A well known building material, ceramic and tile usage can be found through out architecture's historical timeline. This year architects and designers are invited to submit their projects that utilize Italian ceramic tiles in an aesthetically beautiful, original, and functional way. Lithuanian design studio Gyva Grafika transforms bathroom tiles into apartment block windows

A couple of years ago, Lithuanian design studio Gyva Grafika was tasked with redecorating the bathroom of a local restaurant in the city of Kaunas, about 62 miles west of Vilnius. They came up with a uniquely nostalgic idea: bathroom tiles that make the stalls take on the appearance of the panel buildings that came to represent the whole of the Eastern Bloc (and spread to other Communist countries, like Cuba).

Without having to replace the pre-existing tiles, the firm created stickers that, placed on top of the tiles, would create the appearance of a Soviet-era public housing block. The design intervention was done for Galeria Urbana bar—a hipster hot-spot in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania—and carried out by Gyva Grafika, a local studio specializing in graphics and design. The project has been so successful that the studio has even begun selling them.

A factory-making factory: Assemble revives manufacturing (sort of)

By creating a machine that extrudes shaped clay, Assemble have created a factory that places an emphasis on the physical creation of one's environment (as well as the spontaneous ideas that can develop from working with materials and processes).

It's a throwback to the late 19th/early 20th century days when factories weren't necessarily about dehumanizing automation but rather more about the complexity of manufacturing using all sorts of tools and last-minute problem-solving techniques. Ceiling tile that wirelessly charges devices unveiled at CES 2017

The days of having to purchase astonishingly expensive replacement charging plugs accidentally left behind on trips, or for that matter of lugging around charging plugs in general, may be over. At this year's CES in Las Vegas, licensing company Ossia is unveiling a drop ceiling tile that purports to wirelessly charge a variety of devices, depending of course on how close the device is to the tile. The more tiles, the chargier: up to four Cota Tiles can be combined to provide the maximum radius and charge to those battery-draining devices. As the press release explains:

Exploring Alvar Aalto's "benign errors"

Could one of Alvar Aalto's most sublime works be the result of a mistake? And more intriguingly, did Aalto exploit error to acheive a certain aesthetic/politically pointed effect? In this thoughtful piece on Medium, Dan Hill explores the role of "benign errors" in Aalto's work, a term the architect himself coined. Hill centers his focus on the concert hall known as Finlandia, taking particular issue with (but not limiting his scope to) the building's marble facade, noting that:

"Even more remarkably, this apparently uniform and utterly wonderful bowed marble grid appears to have been a mistake, an outcome of the temperature extremes in Helsinki (I’m reminded of the Dali-esque images of failing façades from Jeffrey Inaba's talk at Postopolis regarding Kazakhstan’s -40ºC to +40ºC, though it’s not quite that bad here.)"

Preserving Central Asia's ancient architecture through code

It is not enough to just catalogue these [structures] in photos and videos, it is our aim to break down the logic of these patterns, and recreate them in code in order to make them more accessible and possibly allowing them to find new life in contemporary applications. By building an open source library, accessible to architects, artists, mathematicians, and software engineers, we can carry these patterns and traditions forward for future generations.

Lauren Connell (architect at BIG), Alexis Burson (associate at Pei Cobb Freed & Partners), and Baris Yuksel (Google senior engineer) share their architectural and computer engineering perspectives on Project Agama. The collaboration aims to document and digitally preserve the intricate geometric patterns and tilework of ancient Central Asian architecture by converting the patterns to code, which will eventually become a accessible resource for architects to potentially apply in new applications.

Taking place annually for the last 22 years, the Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition is back for 2016! Architects and designers worldwide are invited to submit their projects that utilize Italian ceramic tiles in an aesthetically beautiful, original, and functional way. Do you already have a ceramic tile project you've been eager to showcase? This competition could be your chance! The submission deadline is January 15, 2016.

To qualify for the competition, projects must be designed by North American-based architects and designers, completed in the past five years (January 2011 to January 2016), and feature a significant portion of Italian ceramic or porcelain tile.

Domestic and international projects, renovations and new buildings, and all scales and styles will be equally considered in three categories: residential, commercial and institutional. An international jury of design experts will select three winning projects and honorable mentions in each category.

Mark your calendars! Some popular architects will be speaking in the upcoming "Innovators" talk series at the Museum of the City of New York, starting tomorrow May 6 at 6:30 p.m... Accompanying the current "Palaces for the People" exhibition, each talk will explore the influence of the Guastavino Company, led by a Catalan father-son team whose architecture, construction, and design practices helped shape NYC's built landscape.

First major Guastavino exhibition opening at MCNY on March 26

The upcoming "Palaces for the People: Guastavino and the Art of Structural Tile" exhibition will showcase the works of Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino and his son Rafael Jr. that helped shape the architectural identity of New York City.

Opening at the Museum of the City of New York on March 26, the exhibition will share the story of the Guastavinos, whose family legacy graces the vaulted and tiled ceilings of over 200 historic NYC buildings like the Grand Central Terminal, Ellis Island, Carnegie Hall, and the Bronx Zoo's Elephant House.

The exhibition was first organized by MacArthur Fellow John Ochsendorf from MIT before MCNY expanded it to feature 20 major Guastavino projects throughout NYC's five boroughs. The exhibition will include never-before-seen drawings and materials, an 11 ft x 15 ft replica of a Guastavino vault, contemporary photos by Michael Freeman, and a video gallery installation that lets viewers "visit" Guastavino spaces.
