design-forward metropolis.

L.A.'s architecture schools are the focus in a forthcoming exhibition at A+D Museum

The Architecture and Design (A+D) museum in Los Angeles has announced The Los Angeles Schools, a forthcoming exhibition that highlights the student work and pedagogical approaches of some of Los Angeles’s leading architecture programs.

The exhibition surveys some of the cutting-edge architectural thinking taking place at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), University of Southern California, Cal Poly LA Metro, and UCLA Architecture and Urban Design, and seeks to position Los Angeles as “a center for architectural production, investigation, and research charged with producing tomorrow’s leaders in the world of architecture and design,” according to a press release.

MAD founder Ma Yansong celebrates opening of LA office with lecture in Hollywood

Co-presented by Hennessey + Ingalls, the A+D Museum and the Cal Poly LA Metro Program, Ma Yansong lectured last night on MAD's history and the trials of Chinese architecture. Now with offices in Los Angeles and Beijing, MAD is poised to fulfill the high expectations bestowed on it as a Chinese firm cultivating a style unique from any western exceptionalism, while also building outside of Asia. Yansong's talk took place at Space 15 Twenty in Hollywood -- a public, outdoor courtyard surrounded by hip storefronts and eateries. Free to people wandering through, the venue was refreshingly informal for an event type usually restricted to hallowed academic halls.

Yansong presented works from throughout MAD's existence, focusing particularly on each project's context and relationship to nature -- whether or not it was ever built.
