Located in the German city of Mannheim&rsquo;s Franklin Mitte neighborhood, the building is one of four letter-shaped apartment complexes that together spell out the word HOME.&nbsp;</p> <p>The 15-story building mixes 120 apartments with ground-level commercial units and a bar and terrace. Its distinct form also makes it a local landmark for the neighborhood. This project is part of a larger <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150279242/mvrdv-transforms-former-u-s-military-barracks-with-catalog-of-residential-dwellings" target="_blank">revitalization of the Benjamin Franklin U.S. military barracks</a> in Franklin Mitte, which includes other works, such as the &ldquo;Europa Axis&rdquo; that cuts a straight path through the district and the walkable &ldquo;Green Hill&rdquo; that provides a viewpoint at the heart of the neighborhood.&nbsp;</p> <figure><p><a href="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/88/88eadae4dd8cdc8f30b56bf13acef9ad.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028" target="_blank"><img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/88/88eadae4dd8cdc8f30b56bf13acef9ad.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=514"></a></p></figure><p>The &ldquo;O&rdquo; sits next to the Green Hill and consists of a high-rise and a number of adjacent low-rise buildings. The design for the new neighborhood is shaped by a series of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/781244/modular-housing" target="_blank">options and rules</a>, intended to promote diversity in the streetscape by allowing residents to make meaningful choices about their homes.</p> <figure><figure><a href="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/6b/6b41f85173fb79ecff5e536e6c3c4373.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028" target="_blank"><img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/6b/6b41f85173fb79ecff5e536e6c3c4373.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=514"></a><figcaption>Image via MVRDV</figcaption></figure></figure><p>Funari is one of five districts forming the redevelopment of Mannheim&rsquo;s Franklin quarter, which once housed a U.S. military base. For the scheme&rsquo;s development, MVRDV partnered with prefabricated housing developer Traumhaus, who specializes in housing created from mass-produced, standardized elements. For Funari, MVRDV adapted this standardized approach to create a catalog of housing typologies, allowing residents to choose from variations in materials, sizes, interior layouts, and connections to external space. </p> <figure><figure><a href="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/2d/2d55845aae404e60ef262aa1e7765d38.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=1028" target="_blank"><img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/2d/2d55845aae404e60ef262aa1e7765d38.jpg?auto=compress%2Cformat&amp;enlarge=true&amp;w=514"></a><figcaption>Image via MVRDV</figcaption></figure></figure><p>&ldquo;Traumhaus has already shown how a systematic construction approach can increase a...</p> https://archinect.com/news/article/91241221/inverse-boulevard-special-mention-entry-for-europan-12-germany-mannheim “Inverse Boulevard” - Special Mention entry for Europan 12 Germany, Mannheim Justine Testado 2014-01-14T20:30:00-05:00 >2014-01-14T20:30:30-05:00 <img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/zw/zwoh8exdubpw5ixb.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><em><p>"Inverse Boulevard" by Kawahara Krause Architects is our first entry from Europan 12 Germany for the Mannheim competition site.
