Despite what you might assume </p><p>"<em>Shelter isn’t about designing for the 21st century family, or the millenial, or the homeless, in Los Angeles – it’s about forming new expectations of how housing and the city should interact...housing imagined in Shelter is about merging L.A.’s residential spaces with its civic topography, forming a less privatized residential existence in the city</em>".</p><p>The winners of Archinect's Dry Futures competition were selected. In the "Speculative" category "Grassroots Cactivism" by Ali Chen took <a href="http://archinect.com/features/article/136742264/and-the-winners-of-archinect-s-dry-futures-competition-speculative-category-are" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">first place</a>. While "Liquifying Aquifers by Lujac Desautel <a href="http://archinect.com/features/article/136743068/and-the-winners-of-archinect-s-dry-futures-competition-pragmatic-category-are" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">won first place</a> in the "Pragmatic" category. </p><p><a href="http://archinect.com/people/cover/15884683/deane-madsen" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Deane Madsen</a> was impressed "<em>A timely and relevant competition with thoughtful responses. Nick Hufton and Al Crow of Hufton + Crow were announced as the 2014 overall winners of the Arcaid Images Architectural Photographer of the Year award at the end of World Architecture Festival in Singapore on October 3.</p></em><br /><br /><p>Hufton + Crow won the prestigious award for their interior photograph of Zaha Hadid Architects' well-known Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan. (pictured above). Another first in this year's competition is that the Heydar Aliyev Center is the first architectural project to win the widely recognized award.</p></em><br /><br /><p>The competition began with <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/93401323/seventy-six-nominations-listed-for-designs-of-the-year-2014" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">76 nominations</a> in the categories Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphics, Product, and Transport, followed by the selection of the <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/98565093/seven-category-winners-for-designs-of-the-year-2014" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">seven Category winners</a>.</p><p>Any thoughts on the jury's selection? As we wrote in February, Azerbaijan’s leaders want to make their capital city a destination for the rich and fabulous. The latest example: the Heydar Aliyev Center designed by Zaha Hadid, for whom it offered the rare opportunity of nearly total design freedom.
