HENN’s massive new Zoomlion headquarters breaks ground in China

The latest in a lineage of corporate headquarters designs that dates to 1965 is officially underway in China’s Hunan Province, the product of a multi-year collaboration between HENN and the heavy manufacturing giant Zoomlion.

The Z-shaped design includes a museum, data center, and even sports facilities for workers of new the 311,000-square-meter (3.34-million-square-foot) industrial park. Project leader Hua Qiao described its form as an “immense, cut stone floating above its natural surroundings.”

Once realized in 2023, the Zoomlion headquarters will eventually join HENN's Zalando BHQ-Z project that recently topped out in Berlin in its growing portfolio of major corporate designs.

The Cube by Henn will be the world's first building made of carbon fiber-reinforced concrete

German architecture firm Henn, along with researchers at the Technical University of Dresden, has been working to create the first building in the world made of concrete reinforced by carbon fibers instead of steel.

Labeled as the world’s first building made of carbon concrete, the Cube is currently under construction on the Technical University of Dresden campus. Henn is working with the university’s Institute for Solid Construction, led by professor Manfred Curbach. The experimental 220-square-meter building is a showcase project from the “C³ - Carbon Concrete Composite” research initiative on innovative building materials funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Through this project, carbon concrete is being researched and developed as a new combination of carbon and high-performance concrete.

HENN and C.F. Møller Architects win first prize for the new Grosshadern Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) Clinic Campus, triumphing over 17 other planning teams who competed for the commission. The architects plan to transform the existing structures to create a green, connected, and friendly environment for medical care, research, and education.

HENN's winning design gives the largest cultural center in Europe a makeover

The Gasteig, the largest cultural center in Europe, will undergo an intensive renovation and remodeling. After 30 years of use, the Gasteig will be redesigned by the team at HENN. Opening in 1984/85, the centre welcomes an estimated two million visitors annually. Originally designed by the architecture partnership of Raue, Rollenhagen, Grossmann and Lindemann, its red brick design may not have been a visual showstopper. However, the building's role as Munich's cultural hub is what it's revered for.

Having been chosen to renovate a structural icon within the community, HENN focused on redesigning the center by introducing a new architectural element to the building. Highlighting the role of the center's interior, HENN's design proposal features a glazed bridge that focuses on uniting existing areas of the building. The transparency of the bridge creates a new visual perspective enabling the the Gasteig to open up to the city and create a welcoming feel.
