The contest, which is presented by the London-based magazine The Fence, was revived for 2024 after a six-year hiatus following BDP’s Redrock Stockport "victory" in 2018.

What can be said about this monstrosity? The magazine describes: "This mass-scale redevelopment demolished a century of businesses and buildings, replacing them with sheet-metal etchings of the cinemas and bars that once stood. Behind that façade, much like everything else in Liverpool, is a 412-bed student accommodation block and a 101-room Premier Inn hotel — two new additions that the city’s residents have never asked for or benefited from."

The outcome might play into the hands of advocates pushing leaders to save the century-old Marks & Spencer department store on Oxford Street in London, a ca...

Hardly a year goes by without a slab of PBSA featuring on the Carbuncle Cup shortlist for the ugliest UK building. The judges described the scheme as "a hideous melange of materials, forms and colours... Lincoln Plaza is the type of project that gives high-rise housing a bad name". Four of the nominees featured facades composed of offset geometrical patterns, utterly confusing to the eye at odds with the openings on their facades. It seems that the once fashionable patchwork quilt approach to facade design has worn thin.

However, there is a certain amount of discomfort surrounding the Carbuncle Cup. With the position of architects and their authority in the construction industry being ever challenged, is it productive to have an award of shame singling out architects? In its short history, the 37-storey office tower has melted parked cars and critics have compared its three-storey roof garden to an airport terminal.
Thomas Lane, who runs the awards, said the carbuncle "crashes into London's skyline like an unwelcome party guest".

Previously:

Walkie Talkie Tower summons the elements again — this time it's wind!

'Walkie Scorchie’ building given permanent sunshade

Rafael Viñoly-designed "Walkie Talkie" skyscraper melts car with light reflections

'Prison-like' student housing wins Carbuncle Cup for Britain's worst building of the year
