Perkins&Will, Building Transparency, and C Change Labs awarded grant to develop carbon reduction tool

Global design practice Perkins&Will, in collaboration with climate action-focused software company C Change Labs and nonprofit organization Building Transparency Canada, has been awarded a grant to develop a tool that facilitates the design of low-carbon buildings.

Called the Tally Climate Action Tool or tallyCAT, it will build on existing technologies, giving users access to material and product information, in real time, within commonly used BIM programs, such as Revit and Rhino.

The CleanBC Building Innovation Fund (CBBIF) based out of British Columbia awarded the team $460,000 as part of its mission to fund projects in the Canadian province that accelerate the availability and affordability of low-carbon building solutions. The tool is expected to launch in March 2023. It will be globally available as an integrated plugin and provide open access to a library of materials within design software.

After seeing countless application packages and talking to a fair number of hiring managers, the one thing that applicants tend to need the most improvement on are their cover letters. As with anything that will be reviewed by a human, everyone will have their own things they want to see in an application package, so take the following with a grain of salt. Some people want to see a thoughtful cover letter accompany your materials and others could care less what it says, it all depends on the audience. With that said, here are some tips on writing your cover letter:

It's not a copy of your resume. Don't waste your word count on repeating what your resume already communicates. Too many people write cover letters that say things like "In the summer of 2012, I worked at x firm and did x things, and then I worked at x and did x and then..." See what I mean?

SCI-Arc announces full-tuition scholarship for LAUSD students

Are you a LAUSD student who loves architecture and would like to attend SCI-Arc free of charge starting in the fall of 2017? Well, you're in luck: if you apply online by January 15, 2017, you'll be in the running for the recently announced merit-based, full-tuition scholarship for first-year freshmen originating from the metropolitan school district which, if you stay in the top 10% of your class, could last all five collegiate years.

As SCI-Arc director Hernan Diaz Alonso sees it, “SCI-Arc is embedded in the fabric of Los Angeles. With this scholarship we are reaffirming our relationship to the city’s public education system. We are proud of our well-rounded and rigorous Undergraduate program. A Bachelor of Architecture from SCI-Arc provides a creative way to see the world not only in architectural terms, but in sociological, political and economic terms as well.”

Summer DLAB from London's AA School of Architecture is back again for its 2014 cycle. The summer-long workshop emphasizes the integration of algorithmic / generative design methodologies and large scale digital fabrication tools.

Continuing its color-based agenda with White, this year's Summer DLAB will highlight White as a starting point to investigate natural formation processes and interpret them as innovative architectonic spaces.

$100,000 Wheelwright Prize details announced for 2014

The Wheelwright Prize awards a $100,000 travel-based research grant to a recent architect whose proposal conveys a talented, scholarly and professional design sense. Originally established by Harvard's GSD in 1935 as the "Arthur Wheelwright Traveling Fellowship", the prize is meant to extend travel-research opportunities to alumni. As of 2013, eligibility has expanded to any architect who has graduated within the last 15 years from a professionally accredited architecture degree program. The focus is on international research, requiring the winner of the Prize spend at least 6 months working out of their home country, and not in the United States.

More information about the Wheelwright Prize and applying are on Bustler. The online-application opens January 20, 2014, and will close March 4, 2014.

Last year's Wheelwright winner was Brooklyn-based architect Gia Wolff, for her proposal "Floating City: The Community-Based Architecture of Parade Floats".
