OPEN Architecture turns 100-year-old fuel containers into "containers of culture"

A project that took a little over six years to design and construct opened its doors this week along Huangpu River in Shanghai's West Bund. The brainchild of famed Chinese collector and businessman Qiao Zhbing, Tank Shanghai consists of five preserved oil tanks which are connected by OPEN architecture's "Super-Surface," a new ground that connects each tank underneath the surface. Along the Super-Surface is an Urban Forest which stretches along the entire site as well as two plaza spaces which will host ceremonies and events. The firm's goal was to pay tribute to the site's industrial past while creating a new urban life through a marriage of art and nature within the city.

“Sangam Culture Storage” - Second-prize entry by Kyuseon Hong for Mapo Oil Reserve Base competition

It's time for another project feature from the Mapo Oil Reserve Base design competition we recently covered: "Sangam Culture Storage" from second-prize entry winner Kyuseon Hong. Sangam Culture Storage addresses the need of an art and culture facility for the Mapo Oil site, which is already surrounded by notable sports arenas like the Sangam World Cup Stadium, educational facilities, and residential areas.

Mapo Oil Reserve Base competition - First place entry by Sunggi Park and Hyemin Jang

The Public Development Center of the Seoul Metropolitan Government recently announced the winners for "The first step to changing the Mapo Oil Reserve Base" international competition. The ideas competition challenged student and professional participants to repurpose the Mapo Oil Reserve Base in Sangam, Seoul, South Korea, which has been out of use for the past 10 years.

Sunggi Park, a graduate student at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Hyemin Jang, an undergraduate architecture student at Cornell University, won the first prize of $10,000 for their project "Resonance of Light."
