Zoning and craft in Montreal's 'Plexes'

Anyone who has visited or lived in Montreal has seen an impressive variety of external staircases that decorate the homes of the Canadian city’s historic neighborhoods. Beyond the range of architectural styles that adorn the facades and interiors of this local type, the Plex is mostly defined by these acrobatic outdoor stairs, which contort themselves to link the two, three, and even four levels of separate apartments to the street. Built in the 19th and early 20th century for multiple income levels, the plexes ranged from simple to ornate, though many housed large working-class families.

“Once known for affordability, Montreal has now joined Canada’s real-estate frenzy,” writes Sandrine Rastello of Bloomberg. Today, plexes are increasingly sought after as wealthy urbanites renovate and update, and architects and developers build contemporary interpretations of the form with up to six levels.

Nendo-designed 'Stairway House' offers connected living for three generations

Japanese-based firm Nendo has completed a novel three-story two-family home in Tokyo. With three generations of the same family sharing the space, the living quarters for the older couple is situated on the 1st floor, while the 2nd and 3rd levels house the younger couple and their child.

Spanning from the front yard ground level to the peak of the third floor is an expansive "stairway-like" structure that penetrates through the building. Offering separation with a degree of preserved connectedness.

Inside the stairway are usable spaces such as bathrooms and an actual usable staircase. Concrete was used for the exterior steps while steel makes up the interior steps.

The south elevation, which contains the protruding stairway, offers full-height glazing, allowing natural daylight into the home while further solidifying the continuous effect of the extruded steps.

Need some troll-ish ideas for designing your next staircase? From vertigo-inducing carpet to confusing angles to optical illusions no one asked for, this Twitter thread — aptly titled "Stairs designed by a serial killer" — might spark some inspiration, if not a chuckle or a scoff.

How did architect Morris Lapidus' 'Stairs to Nowhere' transform stepped seating?

The visually ascending nature of stairs often creates two initial reactions, amazement or hesitation. In a recent piece by the Washington Post writer Maura Judkis unpacks the "stairs to nowhere" design concept. Initially coined by architect Morris Lapidus after his signature staircase for the famed Miami Fontainebleau hotel, the design has transformed into an interior detail that's taken over offices, public areas, and universities.

Judkis shares that this style of stairs have "become such Instagram magnets, though architects insist they're not designed with that in mind." Iconic stairs can be found all over the globe, representing structures of symbolism as well as functionality. However, the humble stair has also become a casual gathering hub for people to talk, work, and give presentations.

Battle over "stramp" accessibility upgrades in British Columbia takes shape

A battle over proposed design and safety upgrades to an out-of-compliance "stramp" design by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson from the 1970s is taking shape in British Columbia, Canada.

Simon Scott, the director of Erickson's Foundation, said of the late architect: "He wanted to make public spaces accessible and enjoyable," according to CBC. Erickson's Robinson Square steps, however, have been deemed unsafe.

"The ramp that zigzags across the steps at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver will not be modified to address accessibility concerns because of the 'architectural significance of the site,'" reports CBC. Arnold Cheng, an accessibility consultant brought in to survey the steps has countered this reasoning to CBC by pointing out that precious historical works of architecture, such as the Louvre in Paris, have undergone many design changes over the years.

This Chinese bookstore recalls ancient stepwells

Shangai-based architecture firm X+Living has just completed their most recent - and possibly most beguiling - bookstore in the city of Chongqing, China. Zhongshuge, a Chinese bookstore chain known for its bold interior design, commissioned X+Living to develop their newest shop with mesmerizing proportions, details and materiality.

The layout of the stairs in the main room recalls the stepwells of ancient India designed for water collection and access, while the full ceiling mirror effectively doubles the sensation of movement throughout the space when in use. The effect is also carried throughout the store's other, smaller spaces, which feature bright pink floors and whimsically-shaped bookshelves (below).

Renderings of the Dubai Steps revealed

Five hundred steps, 25 stories, and 100 meters of height make up the Dubai Steps, as well as what appears to be a steely reflective outer casing with circular perforations. An aesthetic cross between the spinal column of a terminator and the euphoric ascendance of MVRDV's Rotterdam stair installation, the Dubai Steps appear to terminate in a large open-air platform from which climbers can take in the rapid development of the desert city that surrounds them.

Elaborately patterned lattices host vegetation and what appear to be shaded alcoves on each landing, which should hopefully mitigate what will undoubtedly be a physically exhausting climb in one of the world's hottest climates. It's prime real estate for bottled water vendors...

What does a $1 million dollar staircase look like?

The new building design introduced massive 40 foot sliding glass doors that could one day turn that store into an iCar showroom if they wanted to. The estimated breakdown of the costs started with the shell of the building costing Apple $19 million. Some of the other costs included $1 million on the staircase alone. If there's 30 stairs that $33,333 per stair.

While Norman Foster's "spaceship" design for the Apple Campus has attracted its own share of critiques for possibly reviving older corporate design models, this newly refurbished Apple Store appears to be heading for a far more multi-faceted (and luxurious) future. In an era where many prefer to order online than trek in person, must a brick and mortar store necessarily be flashier to attract and maintain a customer base?

That’s because those stairs have literally taken center stage in the $75 million Milken Institute School of Public Health — designed by Boston-based Payette Architects and D.C.-based Ayers Saint Gross Architects [...] one of the first things visitors see upon entering the 115,000 square-foot building are the staircases winding every which way up a seven-story atrium.
