Get Lectured: University of Arkansas, Spring ‘24

Today, our Get Lectured series continues with a look at the events and lectures taking place in the Spring semester at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design in Fayetteville.

The term begins with a lecture from University of Houston professor Andrew Kudless on February 5, followed by an appearance from Canadian 5468796 architecture co-founder Johanna Hurme on February 26. The school’s FAY AI workshop, featuring presentations from academics Joshua Vermillion, Clay Odom, and Kory Bieg, will also take place from February 5–9 in Vol Walker Hall.

March begins with a lecture from Simon David, the principal of New York’s Office of Strategy + Design (OSD), on March 4. He is followed by Susan Jones, the founder of atelierjones, on March 13. Finally, the month ends when British academic James Binning visits campus to discuss his Turner Prize-winning work through the 14-year-old London-based architectural collective called Assemble on March 25.

Class is back in session, and that means it’s time for a new slate of lectures and events taking place at architecture schools across the country. Today, our Get Lectured series continues with a look at what’s in store this Fall semester at the University of Arkansas’ Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design.

The term began on Monday, September 11, with a lecture from Brooks + Scarpa founders Angela Brooks and Lawrence Scarpa. Events continue on September 25 with another from Henning Larsen’s Signe Kongebro. Mattaforma’s Lindsey Wikstrom will visit campus October 2 to discuss her new book Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, followed by Studio O+A co-founder Primo Orpilla’s presentation on October 9.

Events continue on October 18 with a special appearance from the 2020 Pritzker winner, Yvonne Farrell of Grafton Architects, followed by author David Gissen’s presentation of his new book The Architecture of Disability on October 23. The month concludes on October 30 w...

Fay Jones School student David Sweere awarded 2019 Aydelott Prize for travel research

University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design fifth-year architecture student David Sweere has been awarded the 2019 Aydelott Prize, beating out three other competing Aydelott Travel Award recipients.

The Aydelott Travel Award and Prize have been awarded each year since 2016. The unconventional award program selects four Travel Award winners who are each given $20,000 to visit and analyze four buildings of their choosing, with one student selected from this cohort for the Prize portion of the program. Each student is asked to produce an essay documenting and analyzing their research and these essays are what is judged to determine who is ultimately awarded the Aydelott Prize.

Pritzker-winning Grafton Architects selected for Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design's Center for Design and Materials Innovation

The recent recipients of the 2020 Pritzker Prize, Grafton Architects, have been chosen by the University of Arkansas to partner with Modus Studio to design the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation.

Founders Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara are recognized for their outstanding work in building production and projects responding to urban and social issues. The new center is the duo's first built project in the U.S. In a press statement from the University, Farrell and McNamara share, "We are very excited about building our first building in the United States in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This building helps us think about the future optimistically, where the use of timber with all its possibilities, becomes real, useful, and hopefully loved."

The estimated $16 million design project will be part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design and used as a research center for the University's timber and wood design projects. According to Chris Baribeau, p...

University of Arkansas debuts the largest mass timber building in the U.S.

Boston-based architecture practice Leers Weinzapfel Associates recently completed the construction of the 202,027-square-foot University of Arkansas Adohi Hall, noted to be the "first large-scale mass timber residence hall and living learning setting" as well as the "largest cross laminated timber (CLT) building in the United States" by the practice. For the project, the firm collaborated with Modus Studio (Fayetteville, AR), Mackey Mitchell Architects (St. Louis), and OLIN (Philadelphia) to complete the project.

Winifred E. Newman selected to head UA Fay Jones School's Department of Architecture

Winifred E. Newman will be the next head of the Department of Architecture for the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas, effective July 1. Newman is an associate professor, director of advanced studies and director of the I-CAVE Lab for Applied Visualization in the College of Architecture + the Arts at Florida International University.

Boyer, professor and head of the Department of Landscape Architecture in the Fay Jones School of Architecture, plans to leave the University of Arkansas this summer after 17 years to become the director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University. Peter MacKeith Named Dean of UA's Fay Jones School of Architecture

An architecture professor at a Missouri university has been named the dean of the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. Peter MacKeith, a professor at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, is set to become the UA school's dean, effective July 1.
