Goff Fest kicks off in Tulsa honoring the life of its late architectural native son

The living memory of one of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s biggest drivers of the city’s noteworthy contributions to the visual landscape of 20th-century America is getting its due this weekend in an awesome way.

Goff Fest is about to descend on one of the city’s most important historic landmarks. The Tulsa Club Hotel will host the inaugural edition of a four-day festival honoring the life, work, and legacy of its architect, the late Bruce Goff.

Goff was an architectural prodigy who went on to become one of the Midwest’s most prominent practitioners of Modernism. Most of his extant early buildings were realized in the Tulsa metropolitan area, including the Boston Avenue Methodist Church and Riverside Studio, which are both on the National Register of Historic Places.

London's Open House launches new collection of card models to make at home

Open House, the volunteer-led festival of London's urban landscape, has created a collection of card models of iconic London buildings. The collection is one of a number of new "virus-proof" initiatives celebrating London's architecture during the pandemic.

There are a total of sixteen card models, which can be ordered online and made at home. Some of the structures included are St Paul's Cathedral, Kew Gardens Palm House, and the Hoover Building. Every model kit comes with two sets of printed and pre-creased sheets to assemble the building along with information about the structure and its architectural history.

"For Open House 2020, we’ve created a program of in-person events all across the city but we wanted to create something for families and individuals who can’t visit the festival in person too," said Hafsa Adan, Assistant Curator of Open House 2020 in a statement. "For those who can’t get out and about in London this weekend, we’re bringing the skyline to them instead."

Oban Festival of Architecture showcases Scottish innovation

An exhibition of Scottish architecture held as part of a major festival in Italy is to be staged for the first time in Scotland. Prospect North, one of three architecture exhibitions being staged in Oban, was first shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale. It explores the stories of 15 Scots communities who have used design and architecture to make a difference.

"Archtober is a collaborative initiative of the AIA New York Chapter, the Center for Architecture, and over fifty other organizations focused on the built environment," says Cynthia Kracauer, AIA New York managing director. "The flagship program is the Building of the Day, one for each of the thirty-one days of October."

Today the AIA New York is hosting a "Summer Live Tweet" event at 12:00 noon at the Public Theater in New York City's Astor Place to launch Archtober, the monthlong, citywide design festival.

The host, AIA New York, has offered free ice cream from Coolhaus for anyone who tweets the event.

The reason the event is at The Public Theater is that it's the first announced "Building of the Day" for Archtober, set for a ticketed tour on October 1, the festival's first day.

What's the point of architecture and design festivals?

From Beijing to Belgrade, the world is inundated with design fairs. But what exactly are they for? "Are festivals and biennales dynamic catalysts to discuss and celebrate the city and architectural culture? Or are they calculated devices of tourism and industrial promotion?" While many such initiatives may have set out with good intentions to be the former, it seems that commercial expedients are increasingly forcing them to become the latter.

Architecture critic Oliver Wainwright asks the question and gets to the bottom line of what these things are about.
