LA's Materials & Applications announce Kate Yeh Chiu as new Executive Director

Materials & Applications (M&A) has announced Kate Yeh Chiu as its new Executive Director, effective January 1, 2021. Kate is a designer, editor, and arts organizer, joining M&A from the Canadian Centre for Architecture, where she holds the position of Digital Editor through March 2021.

Kate has worked as an Education Fellow at Triple Canopy, a Grants Fellow at the Graham Foundation, an editor of Pidgin, in addition to positions with Stan Allen Architect and Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects.

According to M&A, her personal projects "address material flows and labor conditions at the peripheries of architectural production, and she is half of the collaborative project yyyy-mm-dd with François Sabourin." She holds an M.Arch from Princeton University and a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Chicago.

L.A. as mini-golf course: Materials & Applications to host "TURF"

Imagine the conditions of Los Angeles—its housing types, its parking, its response to drought—as a series of mini-golf course obstacles. Or, just go to Materials & Applications this June, when the Silverlake-based exhibition space will launch "TURF: A Mini-Golf Project," featuring the contributions of nine designers, including installations Putt-to-Fit by Knowhow Shop, The Electric Palm Tree Turbine House by Ordinary Architecture, and SiNK by Kyle May.

According to Ordinary Architecture's website, "Part wind turbine, part-palm tree and part-residential tower, the object addresses issues of densification + verticality, renewable technologies and sustainability and architectural symbolism. It plays with images of a future LA that is denser, taller and more environmentally responsible whilst also enjoying the city’s historic iconography." Exclusive: Graham Foundation announces winners of 2015 Grants to Organizations

From Kiev to Los Angeles, from mind-bending artist Dan Graham to stately architect Kevin Roche, the Graham Foundation has announced the 49 international winners of its 2015 Grants to Organizations. Each year, the Foundation gives out two sets of grants: one for individuals including architects, writers, and artists, and one specifically for organizations, such as museums, universities, publishers, and trusts. The grant categories include film, exhibitions, public programs, and publications. This year, $496,500 was awarded to 49 winners from a competitive pool of 200 entries featuring both emerging and established organizations.

In keeping with the Graham Foundation's mission to foster innovative explorations of architecture and art, the winning projects encompass a variety of perceptual and investigative terrain, from the MoMA's exploratory exhibition on Toyo Ito, SANAA and other Japanese architectural firms, to the creation of several new projects for this fall's Chicago Architectur...

A preview of the VIS-Á-VIS performance series at Materials & Applications in Los Angeles

Materials & Applications in Los Angeles has some fun social Saturday night events lined up for the entire month of August! The four-part VIS-Á-VIS performance series will include dance, music, a video and sound installations, and a film screening.

Starting August 9, all events will take place in the Materials & Applications space at the La Cage aux Folles, a 346-piece metal pipe temporary playground installation designed by Warren Techentin Architecture.

August 9: LA Fort Presents: Daedelus (DJ set), Lawrence Lindell, Matt McGuire and Will Walden (StaG) - experimental + electronic music performance

August 16: Tracy Abbott Szatan / IN/VISIBLE - video installation and performance

August 23: bel-air / New York Memo - sound recording installation

AND Ear Cleaning Workshop with Greg Ruben, based on the teaching methodology by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer (spaces limited)

August 30: Eugene Kotlyarenko presents: "Nobody Wants to Play With Me" (Werner Herzog)+rare feature film - a film screening curated by L.A. filmmaker Eugene Kotlyarenko.

Materials & Applications goes from Silver Lake yard art to a museum show

"Places like M&A provide architects with the opportunity to fail. I mean that in the best possible way," said Benjamin Ball of Ball-Nogues, whose practice got its start at M&A. Ball-Nogues works are now in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. "Not many clients will support a trial-and-error process on an untested structure. M&A is a place where you can do that."

Heads up to our Angeleno readers looking for weekend plans, come to the opening reception of "Materials & Applications: Building Something (Beyond) Beautiful, Projects 2002 - 2013", taking place on Jan. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m at the University Art Museum in Cal State Long Beach.

Starting tomorrow, the M&A exhibition will feature works of the most active, up-and-coming names in California architecture.
