He was best known for the firm’s 2003 Kunsthaus Graz and work with <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/252194/bernard-tschumi" target="_blank">Bernard Tschumi</a> on the design of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1915208/parc-de-la-villette" target="_blank">Parc de la Villette</a> in Paris.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/architecture/news/2024/sep/professor-colin-fournier-1944-2024" target="_blank">commemoration</a> from the <a href="https://archinect.com/schools/cover/299/university-college-london-ucl" target="_blank">UCL Bartlett School of Architecture</a> notes: “In addition to his architectural practice, Colin was a dedicated and well-loved educator. He joined The Bartlett in 1998 and inspired generations of students for almost two decades with his distinctive approach to design. As Professor of Urban Design, he was instrumental in the formation and directorship of the Urban Design MArch and led the successful Unit 18 on the Architecture MArch programme for several years with a number of teaching partners. Colin inspired countless students and colleagues throughout his life, and his absence will be felt profoundly by all who were fortunate enough to know him."</p>

The so-called <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2024GL109634" target="_blank">“cool roof” method</a> they found had the best mitigation performance metrics over others surveyed (green roofs, A/C, solar panels, and street-level plant integrations), reducing heat by between 1.3 and 2 degrees Celsius when applied in the right conditions. </p>
<p>Lead author Dr. Oscar Brousse of the UCL Bartlett School Environment, Energy & Resources said: “We comprehensively tested multiple methods that cities like London could use to adapt to and mitigate warming temperatures, and found that cool roofs were the best way to keep temperatures down during extremely hot summer days. Other methods had various important side benefits, but none were able to reduce outdoor <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/651936/heat-island" target="_blank">urban heat</a> to nearly the same level.”</p>

<p>The institution has now issued a <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2022/jun/ucl-apologises-and-takes-action-following-investigation-bartlett-school-architecture" target="_blank">formal apology</a> in response to the independent investigation into educational practices and environment that permeated at the school for decades. </p>
<p>UCL says it is also in receipt of the recommendations for improvement put forth in a recent <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/sites/bartlett/files/the_bartlett_school_of_architecture_environmental_investigation_report_june_2022p_6.pdf" target="_blank">investigative report</a> created by independent consultancy Howlett Brown using a survey of more than 300 former faculty and students. As was expected based on <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150266228/former-students-complain-of-racism-and-sexism-at-ucl-s-bartlett-school-of-architecture" target="_blank">previous reporting</a> of first-hand accounts, the respondents in their survey detailed a frightening and toxic culture of abuse, racism, bullying, and even sexual harassment occurring at every level. University College London’s architecture faculty came out top when the UK’s largest practices were asked their favourite school as part of the AJ’s annual poll.
This comes despite the Bartlett slipping to fourth in the Guardian’s league table, behind Sheffield, Cambridge and Bath.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Over a fifth of AJ100 practices chose UCL's Bartlett with Bath close behind and no other establishment receiving more than 5% of the votes. The Bartlett was also <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/206340/school-rankings" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ranked</a> as the 2nd best architecture school by the <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings-articles/university-subject-rankings/top-architecture-schools-2018-region" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">higher education network QS</a>. </p>

Collaborating with the Bartlett and UCL Estates, architect <a href="http://archinect.com/firms/cover/17125/hawkins-brown-architects" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hawkins\Brown</a> doubled the size of the existing building to 8,500 square meters.</p><p>Preserving some of the original fabric of the old Wates House and using the existing structural concrete frame, the new “flexible and robust” building now includes a public gallery and provides more open working space for the school's 1,000 students and staff. </p><p><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/x9/x90fo2xyit8wyehk.jpg"><br><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/m9/m98yzo9zgcpp1gwo.jpg"><br><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/l0/l06r213hdogjr3ib.jpg"><br><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/1z/1zg7djrtbftxbz4o.jpg"><br><img title="" alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/650x/y8/y8ml169zu310va8n.jpg"></p><p>Hawkins\Brown added a fifth and sixth floor, and a main spiraling stairway within a full-height atrium.
