Brooks + Scarpa completes vibrant park pavilion and sport complex in South Florida

Brooks + Scarpa has shared photos of its recently completed design for the Youth Sports Complex in Pompano Beach, Florida.

The concept of the 10-acre project centers around The Field House, an enclosed 4,100-square-foot pavilion structure at the center of the park. Approached from the north elevation at Northeast 10th Street, visitors will be able to clearly view the signage that's encased in its yellow-painted metal lattice screens.

Simple, cost-efficient board-formed concrete walls create the structure’s “playful and sculptural” outer facade. A wraparound porch is then formed inside the shell, capped by a sloping roofline that funnels water from its scupper into the aquifer of the rain garden below.

Peach Fuzz is the 2024 Pantone Color of the Year

Pantone has selected "Peach Fuzz" as its official Color of the Year for 2024. Twelve months after announcing "Viva Magenta" as its selection for 2023, the New Jersey-based company continued with the springtime palette with a light and bright color they claim will have an impact on an increasingly turbulent and divisive world.

"In seeking a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a color radiant with warmth and modern elegance," the Pantone Color Institute’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman describes. "A shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless."

A staple of many modern-day cosmetics boutiques, coffee shops, startup offices, and other retail spaces has also become a runway favorite of late, according to CNN. MVRDV completes colorful HAUS 1 office conversion in Berlin

MVRDV has completed work on a vibrant new conversion project in Berlin called HAUS 1 that reworked an aging office building from 1997 into a new hub for innovation and community.

Other than the eye-catching canary color finish, the project is visually dominated by an extended grand external staircase. A new terraced timber pavilion space is enacted on the rooftop, completed by an arrangement of native plants and constructed using a palette of bio-based materials. Inside, floorplans are altered to maximize flexibility. Other important aspects of the design include low-temperature underfloor heating and a rainwater harvesting system that will help the building to function sustainably year-round.

Viva Magenta is Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2023

Pantone has announced Viva Magenta as its Color of the Year for 2023, ending a (mostly) blue-gray-hued streak that’s predominated for the past three years.

Offering a “new signal of strength” that’s useful for “writing a new narrative,” the eye-catching shade of red can set the tone for individuals apparently possessing a rebellious spirit and joie de vivre while encouraging a wide range of things, including experimentation, individuality, and inclusiveness.

Pantone’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman said: “In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”

Heavyweight, humanist, intellectual hero, and pioneer of the high-tech style. Such are the remembrances of a beloved architectural icon seen in the outpouring of tributes circulating on social media following the death of Richard Rogers in London over the weekend.

Reminiscent of the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, Rogers was a genius in the application of color theory to his creative work. His breakthrough Pompidou Center is considered a landmark in part for its incorporation of symbolic color coding as signifiers of the building’s mechanical services and can trace its inspiration to early projects such as the unbuilt Zip-Up House and family home in Wimbledon.

Pantone’s much-heralded Color of the Year has been announced, with “Very Peri” taking the top billing as pastels continue to dominate the annual list.

The lilac-esque shade of blue is supposedly embiotic of the shifts in cultural attitudes and individual expression as we move towards a more progressive and open-minded society.

Pantone identified the color as “Displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit,” adding that the “inquisitive and intriguing Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives. More and more, amid the pastels and the gold-leaf embellishments, you see a striking juxtaposition: 125-year-old houses painted in the tones of a cold war-era nuclear warhead or a dormant cinder cone. In neighborhoods like the Mission and the Haight, this phenomenon reads to some residents as an erasure of the Latino community or of the lingering counterculture.

A design world arms race to make the blackest black has intensified this week after an artist revealed his latest creation called Blink.

Stuart Semple created the ink over a period of two years after launching a precursor called Black 3.0 in 2019. The artist had been reacting to the controversy surrounding Anish Kapoor’s being given exclusive rights to Vantablack, the pigment that was initially developed for use on satellites owing to its high absorption rate.

Semple began experimenting with black after a farcical attempt to engineer a purer pink in parody of Kapoor. A more serious effort took shape after the 2019 release and following a beta testing period in which he assembled a team of other artists and designers to provide feedback for the darker and more opaque shade.

What does an all-white room signify to you? For me, it’s a fraught mix of sanitarium/hospital, a sort of blank slate for digital reality a la The Matrix, and a vaguely heavenly connotation—like something from a film in which Morgan Freeman plays God. Now, what if we adorn said room with all-white upscale bathroom fixtures? What if we bedeck it from tip to toe with Victoria & Albert washbasins, Duravit vanities, Geberit U.S.A. flush plates, and Infinity Drains? How would that make you feel?

Researchers create ultra-white paint that could cool buildings

Scientists in the US have developed a paint significantly "whiter than the whitest paint currently available". Tests carried out by researchers at Purdue University on their "ultra-white" paint showed it reflected more than 98% of sunlight. That suggests, the scientists say, that it could help save energy and fight climate change.

The paint's whiteness opens up a range of cooling features that, applied at an industrial scale, could limit the built environment's contributing effect to global warming and its dependency on traditional air conditioning.

"If you were to use this paint to cover a roof area of about 1,000 square feet, we estimate that you could get a cooling power of 10 kilowatts. That’s more powerful than the central air conditioners used by most houses," predicts Xiulin Ruan, the Purdue professor of mechanical engineering, who led the research.

The announcement of the Pantone Color of the Year seems to cause the media to stir every year. While everyone jumps on the hype showcasing how "excited" they are, how do color trends impact architects?

Don't get me wrong; I love seeing the use of color in projects. The study of color theory is valuable and impacts a project tremendously. Verner Panton and Josef Albers are probably two of the most recognizable color aficionados in design, amongst others, but do these yearly trends make their way into built projects?

While the public may "welcome" the 2021 color of the year (PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating), its announcement is more of a reminder that color trends don't have much weight unless they're used and applied.

Yinka Ilori on design and design inclusivity

Walking into Yinka Ilori’s west London studio from the drab suburban business park outside is to enter an oasis. Floor-to-ceiling shelving is lined with the brightly coloured, upcycled chairs, painted or upholstered in West African fabrics, that made Ilori’s name when he first left college. [...] “My work is very much about inclusivity and how people enjoy design,” says the 33-year-old.

Emerging British-Nigerian designer Yinka Ilori in conversation with The Guardian's Observer Design magazine.

Asked about his growing courage to also take on architectural-scale projects, such as his collaboration with architects Pricegore on the 2019 Dulwich Pavilion The Colour Palace, Ilori responds: "Architecture and design should be for everyone, not just one group. Sometimes it’s not as inclusive as it should be."

Color plays an important role in architecture. Whether it's to create a mood or embellish on an interior's detail colors helps architects and designers convey many things, some have made entire careers out of color and its uses. Just ask Verner Panton, Josef Albers, or Paul Klee, color and color theory is a specialization that shouldn't be overlooked.

The Pantone Color Institute, the world leader in global color research and trends, has announced the Pantone Color of the Year for 2020. PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue will is the color many have been praising since Pantone made the announcement.

The city of London is hit with color thanks to designer Yinka Ilori

This past June, London celebrated its annual London Festival of Architecture. The festival showcases exhibitions, installations, workshops, and other events highlighting architecture and design in the city.

This year, London-based designer Yinka Ilori created two projects that filled the city streets with life through color. First is the multicolored pavilion, "The Colour Palace," built in collaboration with London-based architecture firm Pricegore. Located outside the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the design was inspired by the markets of Balogun in Lagos, Nigeria. Illori used the colorful African textiles found hanging throughout the markets as inspiration for the pavilion.

Perhaps the dream shoe for any Bauhaus enthusiast looking to stay "fresh," Nike has released their Nike Air Max 270 React with a lead colorway paying homage to the iconic Bauhaus school. The vibrant color palette would make any color theorist jump with excitement. The blue, red, yellow, and turquoise color accents are synonymous with the school — sure to catch the attention of any architecture or sneaker enthusiast.

Nike shares in their June news announcement, "The initial release of the Nike Air Max 270 React share a consistent foundation in art and design history. Each colorway translates a specific artistic style or movement in its blocking and hues. The lead launch colorway, for example, heralds the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus's founding by recalling the school’s formal studies of asymmetrical balance." Nike notes the shoe will have other color options inspired by "mid-century color blocking" and "San Francisco psychedelia."

Adam Nathaniel Furman's Tokyo apartment renovation contains a library of materials

Orange, mango, strawberry, lime. If an apartment could be said to be bursting with fruit flavor it would be this three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in Tokyo’s Nagatacho district, renovated by Adam Nathaniel Furman, a British architectural designer, for a pair of very adventurous clients over the past two years.

Adam Nathaniel Furman has recently completed a spectacular new renovation for an adventurous couple's apartment in Tokyo’s Nagatacho district.

The renovation is significant for its novel use of colors, textures and patterns. According to Alexandra Lange, "many of the client-architect discussions devolved into conversations about senses, tastes and food, and Mr. Furman spent days with the couple shopping for materials." The apartment boldly applies synthetic materials, including vinyl and melamine, that compliment shaped plywood and other natural elements.

UNStudio is known for their groundbreaking work in solution driven designs relating to the ever-changing urban environment. Climate is changing, which leaves architects and designers taking steps towards designing buildings and structures that can accommodate to the overheated urban environment. Intense heating and other weather conditions like rain and dust generate a lot of stress and strain on the exteriors of many buildings. Thirty to forty years ago, these types of conditions were not necessarily a priority. However, with the environmental conditions of today firms like UNStudio are taking a different approach to future building design. According to the studio's principal and founder Ben van Berkel, "designing with the future in mind also means buildings last longer in the face of environmental change. That they are more resilient to change and they endure environmental strain."

Designed specifically for the park, New York-based architecture and design office Hou de Sosa creates a mesmerizing installation that provides a kaleidoscope effect. With the design process occurring in three phases, the duo uses a single box celluated by prisms starting from a center point to mimic the contextual features of the area.
