UVA architecture students present ideas for rebuilding a war-torn Ukrainian city to the U.S. Department of State

The culmination of the 2023 Fall semester at the University of Virginia saw a contingent of students from UVA’s School of Architecture travel to Washington, D.C., to discuss ideas for rebuilding the war-torn eastern Ukrainian city of Izium upon a special invite from the U.S. Department of State.

Together with Professor Suzanne Moomaw, the cohort of 23 students who participated in the school’s Ukraine Green Recovery Lab were delegated to the National Museum of American Diplomacy in order to present their research to State Department officials, other government representatives, and the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova.

Highlighting topography and other similarities between Izium and Charlottesville, the students presented six phases of a proposed redevelopment to those assembled. A new documentary explores the process behind UVA's Memorial to Enslaved Laborers for the first time

A new documentary from local filmmaker Erik Duda exploring the process and impact of the University of Virginia’s Memorial to Enslaved Laborers has been released, providing insights into the creation of one of the most important public monuments in America since the opening of Maya Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982.

Titled The Lives Between the Lines, Duda’s documentary was included as part of this year’s Virginia Film Festival and offers a look into the implementation, design, and eventual construction of the monument, which, unfortunately, had to open in a subdued ceremony last year owing to health concerns related to the pandemic.

UVA researchers develop 3D-printed structures made of soil and seeds

A research team out of the University of Virginia (UVA) has developed a new innovative and sustainable approach to building that utilizes the power of 3D printing to create structures made of soil implanted with seeds.

The team consists of Ji Ma, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at UVA’s School of Engineering and Applied Science; David Carr, a research professor in the university’s Department of Environmental Sciences; Ehsan Baharlou, an assistant professor in the UVA School of Architecture; and recent UVA graduate Spencer Barnes, who earned his Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering. Given the environmental benefits of integrating green spaces with buildings, the researchers wanted to investigate the possibility of developing complex structures made of natural materials themselves.

I am obsessed with resourcefulness. Maybe it’s because I’m from a big family. So when construction business as usual sends debris off to Maine because landfills are closed in Massachusetts, I call that out. I still can’t stand the word “sustainability” — it’s just common sensibility. I’m especially in love with concrete. One person sees it as debris. I see this wonderful patina. I picture who stood on that, I see the work on that surface and think, how beautiful is that?

Bargmann cited Robert Smithson and Eva Hesse as influences and pointed to a road trip as an early turning point in her career, saying that afterward she “launched into a holistic approach to my work.”

The University of Virginia School of Architecture professor and D.I.R.T. (Dump It Right There) Studio founder described her reaction to winning the Oberlander Prize in October, defending its namesake as a paragon of the same causes she herself has pursued within the world of landscape architecture and academia.

“The prize has really made me feel proud, pretty profoundly,” Bargmann told the Times for its new Visionaries series. “It kind of said, ‘Please do this.’ I think the jury did a pretty amazing job looking not necessarily at the number of built works but the impact that someone’s work has had, also in design education, and how willing someone is to take risks. Cornelia Oberlander was a pioneer. She was a risk-taker. It doesn’t happen enough in our discipline.”

Expo of biomaterial structures populates University of Virginia campus, created by architecture students and scholars

The University of Virginia (UVA) campus has become the showground for an array of creative structures built from natural materials. The Biomaterial Building Exposition (Bio-Build Expo for short) was organized by the university’s architecture school and showcases the possibilities of organic, bio-based materials including salvaged lumber and fungal structures.

University of Virginia's School of Architecture names C.L. Bohannon as its first Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The University of Virginia’s School of Architecture has announced the appointment of C.L. Bohannon, PhD, ALSA, as its first Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (AD JEDI), effective July 25, 2022. He joins the faculty as Associate Professor in the Landscape Architecture Department.

Bohannon is currently an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and the Associate Director in the School of Architecture + Design at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He is also the Director of the Community Engagement Lab and Faculty Principal at the Leadership and Social Change Residential College at Virginia Tech.

Bohannon’s research focuses on the relationship between community engagement and design education. Prolific landscape architect Julie Bargmann wins inaugural Oberlander Prize

Pioneering landscape architect Julie Bargmann has been announced as the inaugural winner of the newly-formed Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize.

Known for her work in regenerative landscapes, the University of Virginia faculty member now has the honor of being named as the first-ever recipient of the Prize, which includes a $100,000 cash award.

The award celebrates landscape architects working at the intersection of design and social justice causes. Critic Paul Goldberger said it was about the “importance of the public realm” at a 2019 keynote address announcing the prize, adding that, in his view, attempting to improve public building itself constitutes “a testament to belief in the social good.”

The University of Virginia names Malo A. Hutson as dean of the School of Architecture

Columbia University professor Malo A. Hutson has been appointed as the dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, effective July 1st. Hutson, who is currently a tenured professor and director of the Urban Planning Ph.D. Program in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University as well as the school’s Urban Community and Health Equity Lab, succeeds Ila Berman, who served as dean of the UVA School of Architecture for five years and will return to the school’s faculty.

With a nationally and internationally recognized expertise in the subjects of community development, environmental justice, and urban health, “Hutson brings with him a proven track record of academic leadership, and his collaborations across disciplines in both the academic and professional sphere place him at the nexus of environmental, architectural and urban equity studies,” as said by UVA Today.

It's not every day you come across job ads for positions like university deans, but this week there have been two new searches advertised on Archinect Jobs.

The University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville, is currently seeking a new Dean of the School of Architecture. They are looking for someone "who can advance the mission and to build upon the School’s unique qualities that provide a competitive advantage among Schools of Architecture." As with most positions of this stature, the university envisions hiring an individual accomplished in academia, with experience leading a school of architecture and/or design, however, applicants coming from a professional practice background, who value academic teaching and research will also be considered for the position.

School of Architecture professor to lead University of Virginia Press

Suzanne Morse Moomaw, associate professor of urban and environmental planning at the University of Virginia's School of Architecture, is the new director of the University of Virginia Press.

UVA Today reports that Moomaw has served on the press's board of directors since 2015 and will be on leave for the 2020-21 academic year to pursue the role. She will then begin the search for the press's next director starting in the spring of 2021. Moomaw is taking over for previous director Mark Saunders, who passed away May 19, 2019.

Moomaw's hiring was announced in December and she took the reigns of the publishing house at the start of 2020.

University of Virginia's Rotunda transformed into a planetarium, sharing Thomas Jefferson's original vision for the building

Neal Curtis, Samuel Lemley and Madeline Zehnder conducted some keen literary sleuthing to discover Thomas Jefferson’s original intentions for the Dome Room, and then harnessed modern digital technology to bring the planetarium to life in a way that the University’s founder could not have imagined. “The concave ceiling of the Rotunda,” Jefferson wrote in 1819, “is proposed to be painted sky-blue and spangled with gilt stars in their position and magnitude copied exactly.”

While planning the early stages of the University of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson envisioned a fantastical planetarium for the school's historic Rotunda. In 2019, that vision has been achieved as the Rotunda Planetarium, thanks to three Ph.D students from the school's English department, and a grant from the Jefferson Trust.

In addition to the temporary digital-projection installation, there is a related exhibition — which features books, specimens, and artifacts from the Rotunda’s early history — that is on view through February 18.

Slavery and liberty: A new exhibit explores the Thomas Jefferson paradox

The Chrysler Museum of Art on the University of Virginia campus will put on an exhibit entitled "Thomas Jefferson, Architect: Palladian Models, Democratic Principles, and the Conflict of Ideals."

It looks at the Jefferson's influences and ideas around architecture, including displays of models based on his designs, reports Associated Press (AP). On the one hand, Jefferson was a man who sought to create architecture that symbolized "liberty and democracy," but on the other, he used enslaved Americans to construct the very same structures designed to embody these ideals.

"They helped build everything from Virginia's Statehouse—a precursor to the Capital Building in Washington—to the University of Virginia and Jefferson's home of Monticello," writes AP, speaking of Jefferson's use of slave labor.

Architecture students at UVA honor bicentennial with a digitally fabricated pavilion

Students and faculty from the University of Virginia created a temporary addition to Thomas Jefferson’s vision for a living and learning community. The final product – a series of interlocking arches made of nontoxic, recyclable polypropylene plastic – is very different from the neoclassical style that Thomas Jefferson admired. However, Jefferson, who had a chemistry lab installed in the Rotunda, likely would have been fascinated by the technology used in its production.

The University of Virginia School of Architecture has appointed Bradley Cantrell as the new chair of Landscape Architecture. Currently an associate professor of landscape architectural technology and director of the Master in Landscape Architecture degree program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Cantrell will assume the role June 25, 2017.

Cantrell comes to the University with a rich background in environmental and ecological design and its relationship to emerging technologies. His research investigates the role of digital media and computation in directing an environmental design process that operates as living model of landscape.

Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara have well made their mark in designing highly acclaimed academic buildings around the world. Most recently, the Grafton Architects co-founders were named the recipients of the 2017 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture, the University of Virginia's highest external honor. Currently a tenured full professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, as well as a principal of SCALESHIFT design in Toronto, she will assume the role Aug. 15.
