UVA professor Ellen M. Bassett has been announced as dean of Georgia Tech's College of Design

More movement at the top of the academic landscape this week as Georgia Tech has announced University of Virginia urban and environmental planning professor Ellen M. Bassett as the next John Portman Dean’s Chair of the university’s College of Design.

A former Fulbright Scholar, Bassett has taught at Portland State University, UVA, and Michigan State. At UVA Bassett serves as the Associate Dean for Research in addition to her teaching role and is currently director of the school’s Real Estate Design and Development certificate program.

Bassett holds degrees from the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively, and spent over a decade working in East Africa as an urban and environmental planner in addition to working closely with the World Bank and U.S. Department of State in consultant roles.

Mabel O. Wilson receives UVA's Distinguished Alumni award

Architect, historian, and educator Mabel O. Wilson has been named as the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient by the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Architecture.

Wilson graduated from UVA with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1985, and has been selected to receive the prestigious award among other "exceptional graduates from the School of Architecture who have demonstrated creativity, innovation, leadership, and vision through their distinguished body of work, within the professional, academic, civic, or artistic realms, as well as their service to the University of Virginia," according to the school's website.

Professor Wilson is the Nancy and George E. Rupp Professor of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and Professor of African American and African Diasporic Studies at Columbia University. Ila Berman named dean of University of Virginia School of Architecture

The University of Virginia announced today that Ila Berman has been appointed the dean of the School of Architecture. Currently a tenured full professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, as well as a principal of SCALESHIFT design in Toronto, she will assume the role Aug. 15. [...] Berman succeeds Dean Elizabeth K. Meyer, who will return to the faculty at the end of a two-year term.

Executive Vice President and Provost John Simon today announced the appointment of Elizabeth K. Meyer to a two-year term as dean of the University of Virginia School of Architecture. Meyer, the Merrill D. Peterson Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University, begins serving in the new role on July 15. Toyo Ito to receive 2014 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture

Renowned Japanese architect Toyo Ito was recently named the recipient of the 2014 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture. Hosted by the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Architecture, the annual award recognizes achievements in fields that Thomas Jefferson -- the 3rd U.S. president, author of the Declaration of Independence, and founder of UVA -- excelled in and highly regarded.

Ito will formally receive the medal on Friday, April 11, instead of the traditional date of Jefferson's birthday on April 13. He will also be speaking in a translated public talk at 3:30 p.m. in the UVA Old Cabell Hall Auditorium.
