In its 26th year, the Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition challenges architects and designers to create outstanding works through the use of Italian ceramics and porcelain tile. A well known building material, ceramic and tile usage can be found through out architecture's historical timeline. As modern technology and advancement in building materials has progressed the beauty in ceramic and tiles still remains.

This year architects and designers are invited to submit their projects that utilize Italian ceramic tiles in an aesthetically beautiful, original, and functional way. Past winners of the competition include leading industry names such as Gensler, Cooper Carry, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Studio Libeskind, and more.

It's a throwback to the late 19th/early 20th century days when factories weren't necessarily about dehumanizing automation but rather more about the complexity of manufacturing using all sorts of tools and last-minute problem-solving techniques. At this year's CES in Las Vegas, licensing company Ossia is unveiling a drop ceiling tile that purports to wirelessly charge a variety of devices, depending of course on how close the device is to the tile. The more tiles, the chargier: up to four Cota Tiles can be combined to provide the maximum radius and charge to those battery-draining devices. As the press release explains:

Each Cota Tile contains Ossia's wireless power smart antenna technology that automatically powers Cota-enabled devices — from tablets to smoke alarms. Cota Tile has proven safe for operation around people, pets and plants. It is environmentally friendly and does not interfere with Wi-Fi or other wireless technologies while continuously streaming power to multiple Cota-enabled devices, even as they move around a room. And more intriguingly, did Aalto exploit error to acheive a certain aesthetic/politically pointed effect?
