They say the colloquial square footage "horse" has "already left the barn," adding the caveat that the typical American home size has increased by 150% between 1980 and 2018. </p>
<p>Some other choice takeaways include <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/81114/paul-goldberger" target="_blank">Paul Goldberger</a> telling a Hamptons community meeting in May: "We want to be East Hampton, not Levittown-By-the-Sea." (The growth of estates there began back in the Gilded Age, however.) Zoning regulations in wealthy enclaves such as this tend to focus on a design's aesthetic features and proportions relative to its lot size. The phenomenon of "Iceberg Houses," e.g., where much of the home expands below grade, is another area of scrutiny as more scrupulous planning ordinances begin to take hold. </p>

Housed in a former horse stable dating back to the 1920s, the scheme will host artists as part of the Edward F. Albee Foundation.</p>

TenBerke’s <a href="https://archinect.com/news/tag/6765/renovation" target="_blank">rehabilitation</a> of the 3,300-square-foot structure will feature a shared library space that houses many of Albee’s own books and records and renovated sleeping quarters that offer each artist in residence a bedroom and private bathroom.</p>

<p>The Foundation is housed in the former Rogers Memorial Library <a href="https://www.27east.com/arts/peter-marino-announces-purchase-of-former-rogers-memorial-library-building-and-intent-to-open-museum-there-1330469/" target="_blank">purchased in 2018</a> from the town of Southampton. The library was the former home of the Parrish Art Museum and was being rented by decor retailer One Kings Lane before the sale.</p>
<p><a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/20628155/peter-marino-architect" target="_blank">Marino</a> was able to overhaul the 126-year-old structure originally designed by R.H. Robertson, carefully restoring the 8,000-square-foot space that retained some of its original elements such as its Gothic towers and porcelain-tiled first-floor mantel. <p>The Bioscleave House sits amongst exclusive real estate in the Hamptons and was the planned home of a pair of artists who together formed an entity now called the <a href="https://www.artnews.com/art-news/artists/the-legacy-of-the-radically-experimental-arakawa-heads-to-gagosian-7697/" target="_blank">Reversible Destiny Foundation</a> in 1988. </p>
<p><a href="https://archinect.com/firms/cover/2965/arakawa-gins" target="_blank">Arakawa and Madeline Gin</a> were able to complete the house as an extension of an A-frame Carl Koch design from 1964 present at the one-acre site. The couple added two bedrooms, a bathroom and a sunken kitchen to the 2,700 square foot home they painted <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/03/garden/03destiny.html" target="_blank">52 different colors</a> at a cost of over $2 million. <br></p>

The building is clad in deep gray, slatted Accoya wood, which works to highlight the roof’s dynamic edges and arcs. Its exterior wood cladding and wood roof cladding was designed and manufactured by <a href="https://resawntimberco.com/project/butter-lane-ikigai-charred-fsc-certified-accoya-wood/" target="_blank">reSAWN TIMBER co.</a><br></p>

Two tours of the center, a former Methodist church built in 1832, will be offered daily, Thursday through Monday.</p></em><br /><br /><p>After housing the Methodist Church of Sag Harbor from the early eighteen-hundreds until 2008, the historic structure was recently renovated by New York firm <a href="https://archinect.com/skolnick" target="_blank">SKOLNICK Architecture + Design Partnership</a>. The 12,000-square-foot adaptive reuse intervention created flexible spaces for exhibition as well as making, a resource library, a public garden, and on-site accommodations for an artist-in-residence program.</p>
