SOM will deliver new $700 million climate center to NYC’s Governors Island

A new 400,000-square-foot climate campus scheme for New York City’s Governors Island has been unveiled by SOM and Mayor Eric Adams at the close of a two-year competitive bids process for a project that is expected to support cutting-edge environmental research while creating green jobs and educational opportunities for future generations.

Stony Brook University is leading the New York City Exchange development, which will also add $1 billion in economic benefits to the city. The university will partner with a list of 15 schools and organizations, including IBM, Georgia Tech, and Oxford University, and offer space to 30 other entities from the non-profit sector, all with expertise that touches on the development’s core program areas of environmental justice, water rights, workforce development, education, and labor.

Being a fresh graduate in the lamentably real world is perhaps one of the steepest transitions an architect ever faces, which is part of the inspiration behind Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation's newly launched Incubator program. Billing itself as a kind of professional bridge building/idea lab initiative, Incubator helps alumni network with professionals in the technological industry in a dedicated interdisciplinary co-working space located in The Bowery in New York City. The first iteration of Incubator features eleven groups including FAMILY + PLAYLAB + POOL, IrisVR, and KOSMOS.

The groups are developing projects that encompass a swath of contemporary architectural concerns and territories, including public spaces, critical discourse and publishing, virtual reality, urban regeneration, and digital technology, with the goal of helping Incubator's members entrepreneurially explore ties between technology, culture, and architecture.

SO-IL and Gensler to design creative cultural incubator for New Museum

The New Museum will be opening an incubator for art, technology, and design next summer in the institution's adjacent building at 231 Bowery in New York. SO-IL architects in collaboration with Gensler will design the new 11,000 sq.foot facility, which will be located inside a 19th-century structure that formerly belonged to artists like James Rosenquist and Tom Wesselmann.

Developed by Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum and Deputy Developer Karen Wong, the incubator will serve as a collaborative platform of shared educational and professional workspace for more than 60 start-up companies and creative entrepreneurs. The project is the latest addition to program series that aims to challenge the boundaries and relevance of museum practice in the 21st century.
