<img src="https://archinect.gumlet.io/uploads/2d/2d208215c78eea00548f641f6aaf270b.jpg?fit=crop&auto=compress%2Cformat&enlarge=true&w=1200" border="0" /><p><a href="https://archinect.com/snohetta" target="_blank">Snøhetta</a> has completed work on their $35 million redesign of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/1683788/blanton-museum-of-art" target="_blank">The Blanton Museum of Art </a>grounds for the <a href="https://archinect.com/utsoa" target="_blank">University of Texas at Austin</a>. </p>
<p>The debut of the New Ground Initiative comes at the end of a three-year revitalization that saw the Blanton continuously operate during construction. The 200,000-square-foot campus now has a greater permanent presence as the gateway between the university and city of <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/13326/austin" target="_blank">Austin</a> thanks to public art installations and key improvements to the existing landscape design and architecture.</p>

<p>Principal and co-founder <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/124520/craig-dykers" target="_blank">Craig Dykers,</a> Managing Director <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/124521/elaine-molinar" target="_blank">Elaine Molinar</a>, and Director <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-newman-48467111/" target="_blank">John Newman</a>, each School of Architecture graduates from the late-1980s, collaborated to enact a new canopy-like intervention that’s meant as a centerpiece to the museum’s $35 million <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/150245253/blanton-museum-of-art-sn-hetta-designed-new-grounds-initiative-unveiled" target="_blank">Blanton New Grounds</a> initiative.</p>

<p>Addington has served in the role <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/149994098/michelle-addington-to-serve-as-the-dean-of-the-school-of-architecture-at-the-university-of-texas-at-austin" target="_blank">since 2017</a> and is considered an expert in the field of sustainability studies, holding previous academic appointments at <a href="https://archinect.com/yale" target="_blank">Yale</a> and the <a href="https://archinect.com/harvard" target="_blank">Harvard GSD</a> before joining UTSOA. Her efforts to spearhead a range of initiatives resulted in the successful hiring/mentoring of award-winning professors, enhanced collaboration between academia and professional practice, the expansion of the school’s <a href="https://archinect.com/news/article/149967743/ut-austin-s-architecture-school-begins-new-initiative-focused-on-race-gender-and-the-american-built-environment" target="_blank">Race and Gender in the Built Environment Initiative</a>, and an increased research output among faculty members. </p>

The money will be used to reimagine how students learn about <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/43645/materials" target="_blank">materials</a> by reframing the Materials Lab’s existing collection to better highlight <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/4450/sustainability" target="_blank">sustainable</a> products. </p>
<p>Beginning this fall, two graduate students and one undergraduate interior design student will work closely with Jen Wong, Lecturer and Director of the Materials Lab, to restructure the initiative’s circulating library and digital databases. Launched last fall by scholars Anna Livia Brand and Andrea Roberts, the ongoing initiative fosters teaching and research on race and gender-related issues in U.S. cities, and aims to facilitate diversity among design and planning professionals and students. Ledesma and Solis will replace Brand and Roberts for the upcoming 2017-18 academic year.</p>
<p>Ledesma, who is currently a lecturer at UTSOA, will join the school as a 2017-18 fellow. Her research focuses on understanding development and the evolution of the smart, green, and just 21st century city, with consideration to the cultural landscapes of immigrant populations and micro-economies. She acquired a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Science from <a href="http://archinect.com/schools/cover/2977682/texas-a-m-university" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Texas A&M University</a>.</p>

Arriving from Yale School of Architecture, where she held the title of the Hines Professor of Sustainable Design, Addington will start her deanship on July 1, holding the Henry M. Rockwell Chair in Architecture.</p>
<p>Addington was educated as both an engineer and an architect and has previously taught at Harvard University. Additionally, she worked previously at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center as well as an engineer and manager at DuPont. She replaces Elizabeth Danze, who served as interim dean since July 2016.</p>

This isn't sitting well with many members of the public university system, as educators and administrators are now tasked with regulating the presence of guns inside studios and classrooms, and fear that such a law will scare people away from the school (not to mention the obvious safety concerns).</p><p>Dean of the architecture school at UT-Austin, Frederick "Fritz" Steiner, has been critical of the law from its inception, and faced with having to enforce it as campus policy, was prompted to <a href="http://archinect.com/news/article/149042568/dean-frederick-steiner-leaves-ut-austin-for-penn-design-due-to-new-campus-carry-gun-law" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">leave the school for the deanship at PennDesign</a>.</p><p>While not the sole reason for his resignation, Steiner is adamant that such a law is simply not good for architecture education and studio culture, and joins us on the podcast to discuss.</p><p>Listen to episode 55 of <a href="http://archinect.com/sessions" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><strong>Archi...</strong></a></p>

The "Norman Bel Geddes: I Have Seen the Future" exhibition will open at the <a href="http://mcny.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Museum of the City of New York</a> starting Oct. 16. Presented by MCNY and the <a href="http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/%E2%80%8E" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin</a>, it will be the first major exhibition to explore the life and multi-faceted career of the man whose futuristic designs shaped the image of modern America during the early half of the 20th century.<br><br>
This event is also in promotion through <a href="http://archtober.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Archtober</a>, a festival of architectural and design programs, exhibitions, and activities happening throughout New York City in the month of October.<br><br><img alt="" src="http://cdn.archinect.net/images/514x/jk/jki21rnv0lch7kck.jpg" title=""><br><br>
Curated by MCNY's Donald Albrecht (Curator of Architecture and Design), the five-part exhibition will begin with Bel Geddes' birth in 1893 and the early stages of his creativity, then delve into his prime decades from the 1920s-1940s, and finally end with his post-war-period works until his death in 1958.</p>
