Get Lectured: Carnegie Mellon University, Spring '24

The School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University has shared its Spring ‘24 events lineup as part of our Get Lectured roundup of the different public programming taking place on campus this semester.

Momoyo Kaijima of Atelier Bow-Wow kicks things off with a conversation on January 27, followed by a lecture and book signing on January 29. Brian MacKay-Lyons of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple and Anssi Lassila of Office for Peripheral Architecture follow next with a dual lecture on February 15. Their event is followed by a special bookmaking workshop and lecture from Harvard GSD’s Phillip Denny on February 22 and 23. Wallmakers founder Vinu Daniels follows Denny with another lecture held on March 29.

The semester continues with a presentation from the Sweet Water Foundation’s Emmanuel Pratt on April 5. The group Architectural Workers United will then host a Consensus-Building Workshop on April 8, and the semester ends with the opening of 2022-24 Joseph F. Thomas Visiting Professor Pri...

Pittsburgh's Institute for Contemporary Art reveals ZGF-designed expansion at Carnegie Mellon University

ZGF Architects has announced plans for an expansion of the Miller Institute for Contemporary Art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

As part of the design, the soon-to-be-renamed Institute for Contemporary Art Pittsburgh will increase in size by three times its current operating capacity. Located near other important cultural institutions inside of the new Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences at the edge of Carnegie Mellon’s campus on Forbes Avenue, the 29,000-square-foot space serves as an interdisciplinary “advocate for new ideas and an aggregator of communities” in dialogue with the neighboring Carnegie Museum of Art and a growing audience of scholars, students, and faculty.

The program calls for a 338,000-square-foot complex of buildings to be divided into two components: a looping wing that contains the ICA and other university spaces, and a set-back tower that will be the new home of the CMU Mellon College of Science ...

Archinect's Get Lectured offers an overview of different events and lectures taking place at architecture schools each semester. Today, our series continues with a look at what’s happening this Fall at Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture in Pittsburgh.

The semester’s theme is ‘Revolutions.’ The school shares: “The fall highlights architects who, to borrow Toni Cade Bambara’s phrase, 'make the revolution irresistible'ⁱ — artists and thinkers who challenge us to envision a multitude of approaches to making and being.”

Events kick off with activist and filmmaker Jim LeBrecht’s presentation of his 2020 documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution on September 22. The Harvard GSD’s Ana María León will come to campus for a lecture on September 29, followed by the opening of the Systemic Design Association symposium Addressing Wicked Challenges: Colloquies for Transgenerational Collaboration on October 4.

The new semester is upon us, and Archinect is continuing with our Get Lectured series with a look at the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture’s public programs for the Spring of 2023.

The school shares that this term’s theme revolves around an examination of “extractivism” and the role architects play in shaping “material economies.” Events began on January 23 with a virtual lecture from DNA Architects founder Xu Tiantian. His appearance was followed on January 30 with a student-led discussion on the topic of urban ecology. Next up is a lecture from Pittsburgh Department of City Planning Director Karen Abrams on February 6, followed by a panel discussion on Non-Extractive Practices and Non-Human Species moderated by CMU visiting professor and Nepali-Canadian designer Priyanka Bista on February 13 in the school’s Kresge Theatre.

Architect Gita Balakrishnan embarks on 1,000-mile walk to spread awareness on importance of design

Kolkata-based architect Gita Balakrishnan has embarked upon a 1,700-km walk from Kolkata to New Delhi on Sunday to spread awareness on how good design can play a substantial role in changing lives. Doing 30-35km per day, she plans to reach Delhi in two months on April 16.

The walk aims to shed light on the role the architecture and design industry plays in society and the issues it seeks to address. The initiative was conceptualized by the Ethos Foundation, which Balakrishnan founded in 2002 as a means to connect students and professionals in the AEC industry, in collaboration with the Council of Architecture (CoA) and the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA).

Balakrishnan will travel through West Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. She is a graduate of the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, and she completed her practical training at the Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics at Carnegie Mellon University.

Pittsburgh is the latest city to join the dark-sky movement

The Pennsylvania city announced in August it will become a dark sky city starting in 2022, meaning that it will switch to lower wattage LED bulbs and add shades along bridges, roads and other public areas. It’s the first city in the eastern part of the U.S. to adopt such policies but it joins other cities, including Tucson, Sedona and Flagstaff in Arizona, and Fulda in Germany, in their efforts to reduce light pollution and increase energy efficiency.

The dark-sky movement officially began in 1988, has produced events such as Earth Hour, and is currently expanding into other U.S. cities such as Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.

Light pollution caused by stronger “white” LED fixtures has been shown to cause health and environmental harm along with negatively impacting the circadian rhythm of both humans and animals alike. To date, Pittsburgh has committed $16 million dollars to streetlight projects which will install about 40,000 fixtures in a period of 12–18 months. The city’s push is also beneficial to the reduction of traffic accidents and sense of pedestrian safety, according to Carnegie Mellon professor Diane Turnshek.

“It’s better for the environment, if you change to these low wattage and low color temperature lights,” she told Bloomberg. “It’s better for people’s health, better stars, and just across the board they’re better.”

The school continues with its SoA Dialogue Series titled "Framing Utopias." This special series is conducted "is a set of moderated themed conversations, challenging and inspiring us to re-envision our future."

Carnegie Mellon names Omar Khan as new School of Architecture Head

Designer and educator Omar Khan has been appointed as the new Head of the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture.

Khan is currently the chair of the Department of Architecture at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. Khan is also a co-principal, with Laura Garófalo, of design-research practice Liminal Projects and partner, with Jordan Geiger, in Gekh, a design consultancy.

Khan has served as University at Buffalo department chair for seven years and has helped lead the school's efforts to expand graduate offerings there while also developing key industry collaborations, according to a statement published to the Carnegie Mellon website.

Additionally, Khan has co-directed the Center for Architecture and Situated Technologies (CAST) and has edited the Situated Technologies Pamphlet Series. Starting later this month, Uber will allow customers in downtown Pittsburgh to summon self-driving cars from their phones, crossing an important milestone that no automotive or technology company has yet achieved.
