Dominique Perrault presented with the 2015 Praemium Imperiale gold medal for architecture

Following last month's announcement, Dominique Perrault was presented with the 2015 Praemium Imperiale Arts Award medal for architecture during a formal ceremony today in Tokyo. Comparable to the Nobel Peace Prize, the prestigious award celebrates extraordinary achievement in the fields of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Music and Theatre/Film.

In recent years, the prize was awarded to Steven Holl, David Chipperfield, Henning Larsen, Ricardo Legorreta, Toyo Ito, Zaha Hadid, and Peter Zumthor, to name a few.

Alongside Perrault, the Praemium Imperiale medals were also presented to four notable cultural figures: Japanese-born British pianist Mitsuko Uchida; French ballerina Sylvie Guillem, German sculptor Wolfgang Laib, and graphic designer and artist Tadanori Yokoo. The 2015 Grant for Young Artists award (5 million yen) will go to Myanmar's Yangon Film School (headquartered in Berlin).

Shigeru Ban named as 2014 Pritzker Prize Laureate

Japanese architect Shigeru Ban has been announced as the 2014 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Established by the Pritzker family of Chicago in 1979, the prestigious award is widely regarded as "the Nobel Prize" in the architecture profession.

Shigeru Ban will be the seventh Japanese architect to become a Pritzker Laureate — following the late Kenzo Tange in 1987, Fumihiko Maki in 1993, Tadao Ando in 1995, the team of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa in 2010, and Toyo Ito in 2013.

Shigeru Ban will officially accept the prize at a formal ceremony in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on June 13, 2014. This will be the first time the ceremony will be held in The Netherlands.

Past recipients in recent years include Toyo Ito (2013), Wang Shu (2012), Eduardo Souto de Moura (2011), SANAA (2010), and Peter Zumthor (2009). Laureates receive a $100,000 grant, a formal citation certificate, and a bronze medallion based on the designs of famed Chicago architect Louis Sullivan.

Kenneth Frampton to receive Lisbon Triennale Lifetime Achievement Award 2013

Architecture critic, historian, and professor Kenneth Frampton was named as the 2013 laureate for the Lisbon Triennale Lifetime Achievement Award on Dec. 15.

The award recognizes a person or practice whose work and ideas have had a lasting influence on architectural theory and practice today. This year, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale commissioned Portuguese artist Fernanda Fragateiro to design the prize.

Frampton will accept the award at a ceremony taking place at Lisbon’s Centro Cultural de Belém in early January 2014. He will also give a featured lecture at the event.

"The jury composed by Beatrice Galilee, Gonçalo Byrne, Guilherme Wisnik, Juhani Pallasmaa, Mónica Gili, Taro Igarashi and William Menking chose Kenneth Frampton for his outstanding contribution to architectural theorization and critical reflection, both as as lecturer and author of countless articles, essays and monographs.
