Squint/Opera announces merger with Journey as the industry-leading experience designers look to scale up digital production

3D experience pioneer Squint/Opera has been acquired by the digital agency Journey in a move announced on November 1 by the newly-formed entity.

The merger will enable both to pursue an expansion of their services at a time when the industry is seeing an increase in demand thanks to the advent of metaverse design and other forms of media.

“The opportunity to join Journey was momentous.” Julius Coke, the CEO of Squint/Opera, explained in a statement. “Over the last few years Squint has experienced significant growth, as the demand for immersive 3D experiences grows and new platforms and technologies enable a new level of creativity tapping into our storytelling, virtual production and creative media skills.”

The Smart Scale Ruler uses a long screen to display a custom ruler created by the user. This is done by inputting a physical reference of distance and the desired distance. The screen regenerates to create a ruler based on these parameters. Whatever is displayed can be converted to metric or imperial with one button. It can similarly be used to divide spaces equally for 2D drawings, and with a ratio applied for perspective drawings.

The EyeTime competition is back for 2014. The popular annual contest was established by photographers, professors and students to promote the research, exploration and investigation currently happening within today's emerging talent.

Winning photographs from the Emerging Talent (young professionals/enthusiasts) and Future Voices (students) categories will be chosen by the guest jury in addition to the public-viewing "EyeTime" contest. Another bonus: This year's guest jury includes Archinect and Bustler founder/director, Paul Petrunia!

"Architecture and the Unspeakable" full-length film now released

The full-length version of "Architecture and the Unspeakable", directed by John Szot and produced by Brooklyn Digital Foundry, is now officially released to the public. The film features three architecture proposals by John Szot Studio, who visualized three fictional buildings in SoHo, Tokyo, and Detroit. Each building represents a pathological issue that also contributes to the cultural dialogue in architecture, thus exploring the connection between virtual architecture and the physical world.

The film has been featured at public events throughout the U.S. since last month. An upcoming screening is currently scheduled for November 13 at the Pinkcomma Gallery in Boston.

Barcelona wins Grand Prize in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge for Europe

Michael Bloomberg's Bloomberg Philanthropies revealed the winners of its first European edition of the Mayors Challenge. More than 150 top cities from 28 European nations entered the competition, which asked participants to send their most innovative ideas that address Europe's timely pressing issues like unemployment, energy efficiency, obesity, aging, and improving government efficiency.

Barcelona took the Grand Prize for Innovation and €5 million to help implement their proposal, Collaborative Care Networks for Better Aging, a digital and community "trust network" for each of its at-risk elderly residents.

Innovation prizes of €1 million were also given to the following cities:

Athens, Greece: Synathina, a Public Platform for Engaged Citizens
Kirklees, in Yorkshire, United Kingdom: Kirklees Shares
Stockholm, Sweden: Biochar - for a Better City Ecosystem
Warsaw, Poland: Virtual Warsaw - Urban Information System for the Visually Impaired

In addition to prize money, each winning city will receive technical assistance, expert coaching, and a trophy specially designed by renowned artist Olafur Eliasson.

Baumgartner+Uriu’s "Apertures" shell structure challenges the conventions of sustainable design

Baumgartner+Uriu looked to none other than Mother Nature for their Apertures installation, which was publicly displayed at the SCI-Arc Gallery in Los Angeles this past spring. If B+U's Apertures sound familiar, perhaps you may recall their "Animated Apertures" Housing Tower that was exhibited at the FRAC Center in Orleans, France.

Whatever its organic form reminds you of, the shell structure let visitors catch a glimpse of B+U's ongoing exploration in architectural biomimicry and how it challenges the boundaries of ecological design.
