Get Lectured: University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Fall '23/Spring '24

Our Get Lectured series provides a useful look at different events and lectures taking place on campuses in North America. Today, we continue with a preview of what’s in store for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture in the Fall and Spring semesters.

The theme for this year’s Hyde Lecture Series is titled ‘Advancing Health: Planning and Designing for Healthful Places.’ The school shares: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, which goes beyond the simple absence of illness. By shaping the places where people live, work and play, planners and designers make profound and long-lasting contributions to the healthfulness of people individually and collectively.”

Events begin October 13 with a lecture from special guest Nader Tehrani. His appearance will be followed by University of Michigan associate professor Robert Adams on October 30, and Michael Grove of Sasaki Associates will follow on November 6.

Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg is announced as the next dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Architecture

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has announced Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg as the next dean of its College of Architecture following a national search that culminated in a three-candidate shortlist.

Van Den Wymelenberg is currently a faculty member at the University of Oregon, where he serves as the director of the School of Architecture and Environment in addition to holding concurrent positions as the associate dean for research for the College of Design and director of the Biology and the Built Environment Center and Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory.

Prior to his experience in Eugene, ’”Van Den Wymelenberg worked as a professor at the University of Idaho Boise, where he also founded the school's Integrated Design Lab. He has been credited with securing more than $40 million in research funding related to indoor environmental quality since 2004 and is the author of three books and over 100 peer-reviewed articles, according to a press release from the university.

This week, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln announced its three finalist candidates for its open College of Architecture dean position.

The University of Oregon’s director for the School of Architecture and Environment, Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg; Michigan State University’s School of Planning, Design, and Construction director Ming-Han Li; and the Lawrence Technological Institute’s College of Architecture and Design Dean Karl Daubmann are all in the running to replace Katherine Ankerson, who is stepping into her new role as the University's executive vice chancellor.

Kevin Van Den Wymelenberg is the founder of the influential Institute for Health in the Built Environment and currently directs the University of Oregon’s Biology and the Built Environment center as well as the school’s Energy Studies in Buildings Laboratory. Sarah Deyong named UNL Architecture Program Director

Sarah Deyong, associate professor at Texas A&M University, has accepted the appointment of Architecture Program director with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Architecture. Deyong will assume her position with the college July 1st. [...] Deyong is known internationally for her research focused on the post-WWII period to the present, underscoring the symbiotic relationship between HTC and design practice.

"Today, we find ourselves in a dynamic situation, with new technologies and digital tools, for example," Deyong laid out the focus of her directorship. "The utility of history and theory is that it brings the longer, canonical perspective of how we define ourselves into play. We learn from both failures and successes. Since architecture is inherently collaborative, we best prepare our students for the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary practice when we define ourselves as a discipline with design at its core."

Katherine Ankerson named dean of UNL College of Architecture

Katherine Ankerson, professor and head of the Department of Interior Architecture and Product Design at Kansas State University, has accepted appointment as dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture. [...] Ankerson, who was a professor and associate dean in the UNL architecture college from 1996 to 2011 before her tenure at Kansas State, will assume the dean's post July 1.

Scott Killinger named interim dean of UNL's College of Architecture

Scott Killinger was named interim dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Architecture, the university said Thursday. [...] Killinger, who replaces interim dean Kim Wilson, will also be responsible for helping UNL find a permanent dean of the College of Architecture. The college has been without a permanent dean since Wayne Drummond left the post in 2011.

Merging the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture with another college is a disaster waiting to happen, a handful of architects said Friday. They were attending the NU Board of Regents meeting to protest plans to merge the architecture program with the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. A merger could water down the quality of the architecture program and diminish the respect it commands, the architects told the board.
