Lippert founded the Press while still a student at the Princeton University School of Architecture in 1981. He was instrumental in publishing Steven Holl’s seminal 1989 manifesto Anchoring, which launched the architect’s name into the mainstream and continues to be considered one of the most fundamental design texts of the past half-century.

Very sorry to hear about the death of Kevin Lippert, founder of Princeton Architectural Press. Though I did not work with Kevin directly on the two books I did with PAP, his impact on those projects was clearly felt. pic.twitter.com/HTJauCCKvl
— Blair Kamin (@BlairKamin) March 30, 2022

This latest issue features a diverse range of contributions by significant architectural thinkers and practitioners that tackle questions surrounding the norms of the discipline and its normative functions. The issue aims to denormalize and denaturalize what we take for givens in the discipline and profession: primarily, its institutionalized social and labor relations, and their misogynistic, racist, corrupt, and oppressive character. At the same time, it looks at the ways in which architecture presumes—and, in turn, produces—a normative subject with a normative body. And it imagines alternatives through a series of contemporary case studies.

We take for a given that architecture has to operate the way it already does — but it doesn’t. What appears as natural is in fact constructed, and has mutated dramatically through time. “Architecture,” that is, refers not just to the practice of building but also to a set of institutionalized social and labor relations, which are often misogynistic, racist, corrupt, and oppressive. For far too long, we’ve accepted workplaces where women are mistreated, harassed, assaulted. We’ve accepted the exclusion of people of color from our ranks and as our clients. We’ve accepted exploitation of workers and cyclical systems of abuse. We’ve accepted as the ideal of our profession an image of the architect—and the client—that is white, that is cis male, that is straight, that is able bodied, that is rich. We have to, urgently, denormalize these norms of the architectural profession and discipline.

We need that. As we make choices about our modern cities, as policymakers, advocates or citizens, we need these books to ground our vision, to help us imagine what is possible. And that’s why the tenuous future of university presses is so alarming.

More on Archinect:

Pump Out the Volumes: 50,000 free books form 1 art installation

Bradley Garrett on the importance of gonzo journalism for understanding cities

Wilkinson Eyre-renovated Weston Library at Oxford now reopened

Archinect's Screen/Print series

Beth Rosenthal penned an Op-Ed - Millennials and Opportunity: Embracing Intentional vs Spontaneous Change in the Workforce. In the piece she puts a challenge/question to her contemporaries; "What if rather than changing jobs or companies, you tried to change the system or culture within your existing work environment?...as our generation of millennials 'grows up' a little bit, and decides to potentially (just maybe?!) settle down a bit, how do we identify opportunities to yield change through a thoughtful investment of time and commitment?".

Steven Ward agreed with the gist but added "i think there is value in change at the beginning of your career…later on, stability is good…but don't just stick to stick. find a situation that you value, that makes you want to become rooted and engaged in a more committed way".
