OMA completes renovation of Tiffany & Co. Manhattan flagship with rooftop extension

OMA has completed its transformation of Tiffany & Co.’s 5th Avenue flagship in New York City. The updated store now features a three-story rooftop addition designed by OMA and interiors by Peter Marino.

The project marks the first significant renovation of the store since its opening in 1940. Now known as ‘The Landmark,’ the store “invites visitors to discover the history and range of Tiffany & Co. goods in a redefined flagship environment of displays and shared experiences,” according to OMA.

The interior of the existing limestone building sees a central core reorganized to create a clear elevator lobby and improved visitor flow. Atop the building, a new three-story volume houses a dedicated gallery, exhibition, and event space.

Peter Marino debuts signature handbag for Louis Vuitton

Peter Marino is one of six artists included in the latest update of Louis Vuitton’s signature Artycapucines handbag collection. The incorrigible leatherdaddy and designer of several of the brand’s flagship locations says his all-black contribution was inspired by a medieval strongbox he discovered while visiting a 14th century Venetian palace.

He joins Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, Sol LeWitt, and other artists to have been featured in the now 9-year-old collection. Bags go for €8,000 but are still rugged enough for everyday wear, despite the dual sculptural qualities he also preferred.

“It was a fun challenge,” Marino recently told WWD. “I design furniture for Vuitton; I design carpets and doorknobs, so it’s very much in the vein of what I do for them. This is not a wussie handbag,”

The January 2021 issue of Architectural Digest featured a remodeled $42 million San Francisco residence described as a Spanish Renaissance Revival palacio. [...] ...shows ancient Khmer sculptures resting on the same pedestals. The Cambodian government says those stone relics, depicting the heads of gods and demons, match a set that was looted years ago from one of the nation’s sacred sites.

The tony $42 million Peter Marino-designed San Francisco manse was the subject of a multi-page spread in the January 2021 edition of the magazine. A spokesperson for Architectural Digest said that photoshopping was required by “unresolved publication rights around select artworks,” but an eagle-eyed attorney working for Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts who originally spotted the empty plinths indicated their resemblance to a pair allegedly taken from one of the country's most sacred sites a few years ago.

“It’s easily one of the most important statues in the temple, and probably all of Koh Ker,” Bradley J. Gordon is reported to have told the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). “By having this in their collection, the Lindemanns essentially had the Cambodian equivalent of a sarcophagus stolen from King Tut’s tomb sitting in their living room.”

Marino spoke to artist Rashid Johnson for Interview at length about his early client, the magazine's founder Andy Warhol, as well as a host of other topics, including his art collection, time at Cornell, and what he sees as the gradual evolution of pop art’s influence into the works of contemporaries like Michael Graves.

“I think some of Graves’s work is very good, but as an architectural movement, it’s very mannerist. It’s one person’s interpretation. Pop art shaded him, and I was always a bit terrified of the postmodern movement. I thought Venturi, Scott Brown [and Associates] did good work, but I think it’s fair to describe it as a niche section in the field.”

The new Peter Marino Art Foundation opens in a restored Hamptons library

The new Peter Marino Art Foundation opened on Long Island’s East End last month, revealing to the public for the first time the famed collection of the prodigious architect known worldwide for his retail spaces and Leather Daddy aesthetic.

The Foundation is housed in the former Rogers Memorial Library purchased in 2018 from the town of Southampton. The library was the former home of the Parrish Art Museum and was being rented by decor retailer One Kings Lane before the sale.

Marino was able to overhaul the 126-year-old structure originally designed by R.H. Robertson, carefully restoring the 8,000-square-foot space that retained some of its original elements such as its Gothic towers and porcelain-tiled first-floor mantel. The project also added new features that complement the original interior, including a parquet floor and bluestone outdoor walkway. A new garden inspired by Warren H. Featuring a rippling glass facade by SANAA, the fully restored La Samaritaine department store opens in Paris after 16 years

The overhauled La Samaritaine department store is now open in Paris after an $894 million restoration that has kept the building closed since 2005.

The new Samaritaine features a rippling glass veiled facade, covered patios, repaired skylights, and an updated 1907 roof that gives the shopping center's restored interior an opulent feel.

Japanese firm SANAA worked to restore the Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings for LVHM with help from Canadian studio Yabu Pushelberg. The new Samaritaine Pont-Neuf building will now serve as a luxury shopping destination in a 19th-century retail space itself reconstructed a century ago by architect Frantz Jourdain.

Peter Marino designs Louis Vuitton store in Paris's Place Vendôme

What could be more fitting as a symbol of rebirth in the City of Light, than a golden sun streaming spiralling metal rays? That’s the resplendent installation that Louis Vuitton visual creative director Faye Mcleod conceived for the façade of the maison’s new Peter Marino-designed Paris flagship.

Louis Vuitton moves back to Place Vendôme in the most expensive part of Paris. The store occupies two 18th centurary hôtel particuliers. On the building façade, shines a giant golden sun. Apart from this addition, the exterior has not been transformed. The interiors of the store are contemporary and thus, we can't blame the loss of their historical cachet to Marino—the building had already been redesigned in the 1980s to become an office space.

About the project Marino says "I thought I would juxtapose a modern aesthetic to everything within the walls and restore as beautifully and faithfully as possible the exterior. The balance between modern and old, is for me, what Paris is all about."

In leather, as always―Peter Marino designs a pen

In the Varius Peter Marino special edition version, leather combined with hand-lacing allows the personality of the fountain and rollerball pens to come to the fore. The cap is topped with a silver and rhodium-plated skull with black onyx eyes. The second version of the pen, the Varius Peter Marino limited edition, is also dressed in leather and is available as a fountain pen, rollerball pen and ballpoint, and in a nod to fashion, fine gray stitching runs the length of the instrument.

Peter Marino created a limited-edition pen collection in collaboration with Geneva-based Caran d’Ache, which has previously used materials such as chain mail, ceramic and wood in their adventurous designs.

“The pen is inspired by a combination of high performance motorcycle aesthetics with my own personal style," said Marino.

Peter Marino to be honored by the Museum of the City of New York

Peter Marino, leather-clad provocateur, will be honored at the Museum of the City of New York and presented the 2017 City of Design Award. The Award honors “creative entrepreneurs who have made New York City the design capital of the world and who inspire future generations of designers to bring their talents to our great.” Previous recipients include Jonathan Adler, Jacques Grange, Ralph Pucci and Simon Doonan.

Marino is the principal of Peter Marino Architect PLLC, a 160-person firm based out of New York. He is know, in particular, for projects like The Getty and Hublot in New York and the Louis Vuitton store in Los Angeles, among many other works.

Marino has also faced a fair share of controversy. Last year, he was accused of making homophobic slurs—ironic enough considering the LGBTQ-associations of his garb. The year before Marino was accused of sexism and racism. Both accusations were lodged by former employees.

Peter Marino, accused of racial discrimination and sexism, countersues over alleged homophobic slurs

Peter Marino, the leather-clad architect best known for his collaborations with fashion labels, was sued last year for racial discrimination by a former employee. Now, he's accusing the employee of making homophobic slurs, according to a report by the New York Post.

Deirdre O'Brien worked for Marino for 14 years before, allegedly, being fired after complaining when Marino called her a "c--t." He's also been accused of using the n-word.

In response, Marino has accused O'Brien called a male co-worker a "big homo" and sent "explicit pornographic images" from her work email address.
