Architecture firms around the globe continue to exercise their efforts in providing scholarship opportunities to students and emerging designers looking to pursue careers in architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and other adjacent professions.

This is the case for international architecture firm Gensler, which has announced recipients of this year's scholarship cycle. The 2022 Gensler Scholarships awarded include the Rising Black Designers Scholarship, the Brinkmann Scholarship, and a set of micro-scholarships presented to ten students.

The 2022 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers winners examine the foundations of design

The Architectural League of New York has announced the winners of the 41st edition of its annual Prize for Young Architects + Designers portfolio competition. Each contestant is an early-career architect with no more than ten years out of a B.Arch or Master’s program. The 2022 winners now join a list of prestigious past awardees that includes names like Steven Holl and Meejin Yoon.

The theme for this year’s cycle is called “Grounding” and challenged entrants to “reflect on the substance of design’s foundations.” The League defined Grounding as a process of “making vital connections to what is already there materially, socially, and otherwise [while] contending with placeless, pervasive processes” and hoped to find an answer to a trio of questions: How do young architects tether their work and practices to the grounds upon which they design? The Architectural League of New York has named its annual group of Emerging Voices. The competition is one of the most coveted and unique in the field of architecture and design, recognizing work that constitutes the vanguard of young professionals based in North America.

Every year since 1982, the organization has selected eight emerging practices based on a competitive portfolio competition. Past winners have included luminaries like Steven Holl, Enrique Norten, and Tatiana Bilbao. Carles Enrich Studio wins the AR Emerging Architecture Awards 2020 for their dynamic approach to heritage

The Architectural Review has announced Carles Enrich Studio as the winner of the AR Emerging Architecture Awards 2020. The Barcelona-based practice was chosen from a shortlist of 16 young architects and designers around the world recognized as “the architectural stars of tomorrow.”

Founded in 2013, Carles Enrich Studio focuses on interventions in Catalonia’s historical landscapes. Their celebrated works include the Merola Tower in Puig-reig, which saw a 13th-century stone tower reactivated by a contemporary timber structure. The firm’s previous accolades include nominations for the EU Mies Award in 2017 and 2019 and participation in the 2012 and 2016 Venice Biennale.

The 16 shortlisted firms for the 2020 awards were published in October of last year.

The Architectural League of New York this morning unveiled the winners of its annual portfolio competition, the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. Established in 1981, and now celebrating its 40th cycle, the program aims to promote excellence among early-career architects and designers who are no more than ten years out of a bachelor’s or master’s degree program.

Under the 2021 competition theme of "Housekeeping," the brief asked entrants to contemplate how "stay-at-home orders have prompted many of us to see our domestic settings anew, and to consider the various ways in which we 'keep house.'"

The Architectural League of New York's Emerging Voices awards highlights the work of emerging practices through its portfolio competition. Since 1982, the awards have helped launch the careers of more than 200 North America-based architects. Past winners include Toshiko Mori, Tatiana Bilbao, Enrique Norten, Casper Mork-Ulnes, Miriam Peterson, Nathan Rich, Olalekan Jeyifous, Mimi Hoang, Rosalyn Shieh, and many others.

The invite-only, two-stage review from approximately 50 entrants brings together these best of the best in design. "The award spotlights individuals and firms based in the United States, Canada, and Mexico with distinct design voices and the potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urbanism. The jury reviews significant bodies of realized work and considers accomplishments within the design and academic communities as well as the public realm."

Architectural Review announces 16 shortlisted practices for this year's 2020 AR Emerging Architecture awards. Since 1999 the awards program focuses on creating a platform that highlights the work of young architects and designers. For this year's edition the shortlist recognizes emerging practices from all over the world.

Thanks to an esteemed panel of jury members, this year's judging was conducted remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Each practice led virtual presentations to a jury of previous AR Emerging Architecture finalists like Dorte Mandrup, Manuel Aires Mateus, and Sameep Padora. While the final judging and will take place during the WAFVirtual, below is a list of the shortlisted practices and selected projects.

Archinect chats with Daniel Fernández Pascual, the 2020 Wheelwright Prize Winner

This year the Harvard University Graduate School of Design has awarded its coveted Wheelwright Prize to Daniel Fernández Pascual. The $100,000 fellowship funds travel-based research to support and investigate contemporary architecture and design.

The Wheelwright Prize was established in 1935 and originally intended for Harvard GSD alumni but has since become an open international competition supporting an emphasis on "globally-minded research."

Fernández Pascual won the 2020 Prize for his research proposal: Being Shellfish: The Architecture of Intertidal Cohabitation. The Architectural League announces the 2020 Emerging Voices

Being named an Emerging Voice is considered a big honor. Since 1982, The Architectural League of New York's reputable portfolio competition has helped launch the careers of over 250 North America-based architects, many whose names are now well known, like Steven Holl, Morphosis, Toshiko Mori, Deborah Berke, Jeanne Gang, Tatiana Bilbao, Enrique Norten, Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, and many more.

The two-stage, invite-only competition distinguishes eight mid-career practices and individuals who not only have distinct design voices, but also demonstrate strong potential to influence the disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urbanism.

The 2019 AR Emerging Architecture Award goes to Comunal Taller de Arquitectura of Mexico

With 16 architects announced as shortlist winners back in October, the Architectural Review has announced Comunal Taller de Arquitectura as the winner of Architectural Review's 2019 Emerging Architecture Award.

The Mexico-based architecture firm was applauded for a project submission that focused on their community-driven work within the rural village of Tepetzintán in Mexico. According to this year's AR judging panel, the practice was recognized for its "fight against a political lobby that is vastly supportive of replicable, commercial housing development over housing seen as a human right."

Finalists announced for 2019 MoMA/PS1 Young Architects Program

MoMA PS1 has announced the five finalists who will compete for the 2019 edition of its annual Young Architects Program. Challenging emerging architectural talent to develop creative proposals for a temporary summer outdoor installation, the highly coveted commission serves as a stage and shelter for the museum's seasonal Warm Up concert series. Architects are also asked to address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling, with their installation.

To choose an architectural studio, over 100 nominators from across North America are asked to submit a young office for consideration. Previous talent tapped by the program has included SHoP Architects, Andrés Jaque/Office for Political Innovation, The Living/David Benjamin and SO-IL.

By collapsing the roles of architect, developer and interior designer, they make spaces with an unparalleled intimacy and a highly refined sense of place. “When we choose a project, it’s not just a project,” says Chan Eayrs. “It’s where we choose to spend two to three years of our life, every day, touching and feeling it, living it.”

The New York Times profiles British architect couple Zoe Chan Eayrs and Merlin Eayrs, whose highly dedicated design process — in which they live in whatever project they are currently renovating through completion — has resulted in a refreshing portfolio of unique living spaces that “feel as soulful as they do sophisticated”, The New York Times writes.

On Thursday, the Architectural League of New York will open up their annual exhibition featuring work from the six League Prize winners for this year. Honoring designers ten years or less out of school, the prestigious award has become highly sought after by promising young practitioners hoping to join the ranks of Steven Holl, Billie Tsien, Rick Joy and Neil Denari, all of whom received the award long before becoming recognizable names in the architecture world.

This years theme was Objective, asking entrants to respond to the prompt: How do we define or understand architecture in a post-truth world? Byrony Roberts, a 2018 League Prize recipient and founder of the New York-based design and research practice that shares her name, has decided to approach the question by building off her work that seeks to occupy, re-enact, and re-vision historically charged spaces.

[...] But the chances have shrunk of a Mackintosh, a Pompidou or a Golden Lane emerging, or of changing the direction of architecture. Competitions have become managerialised, encased in regulation, procedure and risk-avoidance, and varnished in PR.

Five architects win 2017 MacDowell Colony Fellowship

For many artists, getting away from it all is necessary in the creative process. The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire offers this remote environment in their arts fellowship, which attracts hundreds of applications from artists working in architecture to non-fiction writing to music composition. Out of 706 applications for the summer fellowship, 69 artists representing seven disciplines — including five up-and-coming architects — were awarded.

RAMSA awards 2017 Travel Fellowship to Kyle Schumann

Robert A.M. Stern Architects announced last week that they granted their 2017 RAMSA Traveling Fellowship to Kyle Schumann, a master's candidate at the Princeton University School of Architecture, for his submission “Alpine Modernism: Sensitive Identities and Regional Placemaking”.

The prize will fund Schumann's travels to Austria, Slovenia, and Italy, where he will study the work of architects Jože Plečnik, Otto Wagner, Edoardo Gellner, and Edvard Ravnikar. He argues in his submission that these specific architects engaged with “complex and often conflicting cultural histories, coupled with the challenging geography and climate of the Alpine region,” and therefore “necessitated an architecture intricately sensitive to material, cultural, and programmatic contexts.”

The jury — RAMSA Partners Melissa DelVecchio, Daniel Lobitz, and Grant F. Marani — was “intrigued” by Schumann's clear intent “to investigate Alpine architecture that mediates modernism and regional tradition,” they wrote. ...

DeFlatKleiburg wins 2017 Mies van der Rohe Award, MSA/V+ named 2017 Emerging Architect recipient

Two housing projects won big today in the 2017 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award competition. Out of five finalists, DeFlatKleiburg in Amsterdam by NL Architects and XVW architectuur won the main Mies van der Rohe Award. The 2017 Emerging Architect prize went to Brussels-based practice MSA/V+ for the NAVEZ social housing project.

DeFlatKleiburg is the first renovation project of an existing building to receive the main prize. The colossal megablock is 11 stories tall and 400 meters long, and comprises 500 customizable apartments. First built in the 1960s as part of city planner Siegfried Nassuth's masterplan, the Kleiburg eventually became dilapidated and was at risk for demolition. Protests in recent years prompted a competition seeking the most economically feasible solution to save the structure.

The competition's 2017 “The Living City” theme revolves around promoting public awareness of sustainable urbanization. Participants had to propose a sustainably designed pavilion for the Chart Art Fair's gastronomy partners and SPACE10 that considers upcycling and reusing materials, multifunctionality, and innovative fabrication methods. Most recently, five teams were announced as the finalists.

Six talented winners were revealed today for the 2017 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers. Established in 1981 by the Architectural League of New York, the Prize carries a legacy in that many now-well-known architects received the award at the start of their careers, like Steven Holl, Billie Tsien, Stan Allen, Shih-Fu Peng & Roisin Heneghan, J. Meejin Yoon, James Slade & Minsuk Cho, and several more.

Open to North America-based designers who are no more than 10 years out of school, the juried portfolio competition had “Support” as its 2017 theme. Support “identified a present situation in which precarious forms and precarious social arrangements exist side by side. How does one clarify the modes of support in architecture today when the discipline’s role is obscured by a tangled network in which exchanges between built form and various systems of framing, assistance, and reinforcement are constantly in flux?”

Today, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada announced D'Arcy Jones Architecture (DJA), a nine-person studio from Vancouver, as the 2017 Emerging Architecture Practice Award winner. The yearly award recognizes the principals of an emerging architectural practice that has consistently produced distinguished architecture — based on criteria including quality of built work, service to clients, innovations in practice, and public recognition.

Founded by D'Arcy Jones in 2005, DJA's portfolio comprises mostly of residential projects, but also includes commercial spaces, art galleries, housing, interiors, and renovations that skillfully integrate interior and exterior spaces. So far, DJA has ongoing and completed projects in British Columbia, Ontario, Washington, California, and Switzerland.

Swiss architect Simon Kretz is the lucky protégé who will get to work with David Chipperfield in a year-long architecture mentorship from the 2016-17 Rolex Arts Initiative. Five finalists have been selected for the MoMA PS1 2015 Young Architects Program. The popular yearly program shines the spotlight on emerging architects and invites them to develop an innovative, temporary outdoor urban installation for the MoMA PS1 courtyard in Long Island City, New York for summer 2015.

Finalists will now begin to work on their proposals. Their designs must provide seating, shade, and water, and also follow guidelines that address environmental issues and sustainability. Only one project will be the winner.
