New Buffalo Bills stadium reaches milestone with start of structural steel construction

A milestone was reached recently regarding the construction of the new, Populous-designed Buffalo Bills football stadium, the New Highmark Stadium.

The 60,000-seat facility, located in Orchard Park, New York, is now ready for large-scale structural steel work. This marks the completion of excavation work, seven months after the project broke ground in June 2023. Approximately 25,000 tons of steel will be installed, with several massive cranes used to build the superstructure. The steel will be erected in tiers over the next 12–14 months.

Following the placement of the steel framework, the structure will be clad, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical will be installed, and each of the sections of the stadium will be built out.

Construction on the 1.35-million-square-foot stadium is expected to be completed in 2026. The Gilbane-Turner joint venture is in charge of construction.

Tennessee Titans pick construction team for new Nashville NFL stadium

NFL franchise Tennessee Titans has announced that Tennessee Builders Alliance (TBA) will serve as the Construction Manager at Risk on its new stadium project.

TBA consists of Nashville-based ICF Builders, Polk & Associates, Turner Construction Company, and AECOM Hunt. The team has more than 55 years of NFL stadium construction experience, with Turner and AECOM Hunt behind 17 of the 30 most recently completed NFL stadiums.

Renderings of the Titans’ proposed $1.2 billion, 60,000-seat stadium by Manica Architecture in collaboration with HASTINGS Architecture were revealed in October 2022. The structure will span 1.7 million square feet and sit along Nashville’s East Bank, on the east side of the current stadium. It will feature a circular ETFE translucent roof, exterior porches with panoramic views of the city, improved sightlines for spectators through a variety of seating experiences, and a 12,000-square-foot community space that is available year-round.

DIALOG & Group2 selected to design $54 million mass timber student housing facility

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) in British Columbia has selected Canadian firms DIALOG and Group2 to design and the construction companies Clark Builders and Turner to build a six-story, CAD $73 million (USD $54 million) mass timber student housing building.

Located on the University’s Abbotsford campus, the facility will feature 398 beds, increasing on-campus student housing from 200 beds to 598.

Architect and DIALOG partner Marion LaRue said the firm aims to create a welcoming and efficient student housing building that utilizes leading techniques and materials.

The building will include lounges, shared kitchens, study rooms, and mixed-use and cultural spaces. It will also integrate passive house building certification standards.

Tuskegee University's School of Architecture and Construction Science receives new annual $70,000 HBCU grant from Turner Construction Company

Tuskegee University has announced the establishment of an HBCU grant program by Turner Construction Company to provide the school’s architecture, construction science and management, and engineering programs with $70,000 annually starting this fall.

The money will be used towards student tuition assistance, internships, financial support for travel, software, and equipment to benefit learning objectives and reciprocal teaching to support an interdisciplinary capstone project at The School of Architecture and Construction Science and Management (TSACS). Tuskegee University is one of eight HBCUs to receive professional development and training led by Turner through the company’s diversity manager and talent acquisition team.

Concrete frame at LA Clippers' new Intuit Dome arena tops out

The AECOM-Hunt Turner joint venture is celebrating the topping out of the Intuit Dome’s concrete frame, the future home of the Los Angeles Clippers.

According to Turner, more than 200,000 hours of work were performed by 350 workers to complete the frame. During construction, 65,000 cubic yards of concrete were placed, and 6,600 concrete mix truck deliveries were completed. The largest foundation pour was 2,572 cubic yards, and the largest deck pour was 980 cubic yards.

Amid contractor competition and COVID-19, construction costs fall for the first time since 2010

A new report from Turner Construction Company highlights an unexpected trend that has taken shape in recent months: lower construction costs for non-residential projects.

According to Turner's quarterly Building Cost Index, construction costs decreased during the second quarter of 2020 by 1.01%, reversing a nearly equal increase seen during the first quarter of 2020.

Describing the contents of the report, Attilio Rivetti, the Turner vice president responsible for compiling the Cost Index, explains, “Trade contractor competition has increased in many areas as they work to secure backlog due to uncertainty they have about future opportunities. We expect the third quarter will serve to more clearly define the fluctuation of escalation of cost in the construction industry."

Lean Construction Institute named as 2013 Turner Prize recipient

The National Building Museum and Turner Construction Company recently announced Lean Construction Institute as the recipient of the 11th Henry C. Turner Prize for Innovation in Construction. The annual Turner Prize recognizes advances or high achievement in the process of construction.

To mark the occasion, LCI co-founder Greg Howell, executive director Dan Heinemeier, and board chair Victor Sanvido will discuss the benefits of lean construction in their presentation, "Faster, Better, Safer: Lean Design and Construction" on Dec. 4.
