The best interior design projects announced in the World Festival of Interiors: INSIDE 2022 shortlist

After the World Architecture Festival just announced its 2022 shortlist featuring the best new projects, the program's sister event, the World Festival of Interiors (INSIDE 2022), has now revealed the finalists of the interior design competition.

Highlighting outstanding interiors ranging from hotels, workplaces, public buildings, and restaurants, this year's shortlist includes 65 projects from across the globe. According to INSIDE program director Paul Finch, this year's selection "focused on the flow of users in the interior space, with use of lobbies, landings, and stairs for social and learning engagement."

Atelier tao+c's Capsule Hostel and Bookstore is the 2021 World Interior of the Year

In culmination of the two organization's shared annual awards program, the World Architecture Festival and INSIDE Festival of Interiors have just named the Capsule Hostel and Bookstore in Qinglongwu, China as the 2021 winner of the World Interior of the Year prize.

The design features a 20-person hostel and community bookstore space inserted into a 232-square-meter (2,500-square-foot) stone house set amongst the richly forested landscape of Zhejiang Province.

Atelier tao+c's intention was to explore the idea of a “building within a building” by transforming the former mountainside residence into a combination of different competing uses with the particular challenge of ensuring privacy for the hostel guests while enacting a workable network of wayfinding for customers of the bookstore.

The World Festival of Interiors (Inside 2021) is the sister festival to the renowned World Architecture Festival. As media partners of the WAF 2021 Awards, Archinect showcased a selection of shortlisted projects for this year's World Architecture Festival awards program. According to the World Festival of Interiors, "this year's shortlist consists of over 100 of the very best designed interior projects by some of the world's foremost design and architecture firms across more than 20 countries."

Covering 11 categories ranging from hotels, workplaces, homes, and restaurants, all shortlisted projects and design teams will "go on to compete in the live-judging in front of a panel of industry experts and an audience of their peers at the festival in Lisbon," explains the Festival.

2019 World Interior of the Year awarded to J.C. Architecture's regenerated JCA Living Lab in Taipei

Described as a “laboratory for future living”, the JCA Living Lab by J.C. Architecture is a regenerated Japanese Colonial residential house in Taipei that preserves its past while accommodating the modern-living needs of its occupants. Today, the project was announced as the 2019 World Interior of the Year at the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors in Amsterdam, following a final showdown between the nine category winners that were revealed yesterday. The JCA Living Lab won the Residential category.

Local craftspeople were brought in when needed and recycled elements were also incorporated into the design. The house combines traditional craftsmanship with modern detailing, like the hanging circular light in the living room, against a backdrop of preserved materials. A roof skylight shapes a path that acts as a guide for the entire house.

2018 World Interior of the Year awarded to JAC STUDIOS' Yumin Art Nouveau Collection

The Yumin Art Nouveau Collection by Danish practice JAC STUDIO was crowned the 2018 World Interior of the Year, marking the end of another INSIDE World Festival of Interiors. The last two days saw this year's nominated designers face off in a live competition at RAI Amsterdam in hopes to be named one of the 10 category winners.

After one final round of presentations by the category winners, the jury awarded the coveted grand prize to the Yumin Art Nouveau Collection for “its crafted sensitivity, to both the building and the Gallé glass to which the museum [is] dedicated”.

Black Cant System, a chic monochromatic fashion concept store by Hangzhou AN Interior Design was revealed as the 2016 World Interior of the Year on the last day of the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors...Located in the suburban outskirts of Shanghai, the Heike concept store is quietly tucked away on the second floor of a furniture store.

Out of over 100 competitive submissions, the retail store joins other stunning World Interior of the Year winners like March Studio's Hotel Hotel, the MOTT32 restaurant in Hong Kong by Joyce Wang Studio, and David Kohn Architects' Carrer Avinyó.

HALLUCINATE creates a “surreal ambience“ in this sleek trading center

Large industrial enterprises aren't typically known for conducting business inside jaw-dropping office environments. Shenzhen-based HALLUCINATE Design Office certainly defies that assumption in their Midwest Inland Port Financial Town project in China's Xi’an International Trade & Logistics Park.

Completed last December, Hallucinate won the commission to design the commodity trading center from Maike Metals Group, one of China's largest suppliers of non-ferrous metals and minerals.

Designed with an “unconventional open and tranquil style”, Hallucinate beautifully contrasts bold details and textures with a subtle yet sleek color palette that doesn't appear sterile. The 326,200m² office shows off a glass wall curtain and aluminum panels on its exterior, while its interior boasts a careful arrangement of materials like artificial stone, aluminum, hardwood flooring, and mineral wood. A mixture of natural light and soft LED lighting throughout the space creates a “surreal ambience”.

Floating fragmented pieces of reclaimed timber energize the lobby space of the charmingly named Hotel Hotel, located in the blossoming precinct of NewActon in Canberra, Australia. Designed by Australian practice March Studio, the hotel was recently named World Interior of the Year at the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors in Singapore's Marina Bay Sands.

Coinciding with the World Architecture Festival, INSIDE highlights the most outstanding projects in the international interior design scene. The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is preparing for another eventful year at the Moshe Safdie-designed Marina Bay Sands in Singapore on November 4-6. Architects, designers, and clients from around the world gather to witness the happenings of the live architecture competition and form connections with some 2,000 of their fellow attendees. Needless to say, the competition attracts a number of stellar projects from today's leading designers, so it's anyone's game.

For 2015, the WAF shortlist boasts 338 projects across 31 categories from architects based in 46 countries.

Joyce Wang Studio’s MOTT32 in Hong Kong wins World Interior of the Year 2014

Joyce Wang Studio's MOTT32, an underground bank vault-turned-restaurant in Hong Kong, scooped up the World Interior of the Year 2014 award today at the Marina Bay Sands. The "super jury" of the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors competition nominated 60 interior design projects worldwide, which were then narrowed down to nine category winners. When deciding upon the World Interior of the Year out of the category winners, the jury unanimously decided on MOTT32.

The 10-person team of Joyce Wang Studio explored Hong Kong culture's past and present in transforming the former storage facility, which housed expensive family heirlooms for wealthy Chinese immigrants, into the MOTT32 restaurant. The dining space has remnants of forgotten heirlooms, Chinese propaganda, and industrial accents that double as furniture and light fittings.

David Kohn Architects won the World Interior of the Year 2013 title at the INSIDE: World Festival of Interiors awards ceremony in the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Singapore on Oct. 4. The INSIDE festival occured within the same week of its parent event, the World Architecture Festival 2013.
