Studio Gang completes first French project behind cylindrical stone facade

Studio Gang has completed its first project in France: the University of Chicago John W. Boyer Center in Paris. Located in the city’s 13th arrondissement, the new academic hub aims to energize the local neighborhood while integrating into the “urban and intellectual fabric of the city.”

Set on a corner site on Paris’s Left Bank, an area known for research and higher education, the center is the focal point of a new mixed-use development that includes residential buildings designed by PARC Architectes. The scheme’s signature brise soleil façade is comprised of 900 cylindrical stone batons, which filter light based on the interior function, offering privacy in study spaces while revealing public areas. Clad in Lutetian limestone, the batons echo Chicago’s main campus while rooting the building in Paris’s architectural heritage.

Studio Gang unveils a new 'creative ecosystem' for the California College of the Arts in San Francisco

The wait is over for followers of Studio Gang’s campus expansion for the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. The project, which was first announced in late 2016, establishes an overlapping "creative ecosystem" inside the footprint of the school's existing campus located in the heart of the city’s Design District.

The program adds a total of 82,305 square feet of space in the form of two hybrid mass timber pavilions set on top of a concrete slab base and sheltering both a makers yard area and other conditioned outdoor spaces used for fabricating and multidisciplinary design education.

The first, 24,300-square-foot Hooper Pavilion includes 48 art studios worth a total of 5,300 square feet. Along with those, there is a new 2,100-square-foot gallery for the exhibition students’ work, small lounge, another classroom space, and a 1,100-square-foot lecture hall with seating for up to 60 people.

Today marks the long-awaited debut of Studio Gang’s Populus hotel project in Denver. The 265-room design is being promoted as the first ‘carbon-positive’ hotel development in the United States and features a combination of highly sustainable building materials and offsetting strategies that target a LEED Gold certification.

The firm’s first project in Colorado precedes their involvement on the Phase 1 redevelopment of the adjacent Civic Center Park. It is designed, as its name suggests, to mirror the natural processes of endemic Aspen trees (aka Populus tremuloides) with a textured facade featuring an arrangement of scalloped windows that contribute passive shading while channeling rainwater with widths tailored to the public and private spaces contained within.

Can the 'first carbon-positive hotel in the U.S.' claims of the Studio Gang-designed Populus be validated?

Populus goes one step further in its boast of being 'carbon positive', not just offsetting the hotel’s carbon footprint but actually taking out far more carbon than it puts in – a promise few businesses would dare to make, for both financial and publicity reasons. As a term, however, 'carbon positive' can be linguistically confusing [...] and with no clear definition of what 'carbon positive' means, there are no metrics by which to determine its validity.

The project, first announced in February 2021, has since garnered skepticism amidst its developer Urban Villages' claims of being a first-of-its-kind carbon-positive American design in the typology. The true sustainability of the firm’s 2009 Aqua Tower in Chicago has been scrutinized in the past by online commenters.

The 265-room Populus, with its blinking 'lids' fenestration, opens for the first time on October 15th.

Studio Gang's Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center breaks ground in the Hudson Valley

Work on the first-ever LEED Platinum theater in the United States has commenced in New York’s Hudson River Valley. By summer 2026, the new 14,850-square-foot permanent home for the Hudson Valley Shakespeare company from Studio Gang, the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center, will welcome guests to open air performances on its donated 98-acre campus in Garrison. Nelson Byrd Woltz is included for the landscape program of the surrounding site, which had been previously been used as a golf course.

Studio Gang transforms former warehouse space into new home for the University of Kentucky's College of Design

The new home for the College of Design at the University of Kentucky (CoD) has been inaugurated after a two-year project led by Studio Gang.

Their makeover of the Gray Design Building turned a former tobacco warehouse at the edge of campus into a new hub for learning and collaboration. It is the first to consolidate space for all four CoD departments and the department of landscape architecture under one roof since 1965.

The adaptive reuse project provided a unique teaching opportunity for students, retaining the existing masonry walls, foundation, timber columns and beams, and steel trusses used in the former Reynolds Building's original 1917 construction.

Studio Gang’s completed Verde mixed-use tower is turning heads in San Francisco. The latest addition to the skyline of Mission Rock, which recently includes MVRDV’s The Canyon, is a 23-story design that features 254 apartments with a competitive amenities suite and ground-floor retail and commercial spaces.

“For Verde, we wanted to create spaces where residents could connect with each other while feeling embraced by the natural beauty of San Francisco,” says Jeanne Gang. “The tower’s floorplates are carved back at the corners to create outdoor terraces that are unique across each floor. These terraces are oriented to maximize sunlight and protect from the wind while providing residents views of the surrounding city and San Francisco Bay. From the street, the alternating carved terraces give the building a rhythmic play of light.”

Studio Gang’s restoration of the popular Pavilion structure at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is now complete. The photogenic gathering space located along the Zoo’s Nature Boardwalk was completed in 2010 and recently received a makeover replete with new fiberglass dome components and a revitalized wooden lattice-like support structure.

Studio Gang is currently hiring for a Licensed Interior Designer on Archinect Jobs and was in the running for the public vote for the AIA Chicago's 2024 Lerch Bates People's Choice Awards contest, the winners for which are expected to be announced on September 5th.

Studio Gang-designed agricultural education center in Brooklyn breaks ground

Last weekend, the Studio Gang-designed Marlboro Agricultural Education Center (MAEC) broke ground in Brooklyn’s Gravesend neighborhood. The new 9,900-square-foot, $18.2 million project transforms the site of the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Marlboro Houses into an education, job training, nutrition and urban agriculture hub.

The Center is being delivered as part of the New York City Department of Design and Construction’s Design-Build program. It aims to build on efforts to strengthen food autonomy and security in underserved neighborhoods. It also strives to empower young adults in these communities to engage with local, sustainable food production.

Studio Gang has revealed plans for the new home of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in Upstate New York.

Located in the town of Garrison, the 13,850-square-foot performing arts space is set to become the first-ever LEED Platinum theater design in the United States when it is completed.

Nelson Byrd Woltz will provide landscaping for the site, a 98-acre former golf course that was donated to the company in 2020. Anchored by an open-air theater, the design frames the surrounding natural landscape to allow for actors to emerge from the topography.

Harvard's new Enterprise Research Campus breaks ground in Boston

A master plan project at Harvard University from Studio Gang, Henning Larsen, SCAPE, and Utile has begun construction in the Boston neighborhood of Allston.

The 36-acre Enterprise Research Campus (or ERC) will coalesce an area across the Charles River from the Ivy League campus into a new multi-use innovation district with designs from MVRDV, Moody Nolan, and Marlon Blackwell, in addition to the university's first above-ground mass timber structures from Studio Gang.

Once complete, its initial two phases will entail 14 acres of redeveloped land reserved for offices, labs, conference center, hotel, residential component, and open green space.

Studio Gang and SCAPE have shared new photos following the completion of work on their $61 million Tom Lee Park redevelopment project in Memphis, Tennessee.

The 31-acre riverfront space puts Memphis squarely in league with a host of contemporary restorative urban green space projects slated for other major American cities, including San Francisco's new Presidio Tunnel Tops and the partially completed Freshkills Park in Staten Island.

Its ecological restoration work and accessibility to the residents of one of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods make it an instant industry standard-bearer. Studio Gang to lead Denver's Civic Center Next 100 Phase 1 implementation

Studio Gang has been selected to lead the Phase 1 Implementation of Denver’s Civic Center Next 100 revitalization plan targeted at its Greek Theater and Central Promenade along 14th Avenue.

The firm received a $2.8 million design contract for the project and was chosen based on an approach that was “rooted in a community-centered process [and] respects the historic aspects of the park while bringing innovative architectural design,” according to a press announcement.

The project is being delivered with extensive community and stakeholder engagement. The Concept Design also calls for improvements to the Central Gathering Space and Bannock Street between Colfax Avenue and 14th Avenue. Denver’s Mayor Mike Johnston said it will prepare the space for “the next 100 years.”

Former Chicago Transportation Commissioner Gia Biagi joins Studio Gang in new planning role

While the city’s top transportation post remains vacant, the department’s respected former commissioner has landed a leadership post at the award-winning Chicago architecture firm Studio Gang. Gia Biagi will join Studio Gang as Principal of Urbanism, the firm announced Thursday. Biagi told the Sun-Times that under the newly-created role, she’ll lead Studio Gang’s planning and urban design work nationally.

Biagi told the Sun-Times architecture critic, Lee Bey, her work will help Studio Gang’s efforts to shape “how we think about cities, how we revitalize them, and how that connects to other important systems, whether that’s emphasizing ecology or looking at the important public policy questions on the ground.” She will leverage further experience with the Chicago Park District and the Department of Planning and Development in the execution of her duties.

The Clinton Foundation has announced that Studio Gang will design a “major expansion” to the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. The proposed expansion, details of which will be revealed next year, will seek to “help the Clinton Center fulfill its mission to engage and educate people about President Bill Clinton’s lifetime commitment to advancing opportunity for everybody.”

Studio Gang to design new sustainability commons at Stanford

A new project led by Studio Gang will deliver Stanford University a home for the recently-established Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, called Stanford Sustainability Commons, at a site located on the western half of the school’s Palo Alto, California campus.

New York-based practices SCAPE and atelier ten will join the firm for the design of the Commons, which aims to help consolidate a group of interrelated academic disciplines in the hopes of enabling a “thriving habitat supporting the region’s larger network of living things.”

Studio Gang has completed work on the $465 million new Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Coinciding with the official public opening today, the museum has shared first photos of the project, showcasing the 230,000-square-foot wing that replaces several outdated small buildings with new education and exhibition spaces, a theater, storage, laboratories, insectarium, and butterfly vivarium.

The Studio Gang-designed Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation is approaching completion in New York. The scheme has been designed to improve the functionality and visitor experience of the museum campus, creating a new accessible entrance at Columbus Avenue. The building forms thirty connections with ten different buildings, while also providing new exhibition, education, collections, and research spaces. A new, two-tower mixed-use scheme from Studio Gang has been delivered in Amsterdam, representing a first for the firm on the continent as it looks to grow outside of the American market with recent expansions into Canada and now the EU.

The 297,170-square-foot Q Residences are meant to address the capital region’s considerable housing needs with a scheme that adds 248 total residences located in the center of Buitenveldert – one of the last “garden cities” constructed in Amsterdam following the conclusion of World War II.

Construction begins on Studio Gang's Parcel F tower, the final piece of San Francisco's Mission Rock development

Construction of Studio Gang’s planned Parcel F contribution to the Mission Rock development is officially underway in San Francisco, filling in the final puzzle piece of a 28-acre mixed-use scheme led by Tishman Speyer and the local Major League Baseball affiliate San Francisco Giants.

The $2.5 billion plan’s latest building contributes 97 new below-market apartments to the project’s 1,200 unit total. At 23 stories, it is the same height as Mission Rock’s other MVRDV-designed residential tower, The Canyon. The picture is getting clearer for the Studio Gang-envisioned new, unified home for the University of Kentucky's College of Design after final renderings and a project timeline were just revealed.

Construction has begun on the Populus Hotel in Denver, Colorado. Designed by Studio Gang, the 13-story, 265-room hotel is described by the team as “the first carbon-positive hotel in the United States,” and the first Studio Gang project to be built in Colorado.

According to the architects, the scheme’s distinctive façade was informed by the patterns found in Colorado’s native Aspen tree, the Populus Tremuloides. The façade is defined by “lids” extending out over each window, which offer passive shading and channel rainwater away from the windows.

The hotel design was first revealed on Archinect in February 2021 and received mostly skeptical responses from our readers.

Studio Gang's first Canadian project offers 45 stories of upscale living

Studio Gang’s first foray north of the border has produced a noteworthy new design in the form of Toronto’s One Delisle.

The residential tower is scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will feature a collection of penthouses on the upper three floors each spanning either one-half or one-third of the dynamic, 16-sided facade.

The studio drew its inspiration for the distinctive penthouse terraces from a traditional German beach chair design called a Strandkorb. Each outdoor space is protected by the building’s unique architecture, allowing for a year-round experience in tune with the local climate and lifestyle.

On the interior, each unit features a natural stone fireplace and wine cabinets that stand out among the open floor plan and sleek island-centered kitchen.

Vancouver-based developer Westbank has unveiled plans for a collection of mixed-use projects in downtown San Jose, California. In January, Archinect previously reported on the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) and its plans to open in May 2022. The 133,000-square-foot Museum is designed by Studio Gang in collaboration with landscape architecture firm SCAPE and Little Rock-based Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects. While initial renders of the new Museum's design didn't provide specifics to the Museum's distinct roof design, recent construction images showcase a signature roof design that flows, "blossoming out to the north and south," as described by the firm. "Spanning the length of the building, the roofline connects new construction and renovated spaces and establishes AMFA's new architectural identity."

Studio Gang envisions a tree-inspired mixed-use project to add to Denver's skyline

Inspired by the area's natural landscapes and environment, Studio Gang reveals the latest visuals for their most recent mix-used project Populus. Located in Denver, along the city's historic Civic Center Park, the project pulls reference from the aspen tree by using its highly recognizable "eye-shaped" marked bark to design its facade, distinct building color, and vertical scalloped exterior.

The 13 stories tall building will house forty micro-apartments as well as 250 hotel rooms. Studio Gang collaborated with Denver-based developer Urban Villages. With the aspen tree as its visual muse, it's hard not to see the resemblance. According to the studio, the project's name "Populus" was also pulled from the scientific classification of the aspen tree populus tremuloides.

Studio Gang-designed Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, formerly Arkansas Arts Center, to open in 2022

The Arkansas Arts Center has a new name: the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Leaders gathered [...] provide an update on its facility, which is being renovated and expanded. [...] Designs for the additional $14 million in funds, Ramirez said, include new plans for 15% more gallery space than initially planned, added programming and “transforming even more of MacArthur Park into landscape space designed to host a variety or programs and events.”

A new Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts building, designed by Studio Gang with landscape architects SCAPE and Little Rock-based Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects, is already under construction in Little Rock's MacArthur Park.

"The central gesture of the new Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts — a folded, thin-plate structure running through the museum complex — lends AMFA a highly visible new architectural identity and connect its diverse programing spaces," explains the project description.

"This roofline spans the length of the museum from north to south, blossoming toward downtown Little Rock at the north and Historic MacArthur Park to the south. In concert with new construction, the design once again reveals the original 1937 limestone facade of the Museum of Fine Arts, a precursor to AMFA, as the main north entrance."

Henning Larsen, Snøhetta, and Studio Gang unveil concepts for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library

In the final phases of the design competition for the design of the anticipated Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, the Foundation of the same name has selected three finalists: Henning Larsen, Snøhetta, and Studio Gang. The top three were chosen from amongst 12 other practices that responded to the RFQ made public by the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation.

The project will reside in the the North Dakotan Badlands where Roosevelt first set out to following the death of his wife and mother. The Badlands is where a young Roosevelt found refuge and healing, pursuing what he later called the "strenuous life." The mission of the library is "to explore Theodore Roosevelt's life, legacy, and enduring relevance." The submissions by each of the three finalists uniquely capture this lasting legacy.
